Final Score: Atlanta 5, Miami 0
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - The Atlanta Braves slugged their way to an early lead and Brandon Beachy took it from there as the club cruised to its 14th straight win with a 5-0 drubbing of the Miami Marlins.
Chris Johnson belted a three-run homer while Justin Upton and Brian McCann each added solo shots for Atlanta, which is riding its longest winning streak since 2000 and saw Beachy round back into form with eight scoreless innings in the opener of this three-game series.
Beachy (1-0) was making his third start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last June and looked every bit the pitcher that threw to a 2.00 ERA in his injury-shortened 2012 campaign, giving up just three hits and one walk.
"I commanded my fastball and changeup pretty well," Beachy said. "I still have a lot of room for improvement with the curveball, and especially the slider. Fortunately, I was able to command the other two well enough to where I can get by and continue to work on the others and piece it all together."
Jacob Turner (3-4) was charged for all five runs -- four earned -- on five hits over five frames in the Marlins' sixth straight loss.
The Braves raced out to a 4-0 lead with two home runs in the first inning.
Upton got things started when he took a high, inside fastball deep to left for his 22nd long ball of the year. The slugger already has six homers in August after collecting just four from Apr. 28 to July 31.
A single and an Adeiny Hechavarria error put two on for Johnson, who upped his NL-leading batting average by taking a 1-0 cutter over the center-field wall.
McCann got in on the barrage in the third, as he also cleared the wall in center by the narrowest of margins.
"They've obviously been playing good baseball," said Turner, who had allowed just three home runs in 12 starts coming into the game. "(I tried to) go out there and match them."
Beachy faced one over the minimum through the first five innings and did not allow a runner part first base until Juan Pierre reached him for a one-out, pinch-hit double in the sixth. Pierre never made it to third, as he was thrown out on Christian Yelich fielder's choice back to the mound.
Beachy caught Jeff Mathis looking at strike three to end the eighth for his sixth punchout, and having thrown 99 pitches -- 67 for strikes -- was pulled to start the ninth.
Scott Downs and Luis Ayala combined to finish off the shutout.
This is the Braves' longest winning streak since rattling off 15 in a row from April 16-May 2, 2000 ... Atlanta has won eight straight at Turner Field ... Upton has hit safely in 13 straight games ... Braves outfielder Jason Heyward went 2-for-4 on his 24th birthday ... Beachy came in 2-0 with a 2.94 ERA in five career starts against the Marlins ... Turner fell to 0-7 in 11 career road starts ... The Braves lead the season series, 7-3 ... Game time: 2:26.
