Renton, WA (Sports Network) - The Seattle Seahawks have traded quarterback Matt Flynn to the Oakland Raiders.
Oakland will send a fifth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and a conditional draft pick in 2015 to the Seahawks for Flynn, who signed with Seattle as a free agent in March 2012.
Flynn was expected to become the starting quarterback for the Seahawks after a four-year run as a backup in Green Bay, but rookie Russell Wilson beat him out for the position.
As Wilson's backup, the 27-year-old LSU product appeared in three games for the Seahawks last season and completed 5-of-9 passes for 68 yards.
Flynn has made just two starts in his NFL career, but his last one in Green Bay made him one of the most coveted free agents on the market last spring. He passed for 480 yards and six touchdowns in a 45-41 win over Detroit in Week 17 of the 2011 campaign.
The Seahawks then signed him to a three-year deal worth a reported $26 million with $10 million guaranteed.
In 37 games over five seasons, Flynn has completed 87-of-141 passes for 1,083 yards with nine touchdowns and five interceptions.
"I've known Matt Flynn since 2007 and scouted him before and after he entered the NFL," said Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie in a statement Monday. "Matt is a tough football player, and a talented quarterback. He will get the opportunity to compete to be a starter with the Raiders. I believe Matt has that potential, but I also know he hasn't had enough experience. We're going to let him compete and battle, and see what happens. We know Raider Nation wants a team that can compete for the playoffs year-in and year-out and we're putting in the necessary work right now to make that happen. This is one of the many decisions in that process."
Oakland, in turn, could deal quarterback Carson Palmer. The Oakland Tribune last week said the Raiders were working on a trade that would send Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals.
Palmer has spent the past two seasons in Oakland after the Raiders acquired him from Cincinnati for a pair of high picks, including a 2012 first-round choice, in October 2011.
In 15 games last season, Palmer completed 61.1 percent of his passes for 4,018 yards with 22 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
The 33-year-old Southern California product has connected on 62.5 percent of his throws for 29,465 yards with 189 touchdowns and 130 interceptions since becoming a full-time starter in Cincinnati for the 2004 season.
