Martinez leads Tigers past Twins

Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Victor Martinez smacked a two-run homer and posted four RBI as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Minnesota Twins, 13-4, in the finale of a four-game set.

Torii Hunter went 2-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored, Ian Kinsler also had two hits with an RBI and three runs scored and Rajai Davis cracked a two- run shot among his two hits and two runs scored for Detroit, which won the final two games of the series.

Max Scherzer (15-4) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings to notch the win.

"They really battled me, they grind out AB's," Scherzer said of the Twins.

Kyle Gibson (11-10) surrendered five runs on eight hits and four walks over 4 2/3 frames for the Twins.

"It was not his day ... it's a work in progress," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said of Gibson.

The game was tied 3-3 before the Tigers plated two runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings and four more in the eighth to surge ahead.

Kinsler singled and Hunter was hit by a pitch before Kinsler scored on a Martinez base hit. A wild pitch advanced Hunter to third and he later came home after Alex Avila grounded into a fielder's choice.

Kinsler walked with one out in the sixth, stole second and Martinez cracked his two-run blast to left later in the inning to give the Tigers a 7-3 advantage.

Don Kelly coaxed a free pass to lead off the seventh before Davis followed by launching his two-run shot into the seats to left.

The Twins pushed a run across in the seventh via a Kurt Suzuki RBI groundout. Eugenio Suarez had an RBI single and Hunter cleared the bases with a triple to right in the eighth to make it 13-4.

Earlier, Detroit opened the scoring with three runs in the third before Minnesota answered back with a three-run home half.

RBI singles by Kinsler and Hunter highlighted the top of the third, while a two-run double by Danny Santana and run-scoring base hit by Brian Dozier accounted for the Twins' scoring in the bottom half.
