Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Omar Infante drove in three runs and the
Kansas City Royals surged to their ninth straight win with an 11-4 victory
over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.
Alex Gordon and Mike Moustakas each hit a two-run home run for the Royals, who
jumped a half-game ahead of Detroit for first place in the AL Central.
"It's been a long time since we've been in this spot," said Gordon about being
in first place. "It's the latest in the year we've been in first since I've
been here. But there's still a lot of baseball left to play."
Yordano Ventura (5-5) gave up three runs on eight hits with a pair of walks
and four strikeouts over seven innings in the win.
Ian Kinsler hit a solo home run while Miguel Cabrera and Austin Jackson each
had an RBI for Detroit, which has dropped the first two of this four-game set.
Max Scherzer (8-3) had a two-start winning streak stopped as he was beat up
for 10 runs on 10 hits and a walk in four-plus innings of work.
"You have to bring it every single night," said Scherzer. "That's what makes
the major leagues so much fun, is because of how good everybody is."
Kansas City grabbed the lead in the second inning as the team plated seven
runs in the frame.
Gordon hit a homer after Billy Butler singled, and Moustakas did the same
after Salvador Perez walked. Later in the frame, Infante hit a two-run single
and Eric Hosmer followed with a run-scoring groundout.
The Tigers answered in the home half with a pair of runs as an Alcides Escobar
bobble of a Nick Castellanos grounder scored Victor Martinez, and Jackson
followed with an RBI single to make it a 7-2 game.
Kansas City got into double digits in the fifth as Perez and Jarrod Dyson hit
RBI singles, and a bases-loaded walk to Infante pushed across another for a
Cabrera worked a bases-loaded walk of his own in the home fifth, while Lorenzo
Cain singled home a run for Kansas City in the seventh.
Kinsler's home run to lead off the eighth inning accounted for the final
Kansas City outfielder Nori Aoki left the game in the second inning with groin
discomfort ... Scherzer is 9-5 in 19 career starts against the Royals over his
career ... The Royals went 7-for-14 with runners in scoring position and are
27-for-60 in those situations in the first five games of this seven-game road
trip ... Detroit had won the previous five games this season against Kansas
City coming into this series.
