Final Score: Washington 4, Philadelphia 2
Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam LaRoche hit a two-run homer, Doug
Fister tossed seven solid innings and the Washington Nationals beat the
Philadelphia Phillies, 4-2, to complete a three-game sweep.
Jayson Werth and Ryan Zimmerman each knocked in a run for the Nationals, who
went 5-3 during an eight-game homestand. Fister (4-1) allowed two runs on four
hits while striking out five.
"The main focus is staying down in the zone and moving it in and out," said
Fister. "They got some nice swings on the ball, but the guys made some nice
plays and we play as a team here."
John Mayberry Jr. hit a solo homer for the Phillies, who have lost six in a
row for the first time since dropping eight straight from July 20-28, 2013.
Chase Utley also had an RBI.
Philadelphia starter Kyle Kendrick (1-6) gave up four runs on six hits with
five walks over seven innings.
"We lost, so it wasn't good enough," said Kendrick. "I walked five guys so
that wasn't good. My command just wasn't there tonight."
Each team scored a run in the first inning. Ben Revere led off the game with a
double down the left-field line, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and raced
home on Utley's single to right-center field.
In the bottom half of the frame, Anthony Rendon singled and LaRoche walked to
put men on first and second with two outs. Zimmerman followed with an RBI
single to left.
Washington plated three more runs in the fifth. Denard Span led off with a
double, moved to third when Rendon flied out to deep center field and scored
on Werth's single to right-center field. LaRoche followed with a blast to
right, making it 4-1.
Mayberry's homer in the seventh cut the gap to two, but Tyler Clippard tossed
a perfect eighth for Washington and Rafael Soriano pitched a scoreless ninth
to record his 12th save of the season.
Kendrick fell to 5-9 lifetime against Washington ... Phillies shortstop Jimmy
Rollins went 1-for-3 and is eight hits shy of passing Mike Schmidt (2,234) for
the most in team history.
