Insight: St. Louis gave the 22-year-old a chance to start in June, but he was limited to fewer than 90 pitches in all seven starts (4.45 ERA). He gave up two runs in 1 1/3 innings Wednesday in his return to the bullpen. The Cardinals acquired John Lackey and Justin Masterson the past two days so their five rotation spots are currently filled, but they could be sending Martinez down to get stretched out as insurance in case Michael Wacha doesn't return and someone else gets hurt.
