American League Game Summary - Detroit at Cleveland
(Monday, May 19th)
Final Score: Cleveland 5, Detroit 4 (10 innings)
Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Brantley belted a game-winning home run with two outs in the 10th inning and the Cleveland Indians snapped Detroit's 11-game road win streak with a 5-4 triumph over the Tigers on Monday at Progressive Field.
Detroit pinch-hitter J.D. Martinez tied the game with a one-out solo shot off Cody Allen in the ninth, but Brantley laced a 3-2 pitch from Al Alburquerque (1-1) over the right-field wall in the 10th to send Cleveland to victory.
"The way it ended was great," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. "Brantley's been so big for us."
Jesus Aguilar picked up his first major league hit with an RBI single in the fifth and stroked a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the seventh for the Indians, who had lost four straight before claiming the opener of this three-game set.
Scott Atchison (1-0) secured the win after spinning a perfect top of the 10th.
Rajai Davis drove in two runs, Miguel Cabrera collected three hits, and Victor Martinez smashed his 11th homer of the season for the Tigers, who had won six straight overall.
Detroit, which was coming off a three-game road sweep of the Red Sox, didn't get to Progressive Field until late Monday afternoon after mechanical problems with the team plane forced the Tigers to stay in Boston for an extra night.
Detroit starter Drew Smyly, the only Tiger who didn't have to deal with the travel issues, had a shaky first frame. Asdrubal Cabrera ripped a one-out single before Ryan Raburn and Carlos Santana worked consecutive two-out walks to load the bases.
After a brief meeting on the mound, Smyly uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Cabrera to race home for a 1-0 lead.
"He didn't have great command tonight," Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said of Smyly. "He was off a little bit mechanically."
Victor Martinez tied the game with a leadoff homer in the second, but the Indians scored twice in the fifth to regain the lead.
Raburn ripped a one-out single and Yan Gomes worked a two-out walk before Nick Swisher singled to center to score Raburn. Aguilar then legged out an infield single for his first big league hit, which plated Gomes for a 3-1 lead.
Detroit responded in the seventh, as Nick Castellanos stroked a leadoff single and Alex Avila doubled before Davis followed two batters later with a double to center to score both runners and tie the game.
In the home half, Gomes singled and Swisher followed with a line drive to left. Gomes reached third on the play, but Swisher was thrown out at second trying to stretch his single into a double.
Aguilar followed with a sac fly to center for a 4-3 lead.
Brantley has hit safely in 16 straight home games ... Cleveland finished 3- for-13 with runners in scoring position and left 14 men on base ... Detroit went 1-for-8 with RISP and stranded seven baserunners ... Smyly allowed three runs on seven hits and five walks over five frames ... Cleveland starter Corey Kluber struck out eight and gave up three runs on eight hits over seven-plus innings.
