Description: The best thing that can be said about Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka's second start is that he didn't hurt himself.
Insight: Tanaka was ugly, throwing 50 pitches and yielding seven hits and five earned runs in 1 2/3 IP.

Description: Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka will receive one more start in the 2014 season.
Insight: Tanaka is set to start on Saturday at Fenway, which is giving the pitcher confidence that he can avoid elbow surgery according to ESPN New York. Tanaka returned to the mound on Sunday and pitched five 1/3 innings and allowed one run on five hits in a victory. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said his right hander will be allotted 80-85 pitches against Boston.

Description: Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) earns victory in return to mound.
Insight: The Yankees were clearly keeping him on a pitch count, as he left the game with only 70 pitches thhrown. That totaled 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball, and four strikeouts. It is nice to see Tanaka get back out there, and return to form.

Description: Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) will be on the mound for the Yankees for the first time since July 8th, when New York hosts Toronto Sunday afternoon.
Insight: He got some work in the Yanks' spring training complex, but will face a big test today. Tanaka was a CY Young candidate before he went down with the injury. He is 12-4 with a 2.51 ERA in 2014.

9/15/2014 3:10:00 PM
Description: Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) threw five innings Monday at the Yankees spring training complex.
Insight: Tanaka didn't give up a run, though he was facing mainly youngsters with little experience. The right-hander didn't feel any pain, which is the most important thing to get out of the session. There is still a chance he appears in a Yankees game before the end of the season.

9/7/2014 10:22:00 AM
Description: Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) threw a 34-pitch bullpen session on Saturday.
Insight: Tanaka featured all his pitches in the successful pen session. The right-hander will either throw live batting practice or a simulated game next. Yankees manager Joe Girardi remains hopeful that Tanaka will return this month.

9/4/2014 5:01:00 PM
Description: Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday according to WFAN.
Insight: After getting shutdown with a tired arm last week, Tanaka is back on track, throwing a successful flat-ground session on Tuesday and is going ahead with mound work this weekend. Despite the progress, it is highly unlikely Tanaka will pitch another game this season.

9/2/2014 8:56:00 PM
Description: Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) will throw a bullpen session this week.
Insight: Tanaka threw on flat ground on Tuesday and was cleared to begin working off the mound. Late last week, he was shut down due to arm fatigue, but he appears to be back on track with his rehab. He still might not be back to make an impact this season though.

8/29/2014 5:00:00 PM
Description: Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) has been shut down from throwing due to "general soreness" in his pitching arm.
Insight: Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports there is no scheduled doctor appointment, so it appears to be a minor setback. Tanaka has said the pain is more in his forearm than in his elbow. It is looking less and less likely that Tanaka will make a fantasy impact again this season.

Insight: Tanaka continues to clear hurdles as he attempts to come back from a partially torn UCL, but he's walking a tightrope anytime he steps on the mound. One setback will likely mean Tommy John surgery.

Description: Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) threw a bullpen session Saturday and pitching coach Larry Rothschild said he came through it "fine," according to Erik Boland of Newsday.
Insight: Tanaka is fighting long odds in trying to avoid Tommy John surgery for his partially torn UCL. How he feels Sunday will go a long way toward determining if he'll be able to return this season.

Description: Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) threw Monday for the first time since he was diagnosed with a partially torn UCL. SOURCE: mlb.com
Insight: Tanaka threw 25 pitches from 60 feet on flat ground and said everything felt normal. He received a platelet-rich plasma injection three weeks ago. The right-hander is fighting long odds in trying to avoid Tommy John surgery, but he'll be back in September if rest and rehab do the trick.

7/10/2014 9:31:00 PM
Description: Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka has been diagnosed with a partially torn UCL.
Insight: He'll try six weeks of rehab and PRP injections, but the odds are not good for his return. Think Dr. James Andrews. It's a disaster for both the Yankees and fantasy owners to lose a hurler like Tanaka (12-4, 2.51 ERA, 1.005 WHIP).

7/9/2014 5:45:00 PM
Description: The Yankees have placed Masahiro Tanaka on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow soreness, according to mlb.com.
Insight: Tanaka has allowed nine runs on 19 hits and struck out eight in his last 13 2/3 innings. With CC Sabathia likely done for the season, Ivan Nova recovering from Tommy John surgery and Michael Pineda out indefinitely, the Yankees cannot afford to lose Tanaka for an extended period of time. He traveled to New York to have an MRI and the Yankees are waiting for the results.

Hot6/28/2014 10:06:00 PM
Description: Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka threw a complete game against the Red Sox Saturday night, but he took the loss after allowing a go-ahead solo homer to Mike Napoli in the top of the ninth.
Insight: Napoli hit a pitch into the first row in right-center field to put Boston ahead 2-1. Tanaka has been dominant this year, but home runs have been somewhat of an issue. In 106 2/3 innings, he's allowed 13 of them (1.1 HR/9) but 11 were solo shots.

Description: Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka needed 104 pitches to get through six innings and had a season-low four strikeouts Thursday afternoon against the Athletics, but he only allowed one run to pick up his ninth win of the season.
Insight: Tanaka's nine wins rank second in baseball to Toronto's Mark Buehrle. The 25-year-old hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any start this season.

5/31/2014 5:41:00 PM
Description: Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka produced another memorable outing Saturday against the Twins.
Insight: In eight innings, Tanaka (8-1, 2.06 ERA) allowed just four hits and one run (it was unearned), striking out nine while surrendering two walks. The rookie from Japan hasn't let up more than three earned runs in any of his 11 starts this season and looks to be a legitimate Cy Young contender. We'll see him pitch again Thursday against Oakland.

5/21/2014 9:19:00 AM
Description: New York right-hander Masahiro Tanaka dropped his first decision in almost two years Tuesday against the Cubs.
Insight: That breaks up a string of 42 consecutive starts without a loss. Tanaka wasn't awful (6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 7 K's, 1 BB) but he wasn't sharp either. He'll look to rebound Sunday against the White Sox.

Hot5/14/2014 10:11:00 PM
Description: Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka threw his first career shutout Wednesday against the Mets.
Insight: New York's pitching staff was crushed for 21 runs the past two games and currently has CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda and Ivan Nova on the DL, but Tanaka stepped up like a true ace to stop the bleeding. He allowed four hits, struck out eight and walked none to improve to 6-0 with a 2.17 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP. His K/BB this season is 66/7 in 58 innings.
