Schafer sustained the injury while stretching in the on-deck circle as he waited for a pinch-hitting appearance against the Pirates on Thursday.
The 27-year-old outfielder batted .214 with four doubles and two runs batted in over 10 games with the Brewers this season.
Milwaukee also activated first baseman Lyle Overbay from the paternity list on Sunday.
