San Diego Chargers Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Manti Te'o, LB8/17/2014 3:12:00 PM
Description: San Diego second-year linebacker Manti Te'o suffered a left foot sprain in the Chargers preseason game against Seattle, according to a Union-Tribune San Diego report
Insight: He missed five games last season after injuring his right foot versus the seahawks last preseason, but the team hopes this isn't as bad.
Ryan Mathews, RB8/8/2014 11:04:00 AM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews fumbled the ball at the goal line in the preseason opener.
Insight: Mathews has had a fumbling problem in the past, so this is alarming despite coach Mike McCoy saying he would continue to use him. If the problem persists the Chargers have other options in Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown so this situation should be monitored.
Branden Oliver, RB8/8/2014 11:04:00 AM
Description: University at Buffalo rookie Branden Oliver was impressive in rushing for 64 yards and a score on just seven carries.
Insight: Even if he makes the final 53-man roster we have a hard time envisioning him with fantasy value with Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown in front of him on the depth chart.
Brandon Flowers, CB6/24/2014 9:26:00 PM
Description: Brandon Flowers has reached a one-year deal with San Diego. SOURCE: Jason La Canfora, CBS Sports
Insight: Flowers was cut by Kansas City earlier this month. Flowers made 68 tackles last year en route to his first Pro Bowl appearance.
Vincent Brown, WR6/6/2014 12:12:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Vincent Brown will apparently be the No. 4 receiver because he is so versatility, according to beat writer Michael Gehlken.
Insight: Malcom Floyd, Eddie Royal and Keenan Allen will play the X, Y,Z spots, respectively, with Brown playing the utility role. It likely kills any fantasy value.
Malcom Floyd, WR5/28/2014 3:55:00 PM
Description: San Diego receiver Malcom Floyd (neck) said he has been cleared for contact, according to Michael Gehlken of the Union-Tribune.
Insight: Floyd suffered a career-threatening neck injury on Sept. 15 last season. A doctor determined that Floyd isn't at greater risk of a spinal injury if he continues playing. With Floyd out, rookie Keenan Allen stepped up as Philip Rivers' No. 1 target and had 1,000 yards. If Floyd returns this season, he'll compete with Eddie Royal and Vincent Brown for the No. 2 receiver job, though he won't have much fantasy value with veteran Antonio Gates and 23-year-old Ladarius Green around at tight end and Danny Woodhead catching balls out of the backfield.
Malcom Floyd, WR5/19/2014 8:23:00 PM
Description: San Diego receiver Malcom Floyd (neck) is expected to play in 2014, according to the Union-Tribune.
Insight: Floyd suffered a career-threatening neck injury on Sept. 15 last season. A doctor determined that Floyd isn't at greater risk of a spinal injury if he continues playing. "The doc said ... I'm at risk just like anybody else," Floyd said Monday. "There's not really a worry." With Floyd out, rookie Keenan Allen stepped up as Philip Rivers' No.
Donald Brown, RB3/12/2014 10:09:00 AM
Description: Donald Brown is headed to the Chargers on a three-year, $10.5 million deal. SOURCE: Ian Rapoport, NFL Network
Insight: Toby Gerhart received the same money from Jacksonville in a deal last night. Brown has never rushed for more than 645 yards in a season and we don't anticipate that changing in San Diego. He'll be competing with Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead for carries in 2014.
Danario Alexander, WR2/19/2014 12:15:00 PM
Description: Free agent wideout Danario Alexander is dealing with major complications from his knee surgery, according to foxsports.com.
Insight: Alexander had surgery on his torn right ACL last August and had to undergo a second surgery on the ligament in January. Since that procedure, Alexander has undergone "multiple" surgeries because of infection. The 25-year-old already had undergone five surgeries on his left knee dating back to before he entered the NFL when he tore his right ACL during the 2013 preseason. The receiver showed promise with 37 catches, 658 yards and seven touchdowns in the final nine games of 2012 for the Chargers but his career is in jeopardy.
Danario Alexander, WR2/7/2014 1:57:00 PM
Description: Free agent wideout Danario Alexander had a second surgery on his torn right ACL last month and is questionable for the start of next season.
Insight: Alexander has little hope of signing more than a one-year deal after seven knee surgeries.
Philip Rivers, QB2/1/2014 9:30:00 PM
Description: And the award for NFL's Comeback Player of the Year goes to ... none other than Chargers QB Philip Rivers.
Insight: Peyton Manning won Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2012. He's since graduated to the MVP award. While we don't predict that will happen with Rivers, he did have a remarkable year, throwing for 32 TD and 4,478 passing yards en route to a 105.5 quarterback rating. He figures to be a top-ten quarterback heading into next year's fantasy draft.
Keenan Allen, WR1/12/2014 8:40:00 PM
Description: Keenan Allen came on strong in the second half Sunday against the Broncos. He finished with six catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns after half time.
Insight: That came after being held without a catch for the game's first two quarters. Both of Allen's touchdown receptions came in the fourth quarter. The Chargers scored all 17 of their points during that same period. Allen, a third-round pick out of Cal-Berkeley in 2013, is on the cusp of fantasy superstardom. Make sure to lock him up if you own him in a keeper or dynasty league.
Manti Te'o, LB1/12/2014 6:16:00 PM
Description: CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson reports that Chargers rookie linebacker Manti Te'o will not play the second half of Sunday's game against the Broncos.
Insight: He's already been diagnosed with a concussion. Bront Bird will have to fill in at inside linebacker.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/12/2014 5:25:00 PM
Description: Update: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews returned to the game moments ago.
Insight: It looks like he's okay. Mathews (ankle) is operating at about 50 percent right now so don't be surprised if he leaves the game for an extended period of time like he did earlier. So far, the 26-year-old has rushed four times for 25 yards.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/12/2014 5:20:00 PM
Description: San Diego halfback Ryan Mathews had two carries on the team's first drive of the game Sunday against the Broncos but he hasn't played since.
Insight: Mathews didn't practice all week because of an ankle injury and he's clearly nowhere close to 100 percent. We'd be surprised if he returns to this game. Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown will carry the load with Mathews hobbled.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/12/2014 3:31:00 PM
Description: Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is active for Sunday's playoff game against the Broncos.
Insight: Mathews has been limited in practice for the past few weeks but he hasn't had to miss a game. He rushed for 1,021 yards and six touchdowns on 218 carries (4.7 ypc) over his last 11 games of the year, including 473 yards and three scores in his final four.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/12/2014 10:52:00 AM
Description: The Chargers expect Ryan Mathews (ankle) to play in Sunday's playoff game at Denver, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
Insight: Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Woodhead would cover for Mathews if he can't go, but Mathews has been limited in practice for the past few weeks and still hasn't missed a game. He rushed for 1,021 yards and six touchdowns on 218 carries (4.7 ypc) over his last 11 games of the year, including 473 yards and three scores the final four.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/10/2014 2:43:00 PM
Description: San Diego tailback Ryan Mathews was forced from Sunday's game with an ankle injury and missed all three practices this week.
Insight: Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Woodhead would cover for Mathews if he can't go, but Mathews has been limited in practice for the past few weeks and still hasn't missed a game. He's in the late Sunday game so he'll have the most recovery time possible.
Nick Hardwick, C1/6/2014 11:50:00 AM
Description: Chargers center Nick Hardwick left Sunday's game after suffering a stinger and is questionable for Sunday's AFC Divisional Playoff against Denver.
Insight: San Diego used Rich Ohrnberger at the center spot with Hardwick sidelined and didn't miss a beat.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/6/2014 11:32:00 AM
Description: San Diego tailback Ryan Mathews was forced from Sunday's game with an ankle injury and is listed as questionable for Sunday's AFC Divisional Playoff against Denver.
Insight: It seemed to be an aggravation of an injury he suffered earlier in the season. Danny Woodhead led the team in carries in Mathews' absence, rushing 15 times for 54 yards and one touchdown. Ronnie Brown also saw some extra playing time. This could be a shared situation unless Mathews is back to 100 percent by game-time.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/5/2014 6:48:00 PM
Description: San Diego halfback Ryan Mathews was forced from Sunday's game with an ankle injury.
Insight: It seemed to be an aggravation of an injury he suffered earlier in the season. Danny Woodhead led the team in carries in Mathews' absence, rushing 15 times for 54 yards and one touchdown. Ronnie Brown also saw some extra looks, finishing the afternoon with 77 yards on eight totes. The Chargers play in Denver next week. Mathews should be considered questionable for that contest.
Nick Hardwick, C1/5/2014 1:28:00 PM
Description: Chargers center Nick Hardwick left Sunday's game after taking a blow to the head.
Insight: San Diego will use Rich Ohrnberger at the center spot while Hardwick goes through the concussion protocol.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/5/2014 12:20:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not practice Wednesday or Thursday but the team was just protecting their injury-prone back and he's active for Sunday's game with Cincinnati.
Insight: Mathews has been a top running back over the second half of the season and San Diego will need him to play well if they are going to beat Cincinnati on the road in the bad weather.
Ryan Mathews, RB1/2/2014 3:10:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not practice Wednesday or Thursday but still is expected to play Sunday against the Bengals.
Insight: Mathews has been a top running back over the second half of the season and San Diego will need him if they are going to beat Cincinnati on the road in the bad weather.
Ryan Mathews, RB12/26/2013 3:26:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not practice Wednesday or Thursday but still is expected to play Sunday against the Chiefs, according to coach Mike McCoy.
Insight: Mathews has been a top running back over the second half of the season and against the Chiefs' backups could have another big day.
Ryan Mathews, RB12/25/2013 10:54:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not practice Wednesday but is expected to play Sunday against the Chiefs, according to coach Mike McCoy.
Insight: Mathews has been a top running back over the second half of the season and against the Chiefs' backups could have another big day.
Keenan Allen, WR12/12/2013 8:22:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen is officially active for Thursday's game in Denver.
Insight: He injured his shoulder in Sunday's win over the Giants but was never in danger of missing Week 15, even with only a few days to prepare. A loss on Thursday would probably end whatever slim hopes the Chargers had of making the postseason.
Keenan Allen, WR12/10/2013 8:37:00 AM
Description: San Diego wideout Keenan Allen participated in the Chargers' Monday walkthrough.
Insight: Allen injured his shoulder in Sunday's game, but appears to be on schedule to play in Thursday's game against Denver. He's the Chargers' best wideout.
Eddie Royal, WR12/8/2013 3:48:00 PM
Description: San Diego receiver Eddie Royal is active for Sunday's game against the Giants.
Insight: Royal sat out last week with a chest injury. He got off to a hot start with five touchdowns in his first two games but has only scored twice since then.
Antonio Gates, TE12/4/2013 4:52:00 PM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates (hamstring) practiced Wednesday, according to Michael Gehlken of the Union-Tribune.
Insight: Gates is ahead of last week's schedule, when he missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday before playing in Week 13 against the Bengals. He's been targeted 18 times the last two games but caught just eight of them for 62 yards. Philip Rivers has had a better connection lately with backup tight end Ladarius Green, hitting him nine times for 206 yards and two touchdowns on 16 targets the last three games.
Ladarius Green, TE12/1/2013 7:31:00 PM
Description: Chargers tight end Ladarius Green caught two passes for 45 yards and a touchdown Sunday against the Bengals.
Insight: It was Green's second straight game with a touchdown and third straight game with at least five targets. Despite the presence of Antonio Gates, Green could be a top-15 tight end for the rest of the season.
Keenan Allen, WR12/1/2013 7:27:00 PM
Description: San Diego wideout Keenan Allen hit the 100-yard receiving bonus for the second straight game Sunday against the Bengals.
Insight: Allen had 106 yards on eight catches one week after grabbing nine balls for 124 yards. Philip Rivers' top target has 58 receptions, 843 yards and three touchdowns this season. Allen was the eighth receiver taken in the 2013 NFL Draft, but he leads all rookies in receiving yardage by a wide margin.
Eddie Royal, WR12/1/2013 3:22:00 PM
Description: Chargers wideout Eddie Royal is inactive for Sunday's game against Cincinnati.
Insight: He's battling a chest injury. The only San Diego wide receiver worth starting in fantasy is Keenan Allen.
Ryan Mathews, RB12/1/2013 3:21:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (hamstring) will play Sunday against the Bengals.
Insight: Mathews left Week 12 against the Chiefs due to a hamstring injury, but not before producing double-digit fantasy points for the fifth time in his last six games. He's a decent flex play but is also at risk of aggravating his injury so proceed with caution. Danny Woodhead is the better option in San Diego's backfield.
Antonio Gates, TE12/1/2013 3:10:00 PM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates (hamstring) is active for Sunday's game against the Bengals.
Insight: ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday morning that Gates is unsure of how much he'll be able to play through the injury. Ladarius Green has posted two straight 80-yard games and is a solid TE2 this week even with Gates active. Gates owners likely don't have better options available at this time so they have to roll with him.
Eddie Royal, WR11/30/2013 3:28:00 PM
Description: The Chargers have downgraded Eddie Royal to doubtful ahead of Sunday's game against Cincinnati. SOURCE: Michael Gehlken, San Diego Union-Tribune
Insight: He's battling a chest injury. The only San Diego receiver worth starting in fantasy is Keenan Allen.
Antonio Gates, TE11/30/2013 2:00:00 PM
Description: San Diego tight end Antonio Gates admitted that his hamstring injury is "tricky." SOURCE: San Diego Union-Tribune
Insight: It sounds like he might be on a snap count Sunday versus Cincinnati. The veteran hasn't topped 100 yards in a game since Week 4.
Antonio Gates, TE11/29/2013 2:53:00 PM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates (hamstring) missed Thursday's practice, but returned to the field on Friday and is expected to play against Cincinnati on Sunday.
Insight: Coach Mike McCoy recently said that Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates can complete passes "with a blindfold," meaning Gates can play without practicing at all. The tight end has already surpassed last years reception and tardage total.
Ryan Mathews, RB11/28/2013 3:09:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (hamstring) practiced Thursday, according to Michael Gehlken of the Union-Tribune.
Insight: Mathews left Week 12 against the Chiefs due to a hamstring injury, but not before producing double-digit fantasy points for the fifth time in his last six games. He'll be a decent flex play if he is active Sunday, but he is also at risk of aggravating the injury so proceed with caution.
Antonio Gates, TE11/28/2013 3:04:00 PM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates (hamstring) missed Thursday's practice, according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Insight: Gates hasn't practiced all week, but he is expected to play Sunday against the Bengals. Coach Mike McCoy recently said that Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates can complete passes "with a blindfold," meaning Gates can play without practicing at all. If he has to miss the game, however, Ladarius Green would be a TE1. Green has produced seven catches for 161 yards and a touchdown over the last two games.
Ryan Mathews, RB11/28/2013 2:16:00 PM
Description: According to Eric D. Williams of espn.com, Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (hamstring) "should be fine and ready" to play Sunday against the Bengals.
Insight: Mathews left Week 12 against the Chiefs due to a hamstring injury, but not before producing double-digit fantasy points for the fifth time in his last six games. He'll be a decent flex play if he is active Sunday, but he is also at risk of aggravating the injury so proceed with caution.
Antonio Gates, TE11/27/2013 3:28:00 PM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates wasn't on the practice field on Wednesday.
Insight: Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune suggests it could have just been a rest day. Gates caught only three of his nine targets in Week 12 against the Chiefs.
Ryan Mathews, RB11/27/2013 2:34:00 PM
Description: Chargers halfback Ryan Mathews didn't practice on Wednesday. SOURCE: Michael Gehlken, San Diego Union-Tribune
Insight: Mathews sat out with a hamstring injury. Head coach Mike McCoy is hoping to have Mathews back for Sunday's game but if he can't go, scat back Danny Woodhead will have a chance to see a big workload against the Bengals.
Ryan Mathews, RB11/27/2013 10:13:00 AM
Description: San Diego halfback Ryan Mathews hasn't been ruled out for Sunday's game against Cincinnati. SOURCE: ESPN
Insight: Mathews aggravated a hamstring injury in Sunday's come-from-behind win over Kansas City. He's getting closer to his second career 1,000-yard season (721 yards with five games to go). If Mathews is inactive or limited at all on Sunday, Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown will handle most of the carries.
Keenan Allen, WR11/24/2013 6:32:00 PM
Description: San Diego wideout Keenan Allen exploded for 124 yards on nine catches Sunday in a win over Kansas City.
Insight: It would have been even sweeter if he had managed to find the end zone. Still, Allen is having one heck of a rookie season. He's currently on pace for 1,072 yards, which would be the most by a rookie wideout since Anquan Boldin in 2003 (1,377 yards in 16 games).
Philip Rivers, QB11/24/2013 6:22:00 PM
Description: The Chargers captured an upset win over Kansas City thanks to 392 yards of offense from Philip Rivers.
Insight: Philips delivered three touchdown throws in San Diego's stunning 41-38 victory. His 106.6 quarterback rating through 11 games is a career-high.
Ryan Mathews, RB11/24/2013 3:44:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews left Sunday's game against Kansas City with a hamstring injury.
Insight: He's questionable to return. Mathews has been a much better fantasy option of late and had already accumulated 65 yards and a rushing touchdown before leaving. Danny Woodhead should get most of the work the rest of the way with Ronnie Brown as his backup.
Eddie Royal, WR11/24/2013 12:06:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Eddie Royal (foot) is active for Week 12.
Insight: Royal has been held down by the injury, catching just four balls for 56 yards over the past two weeks. His fantasy value has dropped to its lowest level of the season and many fantasy owners are rightfully not starting him.
Keenan Allen, WR11/24/2013 12:00:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen suffered a knee injury in Week 11 but it won't keep him from playing Sunday against Kansas City.
Insight: Allen has cooled off a bit after logging three 100-yard outings in a four-game stretch last month but he's still the most dangerous weapon San Diego has in the passing game outside of tight end Antonio Gates. Even against a solid Chiefs secondary, Allen is worthy of flex/WR2 consideration.
Keenan Allen, WR11/20/2013 2:52:00 PM
Description: San Diego wideout Keenan Allen was back at practice on Wednesday. SOURCE: Michael Gehlken, San Diego Union Tribune
Insight: Allen tweaked his knee late in Sunday's loss to the Dolphins. It looks like he has a good chance of suiting up this week against Kansas City.
Keenan Allen, WR11/19/2013 5:11:00 PM
Description: Chargers coach Mike McCoy said Monday that receiver Keenan Allen (knee) will play Sunday against the Chiefs, according to ESPN.com.
Insight: "He's fine," McCoy said. "He'll be playing, which is great." Allen was spotted on the sideline with his knee iced and wrapped late in Sunday's game against Miami while San Diego attempted to stage a comeback. Allen has had under 50 yards in each of the last two games but remains one of Philip Rivers' favorite targets. He's a WR3 in Week 12.
Keenan Allen, WR11/17/2013 7:02:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen suffered a right knee injury Sunday against the Dolphins, according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Insight: Allen was spotted with his knee wrapped and iced on the sideline and wasn't on the field for the team's final drive. He finished with 45 yards on three catches in the game.
Eddie Royal, WR11/8/2013 4:50:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Eddie Royal (foot) is questionable for Week 10.
Insight: Royal has been questionable for each of the last two games but played both and had at least 56 yards and a touchdown in both. His fantasy value is entirely dependent on whether or not he scores.
Keenan Allen, WRHot11/3/2013 5:14:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Keenan Allen had a career-high 128 receiving yards and a touchdown on eight catches Sunday against Washington.
Insight: Allen has emerged as Philip Rivers' favorite downfield target. Over his last five games, the rookie receiver has accumulated 497 yards and three touchdowns on 31 catches.
Eddie Royal, WR11/3/2013 11:46:00 AM
Description: Chargers receiver Eddie Royal is active for Week 9.
Insight: After grabbing five touchdowns over the first two games, Royal has done little over the past five contests. He did put up double digits in the game before the Chargers went on bye.
Ryan Mathews, RB10/20/2013 6:22:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews has quietly turned into a reliable option for San Diego.
Insight: Mathews has carried the ball at least 16 times in five of the last six games, and the one game he didn't he left early with a concussion. He's had 43 carries for 212 yards and a touchdown the last two games as the Chargers have found a way to keep both Mathews and Danny Woodhead involved.
Keenan Allen, WRHot10/20/2013 3:33:00 PM
Description: Chargers rookie wide receiver Keenan Allen went to the locker room in the third quarter of Sunday's game with an undisclosed injury but he later returned to the game.
Insight: Allen has been Philip Rivers' go-to receiver the previous three weeks and had 67 yards on three receptions Sunday against the Jaguars at the time of his injury.
Keenan Allen, WRHot10/20/2013 3:06:00 PM
Description: Chargers rookie wide receiver Keenan Allen went to the locker room in the third quarter of Sunday's game with an undisclosed injury.
Insight: Allen has been Philip Rivers' go-to receiver the previous three weeks and had 67 yards on three receptions Sunday against the Jaguars. We should have an update soon.
Keenan Allen, WRHot10/15/2013 4:42:00 PM
Description: Chargers rookie wide receiver Keenan Allen has produced 20 receptions for 302 yards and two touchdowns on 27 targets the last three weeks.
Insight: He had nine catches for 107 yards and a score Monday night against the Colts and appears to be Philip Rivers' go-to wideout. Allen can be trusted as a WR2 in Week 7 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Chad Rinehart, OL10/14/2013 10:07:00 AM
Description: Chargers offensive lineman Chad Rinehart will miss Monday's game against Indianapolis due to a foot injury.
Insight: The Chargers' offensive line has been hit with injuries with Rinehart out, Mike Harris placed on injured reserve, Jeromy Clary dealing with an injured collarbone, D.J. Fluker with a calf and King Dunlap with a concussion. Fortunately, Fluker, Clary and Dunlap are expected to be active for the game.
Manti Te'o, LB10/14/2013 9:58:00 AM
Description: Chargers linebacker Manti Te'o is probable for Monday's game against Indianapolis.
Insight: Te'o sprained his foot early in early August and only returned to the lineup two games ago. He's splitting time at inside linebacker with Reggie Walker and has eight tackles over the last two contests.
Richard Marshall, DB10/14/2013 9:55:00 AM
Description: Charger DB Richard Marshall is questionable for Monday's game against Indianapolis with a groin injury.
Insight: Marshall has 28 tackles this season and it would certainly be helpful to have him back their to defend against Andrew Luck, Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton.
Ryan Mathews, RB10/12/2013 9:04:00 PM
Description: Ryan Mathews practiced again Saturday and is now listed as probable for Monday's game against the Colts.
Insight: Mathews has recovered fully from the concussion he suffered last week against the Raiders. He hasn't scored a touchdown since Week 1 and rarely plays on passing downs thanks to the emergence of Danny Woodhead. Only start Mathews if you're desperate to fill a flex position.
Ryan Mathews, RB10/11/2013 4:42:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (concussion) returned to practice Friday.
Insight: The Chargers play Monday night against the Colts so he has an extra to get ready for the game, but fantasy owners can avoid him. Danny Woodhead has been stealing snaps and putting up better fantasy numbers and Mathews' status likely won't be decided until Sunday night or Monday morning.
Ryan Mathews, RB10/10/2013 6:46:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (concussion) hasn't been cleared to practice, according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Insight: Mathews suffered a concussion Sunday night at Oakland. The Chargers play Monday night against the Colts so he has an extra to get ready for the game, but we don't expect him to play. Danny Woodhead has been stealing snaps and putting up better numbers than Mathews anyway.
Ryan Mathews, RB10/4/2013 3:12:00 PM
Description: Halfback Ryan Mathews was a late addition to the Chargers' injury report on Friday.
Insight: That's unsettling news for fantasy owners as San Diego doesn't play until 11:30 on Sunday night (they have the A's and Tigers to thank for that). If Matthews is out or limited, backup Danny Woodhead will be a must-start in all fantasy formats.
Dwight Freeney, DE10/1/2013 7:51:00 PM
Description: Chargers OLB Dwight Freeney was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.
Insight: He's done for the year with a torn quadriceps. Freeney recorded double-digit sacks in seven of his first nine seasons in the NFL but hasn't done it since 2010.
Malcom Floyd, WR10/1/2013 7:45:00 PM
Description: The Chargers have placed receiver Malcom Floyd on injured reserve.
Insight: Floyd took a hit to the head in Week 2 against the Eagles and was taken off the field on a stretcher. He'll miss the rest of the season with a neck injury. Despite Philip Rivers' resurgence, no Chargers receiver has emerged as a reliable fantasy option as Antonio Gates and Danny Woodhead are Rivers' top two targets.
Dwight Freeney, DE9/30/2013 9:52:00 AM
Description: Chargers DE/LB Dwight Freeney suffered a torn quadriceps in Sunday's victory over Dallas.
Insight: Freeney was injured in the second quarter and did not return. We await the decision on whether this will require a trip to the injured reserve. Larry English is the most likely candidate to take his spot in the lineup.
Philip Rivers, QBHot9/29/2013 7:42:00 PM
Description: San Diego QB Philip Rivers exploded for over 400 yards Sunday against Dallas.
Insight: After falling off the map in 2012, Rivers has come back strong with 11 TD and just two interceptions in his first four games this season. Sunday was the veteran's second 400-yard performance in the last three weeks. He'll try to keep it going next week against Oakland.
Vincent Brown, WR9/26/2013 4:01:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Vincent Brown has played a higher percentage of snaps than any other San Diego receiver at 93 percent, but he has just eight catches on 14 targets for 50 yards and a touchdown. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, coach Mike McCoy said that Brown's touches "will come."
Insight: "There may be something where Vincent may be number one in the progression, but a coverage changes so you do not get it to him," McCoy said. "It’s not like we’re not trying to get him the ball. It’s just Philip taking what the defense is giving him. All the receivers have done a great job of having the flexibility to move them around. In some of the no-huddle we have run, whether they are an X receiver or a Z receiver, they have done everything we've asked them to do." Brown was expected to be the Chargers most targeted receiver this season but that hasn't happened yet. Fantasy owners should not even think about using him until we see something positive on the field.
Eddie Royal, WR9/22/2013 6:24:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Eddie Royal caught two passes for 34 yards against the Titans in Week 3.
Insight: Welcome back to Earth. After grabbing five touchdowns over the first two games, Royal was only targeted twice Sunday. It's tougher to produce when the defense keys in on you. Royal actually led Chargers wideouts but was fourth on the team in yards . Running back Danny Woodhead and tight ends Antonio Gates and Ladarius Green combined for 158 yards.
King Dunlap, OT9/22/2013 5:16:00 PM
Description: Chargers tackle King Dunlap suffered a concussion in Week 3.
Insight: The injury left the San Diego offensive line short-handed because Chad Rinehart also went down in the game and they started the contest withouttackle D.J. Fluker. The multiple injuries could be what caused a drop in Philip Rivers' productivity.
Manti Te'o, LB9/18/2013 2:53:00 PM
Description: Chargers second-round pick, linebacker Manti Te'o, was back at practice for the first time since getting injured in the preseason opener.
Insight: Te'o sprained his foot early in early August and will need some time before returning to the lineup, but the Chargers need all the defenders they can get after yielding 960 total yards over the first two games.
Malcom Floyd, WR9/16/2013 4:20:00 PM
Description: Chargers receiver Malcom Floyd will be in a neck brace for at least a week, according to NFL.com Ian Rapoport.
Insight: Floyd took a hit to the head Sunday against the Eagles and was taken off the field on a stretcher. However, his tests revealed nothing major and the receiver traveled home with the team. Label him "out indefinitely" and add Eddie Royal to your waive claim list.
Malcom Floyd, WR9/15/2013 6:46:00 PM
Description: Chargers coach Mike McCoy said that receiver Malcom Floyd is fine, according to Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com.
Insight: Floyd took a hit to the head Sunday against the Eagles and was taken off the field on a stretcher. However, his tests revealed nothing major and the receiver will travel home with the team.
Philip Rivers, QBHot9/15/2013 5:45:00 PM
Description: Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has seven touchdowns after two weeks.
Insight: He threw three scores and had 419 yards on 36-of-47 passing Sunday at Philadelphia. After two straight disappointing seasons, Rivers appears to be back on the fantasy radar now that Mike McCoy is heading up this operation instead of Norv Turner.
Eddie Royal, WR9/15/2013 5:42:00 PM
Description: With three more touchdowns Sunday at Philadelphia, Chargers receiver Eddie Royal tied his career high for a season.
Insight: Royal shockingly has five touchdowns in the first two games this season. He scored that many combined in his previous four NFL seasons after grabbing five as a rookie. While Royal isn't likely to keep this up, he clearly has the favor of quarterback Philip Rivers.
Antonio Gates, TE9/15/2013 5:40:00 PM
Description: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates hauled in eight balls for 124 yards Sunday against the Eagles.
Insight: Gates is no longer the feared weapon he used to be -- this was his first 100-yard game since Week 17 of 2011 -- but he's still a TE1.
Malcom Floyd, WR9/15/2013 2:46:00 PM
Description: Chargers wideout Malcom Floyd took a huge hit from DeMeco Ryans on the first play from scrimmage in the second half and was taken off on a stretcher.
Insight: Floyd had already totaled five catches for 102 yards in the first half. It appears to be a head or neck injury.
Ryan Mathews, RB9/10/2013 2:25:00 PM
Description: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (33 yards rushing, 22 receiving, 1 TD) was in on less than half of the team's offensive plays in Week 1 against Houston.
Insight: Considering San Diego was ahead and wasn't in a situation that they were forced to throw, this isn't good news. Ronnie Brown played 24 snaps and Danny Woodhead 9.
Eddie Royal, WR9/9/2013 11:49:00 AM
Description: San Diego wideout Eddie Royal is probable for Monday night's game with Houston after practicing all week.
Insight: Royal suffered a concussion and a chest injury in preseason, but should be ready to go. He'll be the slot receiver with Malcom Floyd and Vincent Brown starting on the outside.
Malcom Floyd, WR9/7/2013 6:33:00 PM
Description: Chargers wideout Malcom Floyd (knee) is probable to play Week 1.
Insight: Floyd suffered a knee sprain in the second week of August. With Danario Alexander out, he'll be the top deep threat for Philip Rivers, but Vincent Brown is better fit for coach Mike McCoy's short passing offense and could draw the most targets.
Manti Te'o, LB9/7/2013 4:18:00 PM
Description: Chargers second-round pick, linebacker Manti Te'o, has been ruled out of Monday's versus Houston. SOURCE: San Diego Union-Tribune
Insight: Te'o sprained his foot early in early August and hasn't practiced with the team in almost a month. He's likely to miss more than one week as he'll need to work his way back into playing shape.
Manti Te'o, LB9/5/2013 9:26:00 PM
Description: It doesn't look like Chargers second-round pick Manti Te'o will play Monday versus Houston. SOURCE: San Diego Union-Tribune
Insight: Te'o sprained his foot early on in the preseason and hasn't practiced with the team in almost a month. The Chargers have not given a timetable for when he might be back.
Malcom Floyd, WR8/26/2013 3:23:00 PM
Description: Chargers wideout Malcom Floyd's knee has improved enough that he was back at practice on Monday.
Insight: With Danario Alexander out for the season, Floyd will be a huge part of the Chargers' passing game along with an untested Vincent Brown and an aging Antonio Gates and a mediocre Eddir Royal. He's expected to be ready for Week 1.
