Description: Angels right-hander Garrett Richards pitched six good innings on Thursday, allowing just one run on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Insight: That was good enough for Richards to get his second win of the season. The Angels bullpen yielded three runs in the final three innings, but Houston Street finally shut the door for the Angels to win, 6-5. Richards is 2-1 with 3.00 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 18 innings this season.
Description: Angels closer Huston Street picked up his league-leading seventh save of season on Saturday against the Rangers.
Insight: Street allowed a hit, but no other bases runners versus Texas. In seven appearances, Street is 7-for-7 in save chances and hasn't give up a run. He also has a 0.57 WHIP, eight strikeouts and two walks.
Description: Pirates closer Mark Melancon looks a bit more like himself as he picked up his fifth save of the season on Saturday versus the Diamondbacks.
Insight: Melancon's velocity is still down, but he has picked up three straight saves since his blown save on Tuesday. He did allow a hit and a walk in the ninth on Saturday, but a caught stealing help Melancon hold the one-run lead. The numbers still look bad, 5.79 ERA and 1.50 WHIP, but hopefully the worse is behind him.
Description: Tigers closer Joe Nathan left his minor-league rehab appearance at Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday in pain after throwing just 10 pitches according to MLive.com.
Insight: Nathan was seen holding his elbow, which is the same elbow he injured on Opening Day. Nathan is recovering from a strained flexor tendon and wasn't able to throw his scheduled 25 pitches. This should keep Joakim Soria fantasy relevant for a bit while longer.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Chase Anderson pitched seven solid innings versus the Rangers on Tuesday, but the Arizona bullpen blew up in the, 7-1, loss.
Insight: Anderson allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks. In the final two innings, the Arizona bullpen allowed six runs, five of which were earned. Anderson still doesn't have a decision this season and has posted a 3.00 ERA in three starts.
Description: Pirates closer Mark Melancon is off to a less than desirable start and blew a save on Tuesday versus the Cubs.
Insight: Melancon and Pittsburgh had a three-run lead in the ninth, but he allowed three hits and a walk before recording an out as the lead disappeared. Melancon forced a chopping ground ball twice, but the first time it bounced over third baseman Josh Harrison's head to score two runs and the second one was too slow to turn a double play, which let the game-winning run score. Melancon is 0-1 with a 8.53 ERA in seven appearances this season.
Description: Tigers reliever Joakim Soria could move back into his eighth inning role by the weekend as closer Joe Nathan is expected to return to the team after one rehab start on Wednesday according to MLive.com.
Insight: This is not what fantasy owners or even Tigers fans want to hear. Soria has been great, converting 5-out-of-5 save chances since Nathan hit the disabled list with his strained elbow. Owners, however, should not drop Soria right away as even if Nathan returns to the ninth inning role, Nathan is just a couple blown saves away from losing the job to Soria.
Description: Tigers closer Joe Nathan is scheduled to make a rehab appearance on Wednesday with Triple-A Toledo according to MLive.com.
Insight: Nathan is expected to rejoin the major league club as long as everything goes well Wednesday. Manager Brad Ausmus insists that Nathan will resume the closers role with the Tigers even though Joakim Soria is 5-for-5 in save opportuntities since Nathan went down with his injury.
That is an elbow injury, so cannot be good news. Joakim Soria will likely fill in while Nathan is sidelined.
Description: Royals relief pitcher Kelvin Herrera has been suspended for five games after throwing at Brett Lawrie Sunday. Update: Herrera will appeal the suspension and can keep pitching until there is a decision on his appeal.
Insight: Herrera is another of the Royals' hard-throwing bullpen who averages a strikeout-per-inning, but he's only valuable to fantasy owners in leagues that accrue holds.
Description: Oakland starter Jesse Hahn is questionable for Thursday's scheduled start against the LA Angels due to a blister on the right middle finger.
Insight: Hahn has pitched well through his first three starts with a 1-1 record, 2.12 ERA and 0.941 WHIP, but he's only amassed five strikeouts in 17 innings and last season he was close to a strikeout-per-inning pitcher. Fantasy owners want that guy back.
