New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Detroit Lions linebacker Travis Lewis was suspended Tuesday for the final four games of the regular season for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances.
Lewis, who has played mostly on special teams this season, would be eligible to return to the team if the Lions make the playoffs.
"I apologize to my coaches, teammates, the Lions organization and our fans for my actions. I have let my team down and there's nothing worse than that," Lewis said in a statement.
"I will not make the same mistake again. I look forward to returning to the team after I serve my suspension."
Lewis has played 25 games for Detroit since being drafted in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
The 25-year-old Lewis tested positive after using the drug Adderall, a person who reviewed the test told the Detroit Free Press.
"All NFL players know they are responsible for their actions, and they also know there are consequences when their actions are not consistent with League policy," Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said in a statement.
"While we are disappointed that Travis violated League policy and will miss the next four games, we expect that Travis will learn from this experience and not repeat it."
Lewis will be placed on the reserve/suspended list and the Lions signed linebacker Julian Stanford to take his place on the roster.
Stanford recorded 23 tackles in 16 games (six starts) with Jacksonville Jaguars last season. He was released by Jacksonville during final cuts in training camp.
The 7-5 Lions will face the Eagles, also 7-5, on Sunday.
