Final Score: San Diego 4, Miami 2
Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Alexi Amarista hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh inning to help the San Diego Padres overtake the Miami Marlins, 4-2, and avoid a sweep of the three-game series.
"Instead of me getting gifts from my teammates, I gave a gift to the team," said Amarista, who was celebrating his 25th birthday.
Yonder Alonso picked up an RBI despite not recording a hit in four plate appearances. Amarista had the only extra base hit for the Padres, who snapped a four-game skid.
Ian Kennedy (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, yielding one run on three hits through six innings of work while recording five strikeouts. Huston Street earned his second save of the season after retiring the Marlins in order in the ninth.
The Marlins' Giancarlo Stanton had a run-scoring single, giving him an RBI in each of the first seven games. Jeff Baker drove in the other run for Miami, which had won five straight against the Padres.
Nathan Eovaldi (1-1) threw six scoreless innings before surrendering Amarista's homer in the seventh. Eovaldi struck out eight and allowed six hits through seven frames without issuing a walk.
"Eovaldi pitched a great game and deserved better than that, but sometimes that's the way it goes," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of Eovaldi.
With Miami leading 1-0 in the seventh, the Padres took control on Amarista's three-run blast. Will Venable singled deep to second base before a ball hit by Tommy Medica found the hole on the left side. A pinch-hitting Amarista then smacked the two-out homer.
Miami got one back with two-outs in the bottom of the seventh on a pinch-hit RBI double by Baker to pull within 3-2.
San Diego answered in the eighth to push lead back to two runs. Chris Denorfia led off with a pinch-hit single and stole second. He made his way to third on Jarrod Saltalamacchia's off-target throw and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alonso.
Earlier, the Marlins grabbed a lead in the fourth on Stanton's RBI single.
