San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ian Kennedy threw six strong innings as the San Diego Padres grabbed a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs to earn a split of a four-game set.
Kennedy (3-6) gave up a run on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts for the Padres, who had dropped five of six coming into the game. Chase Headley, Carlos Quentin and Jedd Gyorko each drove in a run.
Starlin Castro hit a two-run home run and Junior Lake added a solo shot for the Cubs, who had won five of seven. Jason Hammel (5-3) gave up three runs on three hits while walking two and striking out five in 5 2/3 innings.
The game stayed scoreless until the top of the sixth when Lake drove a pitch over the wall in left for his sixth home run of the year to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. In the home half, though, San Diego took over.
The Padres had stranded runners on the corners in the fifth, but their first three batters reached base to start the home sixth and Headley tied the game with a sacrifice fly.
James Russell then took over for Hammel and promptly served up a pitch to pinch-hitter Carlos Quentin, who drove it to left for an RBI single. Brian Schlitter came on the mound and Gyorko greeted him with a double to center that scored two more runs as Emilio Bonifacio misplayed the ball for a 4-1 lead.
Huston Street gave up a two-run home run to Castro with no outs in the ninth, but retired the next three batters for his 14th save of the season.
