National League Game Summary - Washington at Philadelphia
(Sunday, July 13)
Final Score: Washington 10, Philadelphia 3
Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jayson Werth's three-run homer helped lift the Washington Nationals to a 10-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday in the rubber match of a three-game set.
Werth finished with four RBI, Ryan Zimmerman homered and drove in two runs and Ian Desmond's two-run double helped fuel a four-run sixth inning for the Nationals, who won the final two games of the series.
Tanner Roark (8-6) tossed a solid seven innings, surrendering just four hits and one run with no walks and six strikeouts to earn the win.
Cody Asche doubled twice and drove in a run for Philadelphia, which was outscored 15-6 in its final two contests before the All-Star break.
Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick (4-9) was reached for five runs on five hits in 5 2/3 frames.
"He's experimented with some things," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg on Kendrick. "He seems at times to get away from his fastball early and go to secondary pitches."
Denard Span and Anthony Rendon opened the game with singles to put runners on the corners. Werth stroked an 0-1 slider to left for an early 3-0 lead.
"Momentum for us early with Jayson hitting the homer," said Washington manager Matt Williams. "It set the tone really well for Tanner too."
Asche got aboard with a leadoff double in the fifth, but was left stranded after Roark struck out Cameron Rupp, Ben Revere and Kendrick.
The Nationals added four runs in the sixth. Zimmerman's sacrifice fly in the sixth ended Kendrick's outing. Bryce Harper greeted Mario Hollands with a single and Desmond's double to center brought in two runs. Jose Lobaton's RBI single to left made it a 7-0 game.
Ryan Howard's RBI groundout got the Phillies on the board in the home half.
Washington added runs in the final two frames. Zimmerman's solo shot to left- center field led off Justin De Fratus in the eighth made it 8-1.
With one out in the ninth, Rendon's fly ball to center landed in for a run- scoring double. Werth followed with an RBI single.
Philadelphia tacked on two runs in the home half to account for the final score. Asche scored Cesar Hernandez with a double into left and Rupp's groundout brought Howard home from third.
