Final Score: San Diego 4, Chicago White Sox 1
Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Yonder Alonso had a two-run homer and Ian Kennedy pitched six solid innings as the San Diego Padres defeated the Chicago White Sox, 4-1, in the opener of a three-game set.
Alonso went 3-for-4 and Cameron Maybin also homered, while Chris Denorfia and Carlos Quentin both contributed two hits for the Padres, who have won two of their last three games.
Kennedy (4-6) surrendered just one run on four hits and struck out nine in the first meeting between the two teams since 2005.
"I thought velocity on the fastball was good," Padres manager Bud Black said of Kennedy. "I thought he threw a good game, he set the tone."
Conor Gillaspie had two of Chicago's four hits. Starter John Danks (3-5) was tagged for two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and a walk across seven frames for the White Sox, who entered the contest with a three-game winning streak.
"Made some mistakes and got burned for them, but all in all it was a good day," Danks said.
Maybin stroked a shot to left to lead off the third and give the Padres a 1-0 lead.
The White Sox threatened in the home half. Alejandro De Aza walked and two batters later, moved over to third on Adam Eaton's single. Gordon Beckham struck out, however, and Eaton was caught trying to steal second to end the frame.
Chicago did tie the game in the fourth. Gillaspie singled and Adam Dunn walked, with Gillaspie advancing to third on Alexei Ramirez's fly out and racing home on Kennedy's wild pitch.
Rene Rivera doubled to lead off the fifth for the Padres. He moved up to third on Everth Cabrera's sacrifice bunt and gave San Diego the lead on Danks' wild pitch.
San Diego added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Tommy Medica drew a one-out walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Will Venable, who scored on Alonso's blast to right that made it a 4-1 game.
Kennedy has struck out six or more batters in six of his last seven outings ... Gillaspie extended his hitting streak to six games ... San Diego is making its first trip to U.S. Cellular Field since 2003 ... Quentin has hit in nine straight games ... Chicago went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.
