Utah Jazz (1-12) at Dallas Mavericks (8-4), 8:30 p.m.
(SportsNetwork.com) - The Dallas Mavericks have won three straight and will
try to extend the streak when they welcome the woeful Utah Jazz to American
The Mavs complete a three-game homestand on Friday and the Jazz game comes on
the heels of a 123-120 victory over fellow Southwest Division rivals, the
Dirk Nowitzki needed 17 points to pass Reggie Miller for 15th place on the
NBA's all-time scoring list. He netted 35 points as the Mavericks overcame an
18-point deficit for the victory.
"You know, obviously I didn't think when I first got here that 15, 16 years
later I'd be in the top 15 of scoring all time, so it's great," said Nowitzki.
"It was a great night, but I'm really more happy about the win to be honest.
It means more to me right now than any other records."
Nowitzki passed Jerry West last Tuesday to get to 16th.
Monta Ellis actually led the Mavs in scoring against Houston with 37 points on
13-for-18 shooting. Dallas shot an astounding 58.3 percent from the floor and
50 percent from long range.
Shawn Marion and Jose Calderon both chipped in 13 points and Samuel Dalembert
had 10 rebounds and four blocks.
The Mavs visit the Denver Nuggets on Saturday and then complete the home-and-
home series in Dallas on Monday.
Utah has lost four straight since getting its first victory of the season. The
most recent setback came in New Orleans on Wednesday night, 105-98 in the
first of a three-game road trip.
It has been a struggle for the young Jazz team, which went with a youth
movement in the offseason.
"You have to grow up," said Jazz head coach Tyrone Corbin. "This is who we
have and this is who we are going to be. We can't manufacture anyone else to
put on the floor."
Enes Kanter led the way for the Jazz with 19 points and nine rebounds against
the Pelicans. John Lucas III had 14 points, while Richard Jefferson and
Derrick Favors managed 13 points apiece. Favors also grabbed 11 rebounds.
It was a horrendous night for Gordon Hayward, Utah's leading scorer at 18.5
ppg. He went a staggering 1-for-17 from the floor for only six points, but he
did hand out 11 assists.
The Jazz took two of three from the Mavericks last season, however Dallas has
taken five straight and 10 of its last 11 at home against Utah.
