NFL Preseason Preview - San Francisco (2-1) at San Diego (1-2)

By John McMullen, NFL Editor

(Sports Network) - The San Francisco 49ers will close out the preseason against the San Diego Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium.

The Niners improved their preseason record to 2-1 with a 34-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick led the 49ers on an 11-play, 84-yd. drive, capped off with a 5-yard touchdown pass to rookie wideout Quinton Patton.

"When you get out there and you find your rhythm, that's how you want to be playing," said Kaepernick.

On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Ahmad Brooks sacked Vikings QB Christian Ponder on the opening series of the game, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Aldon Smith. Meanwhile, safety C.J. Spillman intercepted a pass after the ball was tipped in the air by Nnamdi Asomugha.

Kicker Phil Dawson connected on both of his field goal attempts and now ranks tied for fourth in the NFL with 21 points in the preseason.

"I saw a lot of good football and I'm pleased with the way our guys worked, practiced all week and then came out and played in the game," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "I thought there was a lot of good football out there."

The Chargers won their first game for new head coach Mike McCoy last Saturday, defeating Arizona, 24-7, at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

The Bolts were efficient on offense, scoring touchdowns on 13- and 14-play drives to jump out to a 14-0 lead at halftime. Ryan Mathews rushed for a game- high 57 yards and a touchdown, while tight end Ladarius Green caught a game- long 57-yard pass to set up another score.

San Diego's special teams also came up big against the Cardinals as Darrell Stuckey blocked a punt, rookie Kwame Geathers blocked a field goal and fellow rookie Keenan Allen returned a punt 44 yards.

"This is the way we like to play week in and week out," said Chargers rookie head coach Mike McCoy. "All three phases made plays and did their jobs to the best of their ability.

"The number one thing is we're in this business to win. As a new staff kind of recreating an identity here of what we're doing and what we expect of players, it's all about winning. We're going to compete every day in everything we do. We told everyone that in the organization. We've got to do whatever we can do to be the best in everything we do as an organization."

The 49ers and Chargers have met 41 times in the preseason, including every year since 1987, with the 49ers leading the all-time series 21-20. San Francisco has won each of the last three preseason games against the Chargers.
