St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - B.J. Upton totaled three hits with three
RBI and David Price tossed seven spectacular innings as Tampa Bay downed
Cleveland by a 6-0 count in the finale of a four-game set.
Luke Scott homered and Jeff Keppinger added two hits and an RBI for the Rays,
who managed a split in the series.
Price (13-4) allowed just two hits and three walks while fanning seven to take
the AL lead in victories. He surged ahead of Texas' Matt Harrison for the
"I felt good," said Price. "We got some runs early and that's always a
positive. We played good defense and we put a good game together."
Ubaldo Jimenez (8-9) was tagged in defeat for seven hits and five runs,
walking five and fanning five over 5 2/3 frames for the Indians, who have
dropped four of their last six.
"That's why I felt that [Wednesday's] win was so important for us," remarked
Cleveland manager Manny Acta. "You really don't want to come into the last
game of the series trying to tie the series against David Price. He
Tampa broke the game open in the sixth, chasing Jimenez in the process.
Despite retiring the first two batters, the Cleveland starter loaded the bases
by plunking Desmond Jennings, allowing a Jose Molina single and walking Sean
Rodriguez. Upton then cleared the sacks with a double to make it 4-0.
Scott Barnes came on but uncorked a wild pitch then saw Carlos Pena single
home Upton for a five-run spread.
Scott doubled to start the seventh and scored when Keppinger followed with a
Price's only crisis came in the fifth, as the Tribe put runners on the corners
with two down, but Aaron Cunningham flied out to end the threat.
Tampa's starter ended his outing by retiring the side in order, then Wade
Davis struck out three over his two hitless innings of relief.
The Rays picked up the game's first run in the third, as Scott's blast with
two down reached the seats in right.
Tampa blanked an opponent for the seventh time in 2012 and first since June 17
against the Marlins...Cleveland was shut out for the fourth time this year and
for the third time in July alone...The season series ended in a 4-4
deadlock...Price eclipsed his win total for 2011 and is six away from his
career best of 19 wins, set in 2010.
