Final Score: New York 2, Milwaukee 1
Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Jeremy Hefner tossed seven effective innings
and Josh Satin went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI to lead the New York
Mets over the Milwaukee Brewers, 2-1, in the finale of a three-game series at
Hefner (4-6) struck out eight and allowed only two hits -- one a home run to
Jonathan Lucroy -- to win his third straight decision.
"He had command of his stuff," Mets manager Terry Collins said of his starter.
"He made one bad pitch pretty much the whole game."
Bobby Parnell recorded a four-out save for the Mets, who took the rubber match
and improved to 4-1-2 in their last seven series
Tom Gorzelanny (1-2) was a hard-luck loser in a spot start for the Brewers,
surrendering just two unearned runs and eight hits over six innings.
Juan Francisco, starting at third base in place of the injured Aramis Ramirez,
had a pair of throwing errors that led to both New York runs, and Milwaukee
was unable to recover in losing for the third time in four games.
With a runner on second and two outs in the fourth, Andrew Brown hit a slow
chopper down the line that Francisco barehanded and threw wildly to first. The
throw was high and got away from Sean Halton and allowed Satin to cross the
plate and break the scoreless tie.
In the sixth, another errant throw from Francisco advanced Marlon Byrd to
second, and Satin followed with an double off the bottom of the right-field
wall to put the Mets on top by a 2-0 margin.
"Slow rollers are always tough plays," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of
the errors. "If he makes good throws, both are outs."
The only hit allowed by Hefner in the first six innings was an infield single
to Halton in the second frame. Hefner went up 0-2 in the count on Lucroy
leading off the seventh before Lucroy hammered a fastball over the wall in
left center to get the Brewers on the board.
Hefner retired the next three and gave way to the bullpen after throwing 105
pitches, 71 for strikes.
Josh Edgin recorded the first two outs in the eighth, and Parnell got All-Star
Jean Segura on a routine groundout to second to strand a runner in scoring
Parnell worked around a two-out walk in the ninth to pick up his 15th save of
The Mets picked up 11 hits to Milwaukee's three ... Hefner has not lost since
June 11 against the Cardinals. He has allowed one earned run in six of his
last seven starts, lowering his ERA from 4.74 to 3.39 ... Satin is riding an
11-game hitting streak ... Gorzelanny also recorded eight strikeouts in
starting for the injured Wily Peralta, who had his outing pushed back because
of a left hamstring issue.
