Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Eagles acquired running back Kenjon Barner from the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2015.
Barner played four seasons at Oregon under current Eagles coach Chip Kelly, rushing for 3,623 yards and 41 touchdowns in the high-powered Ducks offense.
He appeared in eight games for Carolina as a rookie last season after being drafted in the sixth round, rushing six times for seven yards and catching two passes for seven yards. He returned two kicks for 17 yards.
Kelly said he hopes Barner will give the Eagles depth at the running back and return positions.
"He's obviously a guy I know really well from Oregon, where he had a very productive career," Kelly said. "He has a lot of speed, explosiveness and had a knack for making some really big plays.
"But our plan with him right now is get him in Philadelphia as soon as we can and plug him in at running back and returner and let him compete."
Eagles running back LeSean McCoy led the NFL with 2,146 yards from scrimmage last season. Darren Sproles and Chris Polk are behind him on the depth chart.
