Final Score: New York 2, St. Louis 0
Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Jenrry Mejia fired 6 2/3 scoreless innings and the New York Mets blanked the St. Louis Cardinals, 2-0, in the opener of a four-game set.
Mejia (3-0) struck out seven and surrendered four hits and three walks for the Mets, who have won five of their last seven games.
"He gave us more than we expected, for sure," Mets manager Terry Collins said of Mejia.
Travis d'Arnaud tallied an RBI and two of New York's seven hits in the triumph. Newly-named closer Kyle Farnsworth, who replaced Jose Valverde, fired a scoreless ninth for his first save of the year.
Matt Carpenter, Allen Craig and Yadier Molina each had two hits to account for St. Louis' total. Tyler Lyons (0-1) fanned seven, but allowed two runs on six hits and four walks over six frames to notch the loss.
The Cardinals have dropped four of their last six games.
"Being frustrated, I don't think there's anything wrong with that," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. ""I think the bigger story is that our offense will get going on a consistent basis."
The Mets jumped out to a 2-0 lead after plating a run in the third and sixth innings.
New York used a two-out rally to get on the board in the third. Eric Young Jr. singled and Curtis Granderson was hit by a pitch before Young scored on David Wright's broken-bat single through the hole on the left side of the infield.
Daniel Murphy and Josh Satin worked walks against Lyons in the sixth while Chris Young, who reached on a throwing error to begin the frame, was thrown out trying to steal third. Murphy, though, was able to swipe third and later crossed the plate on d'Arnaud's base hit to center.
The Cardinals had runners on the corners with one away in the top of the sixth, but Matt Holliday popped out and Matt Adams grounded out to second to end the threat.
St. Louis' Shane Robinson rolled out to third with runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh, and Alex Torres struck out Holliday and Adams with a man in scoring position in the eighth.
Murphy has three steals this season ... The Mets were 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position, while St. Louis finished 0-for-5 with RISP and left seven men on base.
