Final Score: Tampa Bay 3, Toronto 0
St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - David Price tossed eight-plus scoreless innings and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-0, in the rubber match of a three-game series.
Price (9-7), an AL All-Star for the fourth time in his career, exited after giving up a leadoff single to Melky Cabrera in the ninth. Jake McGee, who was activated from the paternity list before Sunday's game, retired all three batters he faced to secure the victory.
The 28-year-old Price gave up five hits and stuck out five to improve to 15-2 lifetime against Toronto. The left-hander, who was scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday due to illness, has won four consecutive starts.
Evan Longoria, Jose Molina and Logan Forsythe each drove in a run for the Rays, who head into the All-Star break with a 44-53 record.
R.A. Dickey (7-9) allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks in a six-inning start for the Blue Jays (49-47).
The Blue Jays actually had a chance to score in the first inning. Cabrera worked a one-out walk and moved to third on Jose Bautista's single. But Dan Johnson popped out and Erik Kratz flied out to end the threat.
The Rays gave Price all the support he would need in the second. With two outs, Yunel Escobar singled and Molina was hit by a pitch. Forsythe followed with an RBI single to right-center field.
Tampa Bay tacked on a run in the sixth and seventh. With one out in the sixth, Escobar reached on a fielder's choice. He stole second and raced home on Molina's single to right-center field. Escobar was originally called out at the plate, but the Rays challenged the call on the field. Escobar was ruled safe following the review.
In the seventh, Brett Cecil took over on the mound for the Blue Jays. Kevin Kiermaier singled and Ben Zobrist walked. After pinch-hitter Sean Rodriguez struck out swinging, Todd Redmond came in from the bullpen. Zobrist stole second and Kiermaier stole third to set up Longoria's sacrifice fly.
Meanwhile, Price continued to post zeros on the scoreboard.
Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes extended his hitting streak to nine games ... To make room on the roster for McGee, the Rays optioned pitcher Jeremy Hellickson to Double-A Montgomery ... Because Price pitched on Sunday, he is ineligible to play in the All-Star game Tuesday night in Minnesota. His roster spot was taken by Seattle closer Fernando Rodney ... Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings (bruised left knee) missed his second straight game ... Toronto has not won a road series against Tampa Bay since April 2007, a span of 22 sets.
