Probable Starting Pitchers: San Francisco - Ryan Vogelsong (4-3, 3.94) Arizona - Brandon McCarthy (1-9, 5.18)
(SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Vogelsong will try to shake off his season-long road troubles and get San Francisco back into the win column on Saturday night when the Giants resume a three-game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Vogelsong is 4-3 with a 3.94 earned run average on the season, but has pitched to a 4.88 ERA in six road assignments. His previous two outings came at home, a loss to Washington on June 9 and a no-decision versus Colorado five days later.
The right-hander yielded six runs over six innings versus the Nationals, then was charged with three runs on seven hits and a walk in five frames of work against the Rockies. San Francisco, though, dropped a 5-4 decision.
Vogelsong is just 2-4 lifetime versus the Diamondbacks with a 4.66 ERA in 17 meetings with 11 starts. He faced them at home on April 10 and did not get a decision, with the 36-year-old giving up four runs over five innings.
San Francisco saw its losing streak reach six games in a row, a season high, on Friday with a 4-1 setback to Arizona. Pablo Sandoval had an RBI triple and Buster Posey notched two hits, but starter Tim Lincecum was charged with four runs over six innings in defeat.
"It wasn't a bad outing," commented Giants manager Bruce Bochy on Lincecum. "A play here or there and it's a different ballgame.
The pending return of outfielder Angel Pagan could help get Bochy's club rolling. Pagan has missed four straight games with lower back stiffness, but could play tonight.
Pagan is hitting .307 on the year.
Aaron Hill drove in two runs for the Diamondbacks and Paul Goldschmidt had a pair of hits and scored twice to help Arizona win for only the third time in 10 games.
Starter Josh Collmenter earned the win after conceding just one run on four hits and four walks with four strikeouts across five innings.
Arizona right-hander Brandon McCarthy tries to secure the series victory tonight as well as his first win since May 3. He sits at just 1-9 on the year with a 5.18 ERA.
McCarthy had lost three consecutive starts before logging a quality outing in a no-decision versus Milwaukee on Monday. He pitched seven innings and gave up three runs on seven hits and a walk.
The 30-year-old is 1-0 with a 4.35 ERA in three career starts against the Giants, including a no-decision on March 31 in Arizona where he allowed five runs over 6 2/3 innings.
The D-backs and Giants have split eight meetings this season.
