Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The Tampa Bay Rays designated relief pitcher Heath Bell for assignment on Sunday.
Bell appeared in 13 games for the Rays this season, posting a 1-1 record with a 7.27 ERA over 17 1/3 innings. He pitched in the past two games against the Yankees, earning the win in Friday's 14-inning marathon with 2 1/3 frames of four-hit relief.
Tampa Bay acquired Bell from Arizona this past winter. The Rays now have 10 days to place the 36-year-old right-hander on waivers, trade or realease him.
Right-hander Nathan Karns was recalled from Triple-A Durham to replace Bell on the active roster. Karns was 2-2 with an 8.20 ERA over six starts for Durham.
Karns made three starts for the Nationals last season. He was 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA.
