Final Score: Houston 3, Kansas City 0
Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Collin McHugh pitched seven scoreless innings as the Houston Astros grabbed a 3-0 win over the Kansas City Royals in the second of a three-game set.
McHugh (3-3) won for the first time in his past five starts as he allowed just five hits without a walk while striking out nine for the Astros, who have won four straight. Alex Presley went 3-for-3 with an RBI.
"That there is what you call an extremely well played major league baseball game," said Astros manager Bo Porter. "In all aspects of the game I felt like our guys understood every situation they were in tonight and did a tremendous job of executing."
Jeremy Guthrie (2-4) gave up a run on seven hits over six innings to absorb the loss for the Royals, who have dropped four of their last five.
"It's just a matter of the offense locking in," said Kansas City first baseman Eric Hosmer. "We just have to figure out a way."
The Astros got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning after back-to-back walks from Dexter Fowler and Jason Castro was followed by a single to center by Matt Dominguez for a 1-0 lead.
Houston gave itself some room in the eighth off Tim Collins. Castro started the inning with a double, moved to third on a Dominguez groundout and, after Jesus Guzman worked a walk, came home on a wild pitch. Presley later added a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 advantage.
Kansas City stranded runners on first and third in the second, then left men on second and third in the fifth after Omar Infante flied out to end the inning.
McHugh worked a flawless sixth and seventh, while Tony Sipp pitched a 1-2-3 eighth.
Sipp got Hosmer to groundout to start the ninth, and Chad Qualls retired the next two batters to finish the game.
