Final Score: Los Angeles 3, Detroit 2 (10 innings)
Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Carl Crawford's double in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers in the first game of a two-game series.
Victor Martinez slapped a Kenley Jansen offering into center field with two outs in the ninth to tie the game at 2-2 and force extra innings.
J.P. Howell (1-0) pitched a perfect top half of the 10th for the Dodgers to earn the win.
"Nice one to win," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. "It was like a playoff game. Our bullpen has a lot of depth. When we are in a close game we feel we are going to win."
Joba Chamberlain (0-1), who struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to send it to extras, walked Chone Figgins to lead off the home half of the 10th for the Dodgers. Phil Coke replaced Chamberlain and forced Dee Gordon to pop his bunt attempt into the air that was caught by Martinez.
Crawford then followed with a slicing double to left that got past Rajai Davis and rolled to the wall, enabling Figgins to score from first.
Crawford finished 3-for-5, Dee Gordon homered and Justin Turner added an RBI for the Dodgers, who have won two straight. Los Angeles starter Dan Haren allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts and a walk over six innings of work.
Austin Jackson hit a solo home run for Detroit, which saw starter Max Scherzer pitch seven innings, allowing two runs with eight strikeouts and a walk.
"Both starting pitchers pitched a good game overall," said Tigers manager Brad Ausmus. "In the end, unfortunately, we were losers, but overall it was well pitched."
Gordon slammed the fourth pitch from Scherzer over the right-center field wall to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.
"I got lucky," Gordon said of the homer. "I took a good swing on a two-strike pitch. I was thinking of getting three when I hit. I didn't know it went out."
That lead was short-lived, however, as Jackson tied the game up in the top of the second with a bomb to left field.
Tim Federowicz sliced a pitch down the right-field foul line in the bottom of the second when Torii Hunter slid to make the catch and drilled the wall in foul territory. He was unable to come up with the ball and grabbed his left knee in pain. Hunter remained in the game before being replaced by Don Kelly in the fifth.
Turner broke the tie when he lifted a Scherzer pitch into center that scored Matt Kemp from third.
Jansen allowed a leadoff double to Ian Kinsler in the ninth, Detroit's first hit since the second inning, then induced a groundout of Kelly before striking out Miguel Cabrera.
The blown save was Jansen's first of the season ... Detroit was 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, while LA was 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position ... The Dodgers had 10 hits and held Detroit to just five ... Crawford had a stolen base and was also caught stealing.
