Final Score: Detroit 6, Boston 2
Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Victor Martinez hit a two-run home run and the Detroit Tigers polished off a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox with a 6-2 win on Sunday.
Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Ian Kinsler was 4-for-5 with two runs scored for the Tigers, who have now won 11 straight games on the road.
Anibal Sanchez (1-2) returned from a stint on the disabled list to pick up his first win of the season as he gave up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts over five innings.
Xander Bogaerts finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Red Sox, who have lost four straight and five of six. Jake Peavy (1-2) allowed five runs on 11 hits over six innings.
Boston jumped on top in the second inning as Grady Sizemore led off with a single, moved to second on A.J. Pierzynski's groundout, and came home on a Bogaerts single, but Detroit took the lead in the third.
Kinsler doubled with one out and, after Torii Hunter flied out, Cabrera fought off an inside pitch by dropping a bloop single into shallow left, scoring Kinsler. Martinez followed with a shot over the right-center wall for a 3-1 lead.
In the fifth, back-to-back singles from Kinsler and Hunter saw runners at the corners and Cabrera's sacrifice fly scored Kinsler for a 4-1 advantage.
Boston loaded the bases with one out in the fifth and got a run back as Mike Napoli hit a chopper to third base that Don Kelly fielded, but his throw home was low and Dustin Pedroia scored to make it a 4-2 game. Sizemore, though, lined out back to the mound and Sanchez caught Shane Victorino off third for the double play.
The Tigers got the run back in the sixth as Austin Jackson doubled with one out and Alex Avila brought him home with a single to right, and Hunter's home run over the Green Monster in the seventh made it a 6-2 game.
"They're very good," said Red Sox manager John Farrell about the Tigers. "There doesn't appear to be a weak link. Their bullpen pitched outstanding, their defense overall played very well and their starting rotation is strong. As well as the top half of that lineup is swinging the bat right now, they're a very good team."
