Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
With the excitement of the Super Bowl and now the opening of spring training, you might not have been playing close attention to what's going on in the NHL.
Let me give you a quick review of the past 30 days performances...from a fantasy point of view.
Sidney Crosby (ADP 2) continues to sit from the concussion he suffered in early January. He's beginning to look like Justin Morneau.
Alex Ovechkin (ADP 1) has been mediocre by Ovechkin's standards. He's scored just six goals and dished out five assists. At least he's got a solid +/- rating at plus-seven, and as always leads the league in shots over the 30-day span with 56.
Rising superstar Steven Stamkos (ADP 3) is barely in the top-30 with seven goals, six assists, a plus-two rating, but just 28 shots and three power play points.
In fact, of the top-10 preseason selections, only Daniel Sedin is ranked in the top-five over the past 30 days with two goals, 13 assists, a plus-five rating, seven power play points and 46 shots.
Let's look at who IS performing like a star.
How about Michael Grabner (ADP 213), right winger for the New York Islanders, who has 14 goals and five assists over the past 30 days. Throw in a plus-13 rating and 53 shots on goal and you have a great performance. Apparently many of you haven't been doing your due diligence, because Grabner is owned in less than 45 percent of all leagues.
Jarome Iginla (ADP 27) and Sedin (ADP 9) are ranked No.2 and No.3, respectively.
The No.4 spot belongs to Mikael Samuelsson (ADP 145), who is still owned in only 69 percent of all leagues. He's been solid with seven goals, seven assists, a plus-five rating, six power play points and 46 shots.
The No.5 spot belongs to our first goaltender - Minnesota's Niklas Backstrom. Backstrom owns five wins, a minuscule goals against average of 1.42, a save percentage of .957 and two shutouts to edge out the Kings' Jonathan Quick and the Sharks' Antti Niemi as the best goaltender over the past 30 days.
But it's Niemi, with seven wins, a GAA of 1.98, a save percentage of .934 which might be of value to fantasy owners because he is a free agent in three out of 10 leagues.
Okay fantasy owners, it's time to get out of your Super Bowl funk and get to work.
