Final Score: Kansas City 8, LA Angels of Anaheim 6
Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Omar Infante capped Kansas City's seven- run third inning with his first career grand slam, and the Royals snapped the Angels' six-game winning streak with an 8-6 victory on Friday.
Lorenzo Cain went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored while Salvador Perez also recorded three hits for the Royals, who had dropped six of seven coming into the opener of this three-game series.
Kansas City's bullpen kept the Angels hitless over the final five innings, with Michael Mariot (1-0) picking up his first career win in relief of Jason Vargas, who was pulled after surrendering six runs on nine hits over four-plus frames.
C.J. Cron homered twice and drove in three runs, while Mike Trout added a solo homer for the Angels.
Matt Shoemaker (5-2) suffered his first loss of the season as a starter after yielding eight runs on 11 hits over just four innings of work.
The Angels staked the rookie to a 2-0 lead with solo homers from Trout in the first and Cron in the second.
Trout's mammoth blast landed in the waterfalls in center field, but the Royals showed small ball can be just as explosive with a seven-spot in the third.
Alcides Escobar opened the frame with a double, then Jarrod Dyson and Cain followed with run-scoring base hits. After Eric Hosmer singled and Billy Butler walked to load the bases, Cain scored on an Alex Gordon sacrifice fly, and Perez singled to fill the sacks again in front of Infante, who narrowly cleared the wall in left field for the first grand slam of his 13-year career.
Cain tripled and scored on Butler's RBI single in the fourth, but the Angels struck for four runs in the fifth to inch closer.
Two came via Cron's second home run of the game, while a Chris Iannetta RBI single and Albert Pujols sac fly cut the Angels' deficit to 8-6.
The only other time the visitors threatened, though, came in the sixth when they had runners on the corners with one out, and Kelvin Herrera retired Chris Iannetta and pinch-hitter Kole Calhoun to maintain the two-run cushion.
Greg Holland put the finishing touches on the Royals' terrific bullpen effort by striking out the side in the ninth to collect his 23rd save.
David Carpenter tossed three innings of scoreless relief for the Angels ... Escobar had two hits and two steals ... The Angels had won six of the previous seven meetings, including five in a row in Kansas City.
