Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Damian Lillard led six Trail Blazers in
double figures and filled the stat sheet with 22 points, eight rebounds and
seven assists as Portland bested the Sacramento Kings, 104-91, on Friday at
LaMarcus Aldridge and Wesley Matthews deposited 20 and 18 points,
respectively, and Nicolas Batum tallied 14 points, seven boards and eight
assists. Portland has won three of its last four on the heels of an opening
night loss in Phoenix.
"Damian and L.A., they're kind of our go-to guys and they came through
tonight," said Portland coach Terry Stotts.
DeMarcus Cousins shot 13-of-25 from the field en route to a season-high 35
points. He also grabbed nine boards and had four steals in the losing effort.
Isaiah Thomas continued his terrific play off the bench with 13 points and
seven assists. The 60th overall pick in the 2011 draft has reached double
figures in all five games so far this season. Greivis Vasquez had 12 points
and six helpers.
"We've got guys that aren't making shots," said Kings coach Mike Malone. "We
didn't defend anybody. 49 percent from the field, they killed us from the 3-
point line. It's a broken record."
Lillard shot 3-for-3 from behind the arc in the opening quarter to propel the
home team to a nine-point lead. Cousins had 10 on the other side, but Portland
scored nine of the final 11 points to break a 20-20 tie.
"We played good defense, we got out in transition and we put them in scramble
mode," said Lillard. "We just moved the ball and guys knocked down shots."
The lead grew to 11 at multiple points during the second quarter. Marcus
Thornton and Patrick Patterson hit consecutive 3-pointers and Cousins dunked
in transition to pull the Kings within three 5:32 before halftime. Matthews' 3
put Portland back up 10 with two minutes left, but the Kings cut it to 54-49
at the half.
An Aldridge putback midway through the third capped a 12-0 Portland surge to
pull ahead by 13. The lead stayed in double figures until Cousins' layup with
4:53 left in the contest.
Aldridge then hit three jumpers to ice the game.
Sacramento has dropped 10 of its last 14 trips to Portland ... The Blazers
out-rebounded the Kings, 47-31 ... Patterson and Travis Outlaw had 10 points
apiece for the Kings ... Thomas Robinson had 10 for Portland ... The two teams
meet again in Sacramento on Saturday.
