Washington Nationals (20-19) at Arizona Diamondbacks (16-26), 3:40 p.m.
Probable Starting Pitchers: Washington - Doug Fister (0-1, 10.38) Arizona - Brandon McCarthy (1-6, 5.66)
(SportsNetwork.com) - The Arizona Diamondbacks can lock down their first home series victory of the season on Wednesday afternoon, when they host the Washington Nationals in the finale of a three-game set at Chase Field.
Arizona dropped Monday's opener, but rallied with a 3-1 win in the middle game that upped their sub-par record on home turf to just 4-16.
Bronson Arroyo allowed just a run on seven hits while issuing one walk and striking out seven for Arizona. Of his 110 pitches, 79 went for strikes, and he ended with his first complete game of the year and the 16th of his career.
Arroyo also had a pair of hits and scored a run as he outpitched Washington ace Stephen Strasburg (3-3), who yielded all three runs on eight hits over seven frames.
The win was the Diamondbacks' eighth in 12 games, after they'd won just eight of 30 to begin the season.
"You just want to get it done at home to show there's not some sort of jinx going on," Arroyo said.
Trying to prevent the Arizona series win will be Washington starter Doug Fister, who was acquired from Detroit in the offseason and began 2014 on the disabled list before debuting on Friday with an 8-0 loss to Oakland.
Fister allowed seven runs on nine hits in just 4 1/3 innings.
"Physically, I felt like I was in the right place. I felt strong. It was lack of execution," he said. "It's a matter of going out and executing, whether you are sore or feeling good. You have to make the adjustments, and I didn't do that."
Starting for Arizona is right-hander Brandon McCarthy, who fell to 1-6 for 2014 with a 9-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Friday, in which he allowed seven runs and didn't get through the fourth inning.
"Everything felt the exact same as the first three innings," he said. "Just all of a sudden, every pitch I threw, I was turning and watching it go somewhere else. I'm baffled at this point."
In three previous starts, he'd allowed just three earned runs in 19 innings.
In his lone career start against Washington, he allowed two runs in seven innings of a 2-0 loss last September.
