Final Score: Miami 1, Tampa Bay 0
Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Henderson Alvarez notched his third shutout of
the season as the Miami Marlins defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 1-0 on Tuesday.
Alvarez (3-3), who left his last start against the Nationals with elbow
tightness, allowed eights hits with no walks and five strikeouts. He has not
surrendered a run in 21 straight innings.
The right-hander is also the first pitcher to ever have three consecutive
shutouts in interleague play.
Garrett Jones scored the game's lone run and Marcell Ozuna doubled as the
Marlins won their second straight game.
"Sometimes you have to win games, 1-0," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond. "We
needed one of these."
James Loney and Yunel Escobar both supplied two hits and Kevin Kiermaier
tripled for Tampa Bay, which lost its eighth straight game and 10th in a row
on the road.
Chris Archer (3-3) gave up one run on five hits with eight strikeouts over
seven innings to take the loss.
The Rays have scored just six runs in their last six games and went 0-8 for
their worst road trip in franchise history.
"It's frustrating," said Archer. "We're doing everything we can and the ball
is not bouncing our way."
After issuing a leadoff walk to Christian Yelich, Archer set down nine
straight batters before allowing a single to Ed Lucas to start the fourth.
In the fifth, Archer loaded the bases with two outs off singles from Jones,
Adeiny Hechavarria and Alvarez. Archer walked Yelich to force in a run but
got Lucas to ground out to second, leaving the bases loaded.
Tampa Bay squandered their few opportunities in the second and third. Evan
Longoria and Loney both singled to lead off the second, but Matt Joyce struck
out and Escobar grounded into a double play.
Kiermaier hustled to third for a two-out triple in the third before Alvarez
got Ben Zobrist to ground out to short to end the threat.
