Final Score: Arizona 4, Los Angeles 2 (12 innings)
Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Aaron Hill's go-ahead two-run single in
the top of the 12th inning lifted the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 4-2 win over
the Los Angeles Dodgers in the opener of a three-game set.
A.J. Pollock lined a leadoff double off Chris Perez (0-1) before pinch-hitter
Cliff Pennington was hit by a pitch. Gerardo Parra moved both runners over
with a sacrifice bunt before they both scored on Hill's base hit to center.
"Gibby (Kirk Gibson) told me around the seventh or eighth inning that I was
going to win the game for us, I didn't believe him, but he (Perez) left
something up. It was a great win," Hill said.
Trevor Cahill fired a 1-2-3 12th to notch his first career save, while Joe
Thatcher (1-0) tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings to get the win.
Miguel Montero smacked a solo shot for the D-backs, who snapped a six-game
Zack Greinke, who has 16 consecutive starts with five-plus innings pitched and
two-or-fewer runs allowed -- the longest such streak since 1914 --,
surrendered a run on three hits and two walks while fanning eight over six
innings in a no-decision.
Juan Uribe sent the game into extras with a game-tying solo homer in the ninth
for LA, which has dropped three of its last four.
"We had plenty of chances to win. Zack threw the ball well, Juan kept us in
it, we just didn't do enough to win the game," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly
The game was scoreless through five innings before Montero launched a two-out
solo shot into the seats in right-center in the sixth, but the Dodgers got the
run back in the seventh when Scott Van Slyke belted a leadoff homer that just
crept over the wall in right-center.
Both teams traded runs in the ninth.
Montero worked a leadoff walk against Chris Withrow and pinch-runner Tony
Campana stole second to get into scoring position. A Cody Ross groundout
advanced him to third and he scored when Withrow uncorked a wild pitch on an
intentional ball while trying to walk Martin Prado.
LA, though, got the run back when Uribe lined a one-out solo blast off the
fencing of the left-field foul pole.
Tuffy Gosewisch grounded into an inning-ending double play in the top of the
10th with runners on first and second, while Dee Gordon grounded into a force
out with runners on first and second for the Dodgers in the home half.
Arizona starter Wade Miley fanned eight and allowed a run on two hits and five
walks over six innings in a no-decision ... The Dodgers were 0-for-5 with
runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.
