Boston Red Sox Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Jon Lester, SPHot7/29/2014 11:06:00 PM
Description: Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester has officially been scratched from Wednesday's start due to ongoing trade discussions, according to Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com. Brandon Workman will start in his place.
Insight: Rob Bradford of WEEI reports that Lester could be traded as soon as Tuesday night. Lester (10-7, 2.52 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 149 Ks) has picked a great time to have his best season, as the 30-year-old will be a free agent at season's end. Even if he's traded before the deadline he's made it known he's willing to rejoin the Red Sox.
Xander Bogaerts, 3B7/29/2014 10:58:00 PM
Description: Red Sox third baseman Xander Bogaerts went 2-for-4 with a solo homer Tuesday.
Insight: In his last 29 games of the first half, Bogaerts batted .103 (11-for-107) with one extra-base hit, five RBI and seven runs, but he's managed to go 11-for-37 (.297) with two home runs since the break.
Jon Lester, SPHot7/29/2014 8:11:00 PM
Description: Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester is expected to be scratched from Wednesday's start due to ongoing trade discussions, according to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.
Insight: Lester (10-7, 2.52 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 149 Ks) has picked a great time to have his best season, as the 30-year-old will be a free agent at season's end. Even if he's traded before the deadline he's made it known he's willing to rejoin the Red Sox.
Mike Napoli, 1B7/29/2014 4:42:00 PM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against Toronto.
Insight: It will be his second absence in three games and it appears to be a swollen finger. He's batting .272 with 12 HR and 36 RBI.
Shane Victorino, RF7/29/2014 4:25:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino will sit Tuesday with Brock Holt covering right field and Stephen Drew at shortstop.
Insight: Victorino is batting .273 in 29 games this season, he just can't seem to stay on the field.
Mike Napoli, 1B7/29/2014 4:15:00 PM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against Toronto.
Insight: No injury that we know of, but it will be his second absence in three games. He's batting .272 with 12 HR and 36 RBI.
Clay Buchholz, SPCold7/28/2014 10:31:00 PM
Description: Since he struck out 12 in a three-hit shutout on July 13, Boston starter Clay Buchholz has given up 23 hits, eight walks and 15 earned runs in his last 17 innings. The Blue Jays had seven hits, four walks and seven runs against him in five innings Monday night.
Insight: Buchholz posted a 23/1 K/BB, a 2.73 ERA and a 0.71 WHIP in his first 29 2/3 innings after returning from the disabled list, but his struggles from earlier this season have returned. He's 5-7 with a 5.87 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP in 96 2/3 innings.
Allen Webster, SP7/28/2014 8:31:00 PM
Description: Allen Webster will make another start for the Red Sox Saturday against the Yankees, according to mlb.com.
Insight: Webster allowed two runs on three hits, struck out four and walked five over 5 1/3 innings Sunday at Tampa Bay to win in his first start of the season. He had a 3.10 ERA and 100 Ks in 122 innings for Triple-A Pawtucket before his call-up and is one of Boston's top pitching prospects.
David Ortiz, DHHot7/28/2014 9:51:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is 5-for-15 with two doubles and two home runs versus Blue Jays starter R.A. Dickey.
Insight: Ortiz has been on fire with five home runs and seven extra-base hits in his last seven games. The only one hotter is Cleveland's Carlos Santana (six homers in six games).
David Ortiz, DHHot7/27/2014 5:11:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz went 1-for-3 with a homer and three RBI Sunday at Tampa Bay.
Insight: Ortiz was one of the top performers for the fantasy week from July 21-27. He hit .285 with five home runs and 12 RBI in seven games.
Shane Victorino, RF7/26/2014 4:10:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino will sit Saturday with Brock Holt covering right field and Stephen Drew at shortstop.
Insight: Victorino has a six-game hitting streak, but has played the last four games and the Red Sox don't want to overwork him.
Jake Peavy, SP7/26/2014 12:18:00 PM
Description: Red Sox RHP Jake Peavy has reportedly been traded to San Francisco.
Insight: Peavy is just 1-9 this season with a 4.72 ERA and 1.427 WHIP. Perhaps the Giants hope his return to the NL will spark a revival. He has a career record of 14-2 with a 2.21 ERA and 0.962 WHIP versus the division rival Dodgers.
David Ortiz, DH7/26/2014 11:14:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is a career .375 hitter (9-for-24) with three home runs against Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson.
Insight: Ortiz left Wednesday's game with back spasms, sat out Thursday, but returned Friday night. His favorable matchup along with four homers in the past six games makes him a must start.
Shane Victorino, RF7/25/2014 10:38:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino has hit safely in all six games since he came off the disabled list.
Insight: Victorino went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI Friday at Tampa Bay and is 10-for-23 since he returned from the DL. He's been limited to 114 at-bats this season by injuries.
David Ortiz, DH7/25/2014 5:21:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz (back) is in the lineup Friday.
Insight: Ortiz left Wednesday's game with back spasms and sat out Thursday. One day off apparently was all he needed.
Daniel Nava, OF/1B7/25/2014 10:40:00 AM
Description: Boston outfielder Daniel Nava is just 2-for-20 (.100) against Tampa Bay starter David Price.
Insight: Nava has been playing every day in July and is batting .383 in 15 games, but this matchup should be avoided.
Stephen Drew, SSCold7/25/2014 10:36:00 AM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew is 0-for-10 against Rays ace David Price.
Insight: Drew has done little to excite fantasy owners batting .170 in 34 games and has had no success versus Friday's starter. Stay away.
David Ortiz, DH7/24/2014 4:23:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz appeared to injury his back on a swing in the ninth inning.
Insight: It's been called back spasms, according to Alex Speier at WEEI.com. Ortiz had driven in eight runs during the first three games of Boston's four-game set against the Blue Jays, but went 0-for-3 in the finale. Ortiz has 24 homers and 72 RBI this year, though he's batting only .250 with 40 runs.
David Ortiz, DH7/24/2014 4:02:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz appeared to injury his back on a swing in the ninth inning.
Insight: Ortiz had driven in eight runs during the first three games of Boston's four-game set against the Blue Jays, but went 0-for-3 in the finale. Ortiz has 24 homers and 72 RBI this year, though he's batting only .250 with 40 runs.
Dustin Pedroia, 2BCold7/24/2014 10:36:00 AM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia is not in Thursday afternoon's starting lineup.
Insight: Pedroia has just one hit over the past five games (20 AB) so we like him getting a day off. Being a .269 hitter with four homers, 37 RBI and 50 runs is well below expectations for the former AL MVP.
David Ortiz, DHHot7/23/2014 9:56:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz hit one out of the park for the fourth time in his last three games Wednesday at Toronto.
Insight: Ortiz has driven in eight runs during the first three games of Boston's four-game set against the Blue Jays, but the Red Sox lost two of them. Ortiz now has 24 homers and 72 RBI this year, though he's batting only .253 with 40 runs.
Dustin Pedroia, 2BCold7/23/2014 12:26:00 PM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia doesn't have good numbers against Toronto's R.A. Dickey.
Insight: Pedroia is 2-for-15 (.133) against Dickey. He's also batting .150 (6-for-40) with one extra-base hit over his last 10 games and has collected just three extra-base hits and zero home runs in his last 27 contests.
Stephen Drew, SS7/22/2014 10:20:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew went deep for the second straight game Tuesday at Toronto.
Insight: Drew has gone 8-for-21 (.381) over his last six games after starting out the season 11-for-86 (.128).
David Ortiz, DH7/22/2014 10:19:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz homered for the third time in his last two games Tuesday at Toronto.
Insight: Ortiz has belted 23 homers and driven in 69 runs to make up for a disappointing .253 average and 39 runs this season.
Shane Victorino, RF7/22/2014 3:18:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino will return to the lineup Tuesday night with Brock Holt manning center field.
Insight: Victorino (.255, 1 HR, 10 RBI) played a couple of games over the weekend in his return from the disabled list, but sat out Monday's game.
Dustin Pedroia, 2BCold7/22/2014 10:11:00 AM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia is just 6-for-36 with a lone double over his last nine games and hitless in the past three contests.
Insight: The "Laser Show" hasn't done much over the first half of the season and fantasy owners are likely growing concerned. Contrary to his career numbers, Pedroia has been better on the road than in Fenway this season.
Stephen Drew, SS7/21/2014 10:21:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI Monday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: Drew has picked up seven hits in his last 17 at-bats to lift his batting average to .175 on the season.
Mike Napoli, 1BHot7/21/2014 10:20:00 PM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli has gone 7-for-12 with two homers in his last three games.
Insight: He's raised his average from. 266 to .280 in that span. He was 3-for-5 with a double, a homer and three runs Monday against the Blue Jays.
David Ortiz, DH7/21/2014 10:18:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz went deep twice and drove in four runs Monday at Toronto.
Insight: Ortiz' .251 average and .839 OPS are below expectations, but he's on pace for 36 homers and 111 RBI.
John Lackey, SP7/21/2014 10:16:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter John Lackey (11-6) permitted just two hits and one run over seven innings Monday at Toronto.
Insight: Lackey's ERA climbed from 2.96 to 3.84 after he allowed 16 earned runs in 14 innings from June 23 to July 5, but he's lowered it back to 3.66 after two straight quality starts.
Jon Lester, SPHot7/20/2014 5:09:00 PM
Description: Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester dominated the Royals Sunday for his 10th win of the year.
Insight: Lester struck out eight and gave up four hits over eight scoreless frames. The left-hander has a career-low 2.50 ERA and his 9.33 K/9 is his best since 2010. He's allowed one earned run on 21 hits while recording a 33/4 K/BB in his last 31 innings.
Shane Victorino, RF7/19/2014 6:40:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino will make his return from the disabled list Saturday.
Insight: Victorino (.242, 1 HR, 10 RBI) has played just 21 games this season. He'll bat sixth and play right field.
Xander Bogaerts, 3B 7/18/2014 10:57:00 PM
Description: Red Sox third baseman Xander Bogaerts went 1-for-3 with a homer, two RBI, a walk and two runs scored Friday against the Royals.
Insight: In his last 29 games of the first half, Bogaerts batted .103 (11-for-107) with one extra-base hit, five RBI and seven runs. Before that stretch he had a .299 average, five home runs and an .840 OPS on the season.
David Ortiz, DH7/18/2014 12:00:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is a career .316 hitter with three homers and 16 RBI (18-for-57) versus Royals starter James Shields.
Insight: Ortiz has been a .300 hitter for the past three seasons, but is batting just .255 this season. The good news is the low average hasn't effected his power numbers.
Shane Victorino, RF7/17/2014 4:28:00 PM
Description: According to Alex Speier of WEEI, Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino will resume his rehab assignment Thursday night.
Insight: Victorino (.242, 1 HR, 10 RBI) began experiencing back soreness in June while rehabbing from a hamstring injury and he's had to stop his rehab assignment twice. He's played just 21 games this season.
Brock Holt, IF/OFHot7/13/2014 5:46:00 PM
Description: Boston utilityman Brock Holt went 5-for-6 with a homer and two runs Sunday at Houston.
Insight: Holt played second base for the first time this season on Sunday and now has played every position except pitcher and catcher in 2014. He's batted .327 with 25 extra-base hits (3 HR), 21 RBI, 37 runs, six steals and an .834 OPS in 257 at-bats.
Clay Buchholz, SPHot7/13/2014 5:42:00 PM
Description: Boston right-hander Clay Buchholz threw his seventh career complete game and fifth career shutout Sunday at Houston.
Insight: Buchholz (4-5, 5.42 ERA, 1.51 WHIP) struck out 12, walked none and allowed just three hits. He appears to have figured out what was wrong with him earlier this season while he was on the disabled list. The right-hander has posted a 23/1 K/BB, a 2.73 ERA and a 0.71 WHIP in 29 2/3 innings since he returned.
David Ortiz, DH7/12/2014 7:20:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz hit his 20th home run of the season Saturday afternoon off Brett Oberholtzer.
Insight: Ortiz's struggles at the plate continue with a batting average (.258) significantly down from past seasons, but he is still hitting for power (20 HR, 62 RBI).
Mike Napoli, 1B7/11/2014 10:22:00 AM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli is a career .414 hitter (12-for-29) with two home runs versus Houston starter Scott Feldman.
Insight: Like most of the Red Sox lineup, Napoli isn't hitting at the moment batting .220 over the past 12 games. He's hitting .265 with 10 homers, 34 RBI and an .822 OPS this season.
Jon Lester, SPHot7/10/2014 10:14:00 AM
Description: Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester pitched like an ace again Thursday, but didn't get the win because his bullpen let him down.
Insight: Lester went seven innings and gave up one run on seven hits while striking out 12. His ERA as down to 2.65 which should normally amount to a better record than 9-7. I blame the offense more than the bullpen as three of his losses have come when he's yielded two runs or less.
A.J. Pierzynski, C7/9/2014 3:00:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have designated catcher A.J. Pierzynski for assignment.
Insight: Pierzynski has hit .254 with just four homers, 31 RBI and a .634 OPS after hitting .272 with 17 homers, 70 RBI and a .722 OPS a season ago with the Rangers. The Red Sox have called up prospect Christian Vazquez from Triple-A. Vazquez has hit .279 with three homers, 20 RBI and a .721 OPS in 66 games this season and isn't likely to offer much fantasy value.
Rubby De La Rosa, SP 7/8/2014 10:57:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have recalled Rubby De La Rosa from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Insight: De La Rosa had a 2.51 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP and a 30/8 K/BB in 32 1/3 innings earlier this season, but the team sent him down when Clay Buchholz returned from the disabled list. The Red Sox had a rainout and doubleheader over the weekend, so they need a spot start from De La Rosa. With Jake Peavy on the trade block and John Lackey also a potential trade chip, De La Rosa should have a permanent spot in Boston's rotation later this season.
Shane Victorino, RF7/8/2014 7:24:00 PM
Description: According to Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal, Red Sox manager John Farrell said the team has had to pull Shane Victorino away from his rehab assignment again due to "increased symptoms" in his back.
Insight: Victorino (.242, 1 HR, 10 RBI) began experiencing back soreness in June while rehabbing from a hamstring injury and he's had to stop his rehab assignment twice. Farrell said the earliest Victorino will resume his assignment is Thursday. He's played just 21 games this season.
A.J. Pierzynski, C7/6/2014 10:14:00 AM
Description: Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski is not in Sunday's starting lineup against Baltimore.
Insight: Pierzynski has been struggling mightily at the plate batting .253 on the season and lost a modest five-game hitting streak going 0-for-4 on Saturday.
David Ortiz, DH7/5/2014 7:02:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is back in Saturday's starting lineup for Game 2.
Insight: Ortiz's struggles at the plate continue with a batting average (.252) is significantly down from past seasons. He is still hitting for power (19 HR).
Jon Lester, SP7/5/2014 11:22:00 AM
Description: Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester has been hot recently and takes the mound against his favorite opponent -- the Orioles -- Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park.
Insight: Over his previous three starts, Lester is 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA and 0.82 WHIP to go along with 16 strikeouts and five walks. Overall, his career winning percentage against Baltimore is tops among all his American League foes. In 26 starts against the O's, he owns a 2.92 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and has struck out 139 batters in 163.1 innings.
David Ortiz, DH7/5/2014 10:25:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is not in Saturday's starting lineup.
Insight: Ortiz's struggles at the plate continue with a batting average (.252) is significantly down from past seasons. He is still hitting for power (19 HR).
Jon Lester, SPHot7/5/2014 5:14:00 AM
Description: He didn't get the win, but Boston left-hander Jon Lester pitched well against Baltimore Saturday afternoon.
Insight: Over his previous five starts, Lester has a 0.95 ERA and 0.849 WHIP. He didn't get the win today, but he's helped your ERA, WHIP and strikeout totals.
Xander Bogaerts, 3BCold7/3/2014 12:44:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox are not considering a demotion for third baseman Xander Bogaerts, according to the Boston Herald. "Oh, we haven’t even considered that," manager John Farrell said Wednesday.
Insight: Bogaerts has zero hits in his last 21 at-bats, two in his last 46 (.043) and six in his last 77 (.078). He was hitting .299 with an .840 OPS on June 7, but he's down to .242 with a .688 OPS after going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Wednesday night.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B7/1/2014 10:50:00 PM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia has collected three hits in three of his last four games.
Insight: All nine hits were singles, however. Pedroia (.277) does have 23 doubles this year, but he's hit just four homers and hasn't had an extra-base hit in his last 11 games. He's also swiped just two bases on seven attempts. If someone wants to pay for his name rather than his production in a trade, go for it.
Clay Buchholz, SP7/1/2014 10:45:00 PM
Description: Boston right-hander Clay Buchholz gave up one run on five hits and didn't walk a batter in 6 1/3 innings Tuesday against the Cubs.
Insight: In his first start back from the knee injury that kept him out for a month, Buchholz went 7 1/3 innings and allowed four runs at Seattle, but he also gave up three home runs. Tuesday's start was much more encouraging, but we still don't recommend owning the 29-year-old outside of deep AL-only leagues.
Shane Victorino, RF7/1/2014 9:21:00 PM
Description: According to mlb.com, Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino (hamstring, back) could resume his rehab assignment next week.
Insight: Victorino (.242, 1 HR, 10 RBI) began experiencing back soreness in June while rehabbing from a hamstring injury. He's played just 21 games this season.
David Ortiz, DH7/1/2014 10:02:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is 9-for-20 (.450) with two homers and eight RBI versus Cubs starter Edwin Jackson.
Insight: Ortiz's batting average (.250) is significantly down from past seasons, though he is still hitter for power (19 HR). This matchup may help on both fronts.
A.J. Pierzynski, C6/30/2014 3:16:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski is not in Monday's starting lineup against Jake Arrieta and the Cubs.
Insight: Pierzynski has been struggling mightily at the plate batting .249 on the season, but just .118 over the past two weeks. Unfortunately, he did have a very good history against Arrieta, going 4-for-5 with two home runs in their matchups.
Mookie Betts, 2B6/30/2014 3:14:00 PM
Description: Boston's Mookie Betts went 1-for-3 in his major league debut on Sunday night and will get another start Monday.
Insight: Betts hit .345 with eight homers, 29 steals and a 33/51 K/BB over 77 games in the minors this season (23 with Triple-A Pawtucket). Betts is really an infielder, but the Red Sox have been working him out in outfield due to the lack of production they've gotten from the outfield this season.
Xander Bogaerts, 3BCold6/29/2014 4:22:00 PM
Description: Boston third baseman Xander Bogaerts is not in the lineup Sunday against the Yankees.
Insight: Brock Holt is starting at third base and prospect Mookie Betts will make his major league debut as the right fielder. Bogaerts has hit .091 (6-for-66) over his last 18 games.
Mike Napoli, 1BHot6/28/2014 10:28:00 PM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli hit a go-ahead opposite field solo homer off Masahiro Tanaka in the top of the ninth inning Saturday night.
Insight: Napoli has homered four times in his past nine games and walked five times in his last six. He's hitting .275 with 10 homers, 31 RBI and an .850 OPS this season.
Jon Lester, SPHot6/28/2014 10:02:00 PM
Description: Red Sox lefty Jon Lester outdueled Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka Saturday night.
Insight: Lester allowed one run (zero earned) on five hits and struck out six in eight innings to improve to 9-7. He threw his last pitch with the score tied at one, but Mike Napoli went yard in the top of the ninth to make a winner out of the left-hander. Lester has a 2.92 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP and a 2.29 BB/9, all career lows, and his 9.08 K/9 is his best since 2010.
Mookie Betts, 2B6/28/2014 8:40:00 PM
Description: Boston prospect Mookie Betts did not start Saturday against the Yankees after being called up, but he could see regular playing time.
Insight: Betts has hit .345 with eight homers, 29 steals and a 33/51 K/BB over 77 games in the minors this season (23 with Triple-A Pawtucket). Boston has had some of the worst production in the majors from its center and right fielders this season and Shane Victorino's back injury hasn't improved. Betts is an infielder, but the Red Sox have been working him out in right field.
Shane Victorino, RF6/25/2014 8:23:00 PM
Description: Shane Victorino's rehab assignment has been shut down indefinitely. This time he's dealing with a back issue. SOURCE: Scott Lauber, Boston Herald
Insight: Victorino (.242, 1 HR, 10 RBI) just can't seem to catch a break. There's no timetable for his return and at this point we wouldn't expect to see him back until after the All-Star break.
Mike Napoli, 1B6/25/2014 6:49:00 PM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli is getting the night off Wednesday against the Mariners. SOURCE: Jamie Erdahl, NESN
Insight: The Red Sox are off Thursday so Napoli (.278, 9 HR, 30 RBI) will have two days to rest up before the team heads to New York on Friday. Brock Holt (.320, 2 HR, 17 RBI) will fill in at first base.
Chris Capuano, SPCold6/25/2014 6:46:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have designated left-hander Chris Capuano for assignment. SOURCE: Comcast Sportsnet New England
Insight: The team needed to clear a roster spot for Clay Buchholz, who was just activated from the disabled list. Capuano pitched well early in the year but was done in by an awful June (22.50 ERA in five appearances). The 35-year-old has no fantasy value.
Felix Doubront, SPCold6/24/2014 8:35:00 PM
Description: Boston left-hander Felix Doubront has officially lost his spot in the starting rotation. SOURCE: Pete Abraham, Boston Globe
Insight: He'll move to the bullpen when Brandon Workman's suspension ends later this week. Doubront (2-4, 5.19 ERA) can safely be dropped from all fantasy teams, though we doubt he was on many to begin with.
Clay Buchholz, SP6/24/2014 7:46:00 PM
Description: Boston right-hander Clay Buchholz will take the hill Wednesday against Seattle. SOURCE: MLB Network
Insight: He missed about a month with a hyperextended knee. Though Buchholz (2-4, 7.02 ERA) has struggled most of the season, he pitched very well in his last rehab outing for Triple-A Pawtucket (6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 5 K's, 2 BB).
Shane Victorino, RF6/24/2014 7:40:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino is hoping to be back in the lineup Friday against New York. SOURCE: Providence Journal
Insight: Victorino (.242, 1 HR, 10 RBI) resumed his rehab assignment Monday after missing a few days with a sore hamstring. When he comes back, the Red Sox will likely go with a starting outfield of Victorino, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Brock Holt.
Mike Napoli, 1BHot6/24/2014 9:54:00 AM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli went 2-for-3 with a double and a homer Monday at Seattle.
Insight: Napoli had terrible career numbers against Felix Hernandez prior to the game, but he had both of his hits off the right-hander and has homered in three of the past six games.
Will Middlebrooks, 3B6/23/2014 10:13:00 PM
Description: Boston third baseman Will Middlebrooks was scratched from his rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket due to swelling in the same finger he fractured back in May. SOURCE: Gordon Edes, ESPNBoston.com
Insight: There's no reason for fantasy owners to wait on Middlebrooks to get healthy. The team has Stephen Drew at shortstop, Xander Bogaerts at third, so Middlebrooks won't have regular at-bats when he returns.
Mike Napoli, 1B6/22/2014 7:37:00 PM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli hit his eighth homer of the season Sunday at Oakland.
Insight: Napoli is on pace for 17 home runs and 62 RBI after hitting 23 homers and driving in 92 runs last year. He no longer has catcher eligibility so his fantasy value isn't great in standard leagues.
Koji Uehara, RP6/22/2014 7:34:00 PM
Description: Boston closer Koji Uehara blew his first save of the season Sunday, allowing two solo homers to blow a 6-4 lead, but the Red Sox scored in the top of the 10th to get Uehara his third win of the year.
Insight: Uehara allowed seven hits and walked three during a streak of 21 straight scoreless innings, but he's given up four hits (3 HR) and three runs in his last three innings. However, he won two games in that stretch and still has a 1.30 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP this season.
Brock Holt, IF/OFHot6/21/2014 8:33:00 PM
Description: Boston outfielder Brock Holt smashed three hits in Saturday's loss to Oakland.
Insight: Holt (.329, 1 HR, 15 RBI) broke up Jesse Chavez's no-hit bid in the sixth inning. He also made an unbelievable diving catch in right field to rob Alberto Callaspo of a base hit. Holt is now hitting .353 this month with six RBI.
Rubby De La Rosa, SPHot6/21/2014 8:28:00 PM
Description: Boston right-hander Rubby De La Rosa delivered a strong outing Saturday against Oakland.
Insight: De La Rosa (2-2, 2.51 ERA) surrendered just one run in seven innings, fanning seven to go with one walk. The 25-year-old has been brilliant, holding opponents to a .216 average in 32 1/3 innings. With De La Rosa pitching so well, the Red Sox will have a difficult decision to make when Brandon Workman (suspension) and Clay Buchholz (knee injury) are activated later this week.
Shane Victorino, RF6/20/2014 11:42:00 AM
Description: Shane Victorino's rehab assignment has been halted due to "general stiffness." SOURCE: Boston Herald
Insight: Victorino's return timetable will obviously have to be pushed back. That means more starts in right field for Brock Holt (.329, 1 HR, 15 RBI).
Felix Doubront, SP6/19/2014 9:27:00 PM
Description: Red Sox left-hander Felix Doubront (shoulder) will start Friday against the Athletics, according to Tim Britton of the Providence Journal.
Insight: Brandon Workman is serving a suspension, so Doubront will come off the DL to take his turn in the rotation. However, he may be moved to the bullpen when Workman returns.
Clay Buchholz, SPCold6/19/2014 9:26:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz's next start will be in the majors, according to Tim Britton of the Providence Journal. The date is yet to be determined.
Insight: While Buchholz is officially listed as out with a hyperextended knee, his struggles likely have more to do with him being on the disabled list. In 10 starts, Buchholz posted a 7.02 ERA, allowed 75 hits in 50 innings and struck out 39 while walking 24. Buchholz will replace either Brandon Workman or Rubby De La Rosa in the rotation.
David Ortiz, DH6/19/2014 6:41:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is out of the lineup Thursday against the Athletics.
Insight: Ortiz has terrible numbers against Athletics left-hander Scott Kazmir (10-for-48, 12 Ks) and is hitting .190 in June. A.J. Pierzynski is DHing and David Ross will catch Jake Peavy Thursday.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B6/19/2014 10:39:00 AM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia owns Oakland left-hander Scott Kazmir to the tune of a .514 batting average (18-for-35).
Insight: Pedroia is a career .300 hitter, who has been floundering around the .260-.275 mark for most of the season. Perhaps this favorable matchup will get him started.
Mike Napoli, 1B6/18/2014 4:40:00 PM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli won the game with a walkoff homer Wednesday against the Twins.
Insight: This may have been Boston's most thrilling victory of the season as David Ortiz and Napoli homered in consecutive at bats to win in the tenth. The Red Sox had managed just one hit in the previous nine innings. Napoli (.268, 7 HR, 27 RBI) doesn't have as much fantasy value now that he only plays first base.
John Lackey, SP6/18/2014 4:35:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter John Lackey threw nine scoreless frames Wednesday against Minnesota.
Insight: Boston didn't score until the tenth so Lackey (9 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 9 K's, 1 BB) had to settle for a no-decision. Lackey (7-4, 2.96 ERA) has allowed fewer than four runs in each of his last six starts.
Grady Sizemore, OF6/18/2014 4:27:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have released outfielder Grady Sizemore, officially making him a free agent.
Insight: He'll bypass the ten-day waiting period and begin looking for a new team right away. If Sizemore (.216, 2 HR, 15 RBI) couldn't cut it in Boston's mediocre outfield it's doubtful he'll have an impact anywhere else.
Brandon Workman, SP6/18/2014 4:23:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Brandon Workman lost his appeal and will begin serving his six-game suspension immediately. SOURCE: Mike Silverman, Boston Herald
Insight: Workman (1-0, 2.88 ERA) was given the ban for throwing at Rays third baseman Evan Longoria. Felix Doubront (2-4, 5.12 ERA) will start in his place Friday against Oakland.
Felix Doubront, SP6/18/2014 11:00:00 AM
Description: Red Sox left-hander Felix Doubront may be relegated to the bullpen when he returns from a shoulder injury later this week. SOURCE: RedSox.com
Insight: The emergence of Rubby De La Rosa and Brandon Workman at the back end of the rotation has complicated things. Doubront (2-4, 5.12 ERA) has only been average this season and John Farrell may be better off going with the hot hand. Clay Buchholz (hyperextended knee) is also close to making his return.
Jon Lester, SPHot6/17/2014 10:02:00 PM
Description: Red Sox lefty Jon Lester won for the eighth time Tuesday against Minnesota.
Insight: Since getting roughed up by the Tigers two starts ago, Lester has gone 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA. He's now fourth on Boston's all-time strikeout list with 1,342 K's. Lester's next start is set for Sunday against Oakland.
Jon Lester, SP6/17/2014 7:29:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Jon Lester said he would have "no hard feelings" if the team traded him this season. SOURCE: Ricky Doyle, NESN
Insight: Lester, who is pitching against the Twins on Tuesday, is in the final year of his contract. He's played his entire career in Boston and has already said he would be open to an extension if it came at the right price. Still, if the struggling Red Sox fall out of playoff contention, they could always press the reset button and trade Lester (7-7, 3.29 ERA) for prospects.
Grady Sizemore, CF6/17/2014 6:08:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have designated Grady Sizemore for assignment.
Insight: Sizemore hit .343 with two homers in his first 10 games this season after missing all of 2012 and 2013 due to injuries, but he went 28-for-150 (.187) with zero home runs in his last 42 games. Brock Holt is starting in center field for the first time Tuesday night.
A.J. Pierzynski, C6/17/2014 3:18:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski is not in Tuesday's starting lineup against Phil Hughes and the Twins.
Insight: Pierzynski is just a .167 hiiter (3-for-18 - all singles) against Hughes, so he'll sit in favor of David Ross, who is 3-for-5 with a home run in his matchups with Hughes.
David Ortiz, DH6/17/2014 10:12:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is a lifetime .360 hitter against Minnesota starter Phil Hughes, but he's lost his swing and may not be able to take advantage of this favorable matchup.
Insight: Ortiz (.246, 15 HR, 42 RBI) is struggling at the plate, batting .167 over the past four weeks with an ugly .612 OPS.
Rubby De La Rosa, SP6/16/2014 10:16:00 PM
Description: Boston starter Rubby De La Rosa gave up just one hit in seven shutout innings Monday against the Twins.
Insight: De La Rosa has pitched well since his promotion in late May, going 2-2 with a 2.84 ERA in 25 1/3 innings. Opponents have hit just .231 against him during that span. It's unknown if De La Rosa will remain with the club or get sent down when Clay Buchholz and Felix Doubront return from the disabled list later this month.
Shane Victorino, RF6/16/2014 8:41:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino (strained hamstring) is expected to return during the team's upcoming road trip. SOURCE: Alex Speier, WEEI
Insight: Victorino is currently on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket. His return will likely bump Grady Sizemore (.216, 2 HR, 15 RBI) out of the starting lineup.
Stephen Drew, SS6/15/2014 12:00:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew (oblique) is in the lineup Sunday.
Insight: Drew has one hit in 14 at bats so far and missed the last six games due to an oblique injury.
Jake Peavy, SP6/14/2014 7:51:00 PM
Description: Red Sox RHP Jake Peavy has one win in 14 starts this season, but this isn't exactly a Jeff Samardzija situation. Peavy has a 4.53 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP in 87 1/3 innings.
Insight: Peavy had his best start since April 25 Saturday against Cleveland, throwing six innings and allowing one run. He had a 3.09 ERA in his first 43 2/3 innings, but he also walked 25 batters and allowed seven homers in that span. That caught up to him in the six starts prior to Saturday as he had a 6.69 ERA in 37 2/3 innings.
Stephen Drew, SS6/14/2014 4:54:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew (oblique) remained out of the lineup Saturday.
Insight: Drew has been a waste of a signing so far, collecting just one hit in 14 at bats. He's missed the last six games.
Stephen Drew, SS6/13/2014 6:48:00 PM
Description: Friday's game against Cleveland will mark Boston shortstop Stephen Drew's fifth consecutive absence. He's been sitting out with an oblique injury. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: Drew has been a waste of a signing so far, collecting just one hit in 14 at bats. Jonathan Herrera (.246, 0 HR, 7 RBI) is getting another start at shortstop.
Daniel Nava, OF/1BHot6/12/2014 10:28:00 PM
Description: Boston outfielder Daniel Nava chipped in with three hits Thursday in a win over Cleveland.
Insight: Eight of Nava's 19 hits this season have come in the last five games. His batting average is still under .200 but it looks like the 31-year-old has finally found his stroke again.
Xander Bogaerts, 3BCold6/12/2014 6:33:00 PM
Description: Boston third baseman Xander Bogaerts has cooled off recently and will get a day off Thursday against Cleveland.
Insight: Bogaerts (.278, 5 HR, 17 RBI) is hitless in his last 16 at bats. Leadoff hitter Brock Holt (.331, 1 HR, 13 RBI) will grab the start at third base.
A.J. Pierzynski, C6/12/2014 3:27:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski won't start Thursday against Cleveland.
Insight: Pierzynski has hit well at Fenway Park this season (.337 AVG in 92 at bats) so it's a shame he isn't starting. Maybe Pierzynski is sitting because he's just 1-for-5 against tonight's starter Josh Tomlin.
David Ortiz, DH6/12/2014 12:02:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is hitless in eight at-bats against Indians right-hander Josh Tomlin.
Insight: Ortiz (.254, 14 HR, 38 RBI) is usually an everyday fantasy option, but we're waiting for him to start hitting like David Ortiz. It may not happen Thursday.
Shane Victorino, RF6/11/2014 8:16:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino will begin a rehab assignment later this weekend. SOURCE: Brian MacPherson, Providence Journal
Insight: Boston could certainly use Victorino back in the lineup. He's missed the last three weeks with a strained hamstring.
Will Middlebrooks, 3B6/11/2014 8:11:00 PM
Description: Boston third baseman Will Middlebrooks is ready to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket. SOURCE: Brian MacPherson, Providence Journal
Insight: What happens after that remains to be seen. While Middlebrooks was recovering from a broken finger, the Red Sox went ahead and signed Stephen Drew to play shortstop. That facilitated Xander Bogaerts' move to third base, the same position Middlebrooks plays. With this logjam taking place on the left side of the infield, it's unlikely Middlebrooks (.268, 3 HR, 21 RBI) will see regular at bats when he returns.
Brandon Workman, SP6/11/2014 7:58:00 PM
Description: Boston starter Brandon Workman will have his appeal heard on Friday. Workman was given a six-game suspension for throwing a pitch behind Evan Longoria two weeks ago. SOURCE: Scott Lauber, Boston Herald
Insight: It's unlikely the suspension will be wiped away completely so we'd still anticipate Workman (1-0, 2.86 ERA) missing at least one start. His next appearance is scheduled for Sunday against Cleveland.
Andres Torres, CF6/11/2014 7:52:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have signed former Giants outfielder Andres Torres to a minor league deal.
Insight: The 36-year-old will start out in Single-A Lowell but should be up with the big club soon. Torres would be an upgrade over Grady Sizemore, who has been brutal in his first season with Boston (.220, 2 HR, 14 RBI).
Dustin Pedroia, 2B 6/11/2014 10:10:00 AM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia has smacked Orioles starter Wei-Yin Chen around in his career.
Insight: Pedroia went hitless in his last three games and has a .717 OPS this season, but his history against Chen is too enticing to ignore. He's gone 12-for-24 (.500) with five doubles and a triple against the left-hander.
Jackie Bradley Jr., CFCold6/10/2014 6:51:00 PM
Description: Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. remains out of the lineup.
Insight: Bradley was benched Monday as well. Now that Boston is using Brock Holt in the outfield it may only be a matter of time before Bradley is sent back to the minors. Though he's provided excellent defense in center field, Bradley isn't much of a hitter, batting just .199 through his first 282 major league at bats.
Stephen Drew, SSCold6/10/2014 2:29:00 PM
Description: Boston shortstop Stephen Drew will sit out again with tightness in his right oblique. SOURCE: Roch Kubatko, MASN
Insight: Drew has just one hit in his first 14 at bats this season. He said he first felt the tightness during his final at bat Sunday against Detroit.
David Ortiz, DH6/10/2014 9:26:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz should find a seat on your bench in this unfavorable against Baltimore right-hander Chris Tillman.
Insight: Ortiz (.254, 14 HR, 38 RBI) is usually an everyday fantasy option, but he's just 2-for-19 (both singles) without an RBI versus Tillman.
Clay Buchholz, SPCold6/9/2014 6:02:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz will throw a rehab start Friday with Triple-A Pawtucket, according to Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal.
Insight: While Buchholz is officially listed as out with a hyperextended knee, his struggles likely have more to do with him being on the disabled list. In 10 starts, Buchholz posted a 7.02 ERA, allowed 75 hits in 50 innings and struck out 39 while walking 24. His return will bump either Brandon Workman or Rubby De La Rosa from the rotation.
Stephen Drew, SS6/9/2014 5:29:00 PM
Description: Boston shortstop Stephen Drew is 6-for-13 (.462) in his career against Baltimore starter Bud Norris, but he'll sit out with tightness in his right oblique. SOURCE: Sean McAdam, csnne.com
Insight: Drew has just one hit in his first 14 at-bats this season and will have to miss this favorable matchup against Norris. Drew said he first felt the tightness during his final at-bat Sunday night.
Stephen Drew, SS6/9/2014 10:35:00 AM
Description: Boston shortstop Stephen Drew is 6-for-13 (.462) in his career against Baltimore starter Bud Norris.
Insight: Drew has just one hit in his first 14 at-bats this season. He only got 21 at-bats in the minors before the club brought him back up and that obviously wasn't enough to get him ready. Stay away from what would normally be a favorable matchup.
Mike Napoli, 1B6/8/2014 4:36:00 PM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli has been activated from the disabled list and is back in the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against Detroit. SOURCE: Nick Cafardo, Boston Globe
Insight: Napoli (.260, 5 HR, 22 RBI) missed the minimum 15 days with a sprained ring finger. Outfielder Alex Hassan (.143, 0 HR, 0 RBI) was sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket in the corresponding roster move.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B6/8/2014 9:14:00 AM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia hit his third homer of the season and went 3-for-4 Saturday at Detroit.
Insight: Pedroia averaged 16 homers per season from 2008-12, but he's hit just 12 dingers in his last 219 games.
David Ortiz, DH6/7/2014 10:09:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is a career .471 hitter (8-for-17) with three long balls against Detroit ace Max Scherzer.
Insight: Ortiz (.262, 13 HR, 33 RBI) hasn't done much over the past two weeks, but has a favorable matchup on Saturday.
Stephen Drew, SS6/6/2014 3:48:00 PM
Description: Boston shortstop Stephen Drew is not in Friday's starting lineup against left-hander Drew Smyly and the Tigers.
Insight: Drew is hitless in his first two games. Jonathan Herrera (.231, 0 HR, 7 RBI) is making the start at shortstop.
Felix Doubront, SP6/6/2014 11:10:00 AM
Description: Boston left-hander Felix Doubront (shoulder strain) threw 43 pitches in a rehab start for Double-A Portland on Thursday. Source: Steve Silva, Boston.com.
Insight: Doubront (2-4, 5.12 ERA, 1.55 WHIP) threw 31 of his 43 pitches for strikes, punched out two and didn't walk a batter while allowing two runs on three hits over four innings. He's expected to make a few more rehab starts before the Red Sox hope he's ready to rejoin the club in late June.
Clay Buchholz, SPCold6/6/2014 11:07:00 AM
Description: The Red Sox decided against having Clay Buchholz pitch a simulated game Monday, instead opting to help the struggling right-hander work on his mechanics in a 35-pitch bullpen session Wednesday. Source: Ian Browne, MLB.com.
Insight: While Buchholz is officially listed on the DL with a hyperextended knee, the club has now made it clear they're attempting to work out the kinks that have led to the righty's miserable season. In 10 starts, Buchholz posted a 7.02 ERA, allowed 75 hits in 50 innings and struck out 39 while walking 24. The Red Sox likely will send Buchholz on a rehab assingment once he pitches the rescheduled sim game Saturday.
Xander Bogaerts, 3BHot6/3/2014 10:23:00 PM
Description: Red Sox third baseman Xander Bogaerts belted his fifth home run of the year Tuesday in a loss to Cleveland.
Insight: He's hitting .467 over his last seven games. Bogaerts (.304, 5 HR, 16 RBI, .395 OBP) has turned himself into a legitimate Rookie of the Year candidate while giving fantasy owners solid production at two positions.
Mookie Betts, 2B6/3/2014 8:29:00 PM
Description: Red Sox top prospect Mookie Betts has advanced to Triple-A Pawtucket. SOURCE: Alex Speier, WEEI
Insight: Betts was tearing up the Eastern League, batting .355 in 214 at bats for Double-A Portland. The Red Sox are hoping he can play outfield for them at some point though his primary position is second base.
Brandon Workman, SP6/3/2014 5:05:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right-hander Brandon Workman has been suspended six games by Major League Baseball for "intentionally throwing a pitch in the head area of Evan Longoria," last Friday. SOURCE: Providence Journal
Insight: Workman threw the pitch behind Longoria in the sixth inning and was ejected. Both benches were warned in the first inning when David Price plunked David Ortiz in the hip. Workman is appealing the suspension so will likely make his scheduled start on Wednesday.
Stephen Drew, SS6/3/2014 2:52:00 PM
Description: Boston shortstop Stephen Drew is not in Tuesday's starting lineup against Cleveland.
Insight: Drew was 0-for-2 with a walk in his season debut. The Red Sox signed him only two weeks ago so it may take Drew a little while to get back into playing shape. Jonathan Herrera (.208, 0 HR, 6 RBI) is making his fourth start of the year at shortstop.
Shane Victorino, RF6/2/2014 8:15:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino won't be ready to come off the DL when his 15 days are up. SOURCE: Peter Abraham, Boston Globe
Insight: His strained hamstring is still bothering him. That means more playing time in right for Grady Sizemore (.229, 2 HR, 14 RBI).
Stephen Drew, SS6/2/2014 3:20:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew is likely to be in Monday's starting lineup, but he's just 1-for-10 against Cleveland right-hander Justin Masterson and isn't a good fantasy play.
Insight: Drew hit .238 during his minor league rehab assignment. He'll serve as Boston's everyday shortstop with Xander Bogaerts (.296, 3 HR, 13 RBI) moving over to third base. Update: Drew is in Monday's starting lineup and batting eighth.
Stephen Drew, SS6/2/2014 10:18:00 AM
Description: Red Sox recently recalled shortstop Stephen Drew is likely to be in Monday's starting lineup, but he's just 1-for-10 against Cleveland right-hander Justin Masterson and isn't a good fantasy play.
Insight: Drew hit .238 during his minor league rehab assignment. He'll serve as Boston's everyday shortstop with Xander Bogaerts (.296, 3 HR, 13 RBI) moving over to third base.
Brock Holt, 3BHot6/1/2014 8:49:00 PM
Description: Red Sox corner infielder Brock Holt ripped four hits Sunday in a win against Tampa Bay.
Insight: All four were doubles, making him the first Red Sox player to double four times in a game since Victor Martinez in 2010. Holt (.337, 1 HR, 11 RBI) is quickly becoming a fan favorite and should remain in the lineup at least until Mike Napoli returns from the DL.
Jon Lester, SP6/1/2014 8:30:00 PM
Description: Boston starter Jon Lester was in the zone Sunday against Tampa Bay.
Insight: He finished with 12 punchouts in seven shutout innings. That gives Lester (6-6, 3.15 ERA) 95 K's for the season, which ties him with Corey Kluber for the league-lead. The Red Sox have followed up a ten-game losing streak by winning seven in a row.
Stephen Drew, SS6/1/2014 6:46:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have recalled shortstop Stephen Drew from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Insight: Drew hit .238 during his minor league rehab assignment. He'll serve as Boston's everyday shortstop with Xander Bogaerts (.296, 3 HR, 13 RBI) moving over to third base.
Daniel Nava, LF6/1/2014 6:39:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have decided to call up Daniel Nava just one day after sending him back down to Triple-A.
Insight: Boston is dangerously thin at first base now that Mike Napoli and Mike Carp are both on the disabled list. Though Brock Holt should get most of the playing time at first, Nava (.130, 2 HR, 3 RBI) could see a few starts here and there.
Mike Carp, 1B6/1/2014 6:25:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox haved placed first baseman Mike Carp on the 15-day DL. SOURCE: Rob Bradford, WEEI
Insight: He's been diagnosed with a broken foot. Mike Napoli is coming back in a week but for now, Brock Holt (.337, 1 HR, 11 RBI) and Daniel Nava (.130, 2 HR, 3 RBI) will have to split time at first base.
Mike Napoli, 1B6/1/2014 12:00:00 PM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli (finger) is expected to come off the disabled list next Sunday, the first day he's eligible for activation, according to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald.
Insight: Napoli dislocated his left ring finger on a head first slide into second base on April 15. He played through the injury for 29 games but hit just .238 with 30 Ks and two homers before finally going on the DL.
A.J. Pierzynski, CHot6/1/2014 11:55:00 AM
Description: Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski is out of the lineup Sunday.
Insight: Pierzynski has hit .409 (18-for-44) with five extra-base hits in his last 10 games and owns very good career numbers against Tampa Bay starter Erik Bedard, but he caught Saturday night and will get a day off Sunday.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B6/1/2014 10:28:00 AM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia (hand) is in the lineup Sunday, according to Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal.
Insight: The X-rays on Pedroia's bruised right hand were negative and his MRI revealed no structural damage. The second baseman has gone just 3-for-19 (.158) against Tampa Bay's Erik Bedard, so daily fantasy players should stay away from him Sunday.
A.J. Pierzynski, CHot6/1/2014 10:19:00 AM
Description: Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski has batted .216 against lefties this season, compared to .321 against righties, but he's had success in the past against Tampa Bay southpaw Erik Bedard.
Insight: Pierzynski is 9-for-23 with two homers against Bedard and also has hit .409 (18-for-44) with five extra-base hits in his last 10 games. He may sit out Sunday after catching Saturday night, but make sure he's in your lineup if he's playing for Boston.
Rubby De La Rosa, SP5/31/2014 10:30:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right-hander Rubby De La Rosa was phenomenal Saturday in his 2014 big league debut.
Insight: De La Rosa's fastball was consistently in the high 90s and his changeup was almost unhittable. He didn't walk a batter all night and finished with eight strikeouts. The 25-year-old could be a player to watch in fantasy if Clay Buchholz remains on the disabled list for an extended period of time.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B5/31/2014 8:11:00 PM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia doesn't have any structural damage in his bruised hand. SOURCE: Tim Britton, Providence Journal
Insight: His X-rays came back negative. Pedroia (.275, 2 HR, 17 RBI) is one of the toughest players in the league so we wouldn't expect him to miss too much time.
Brock Holt, 3B5/31/2014 4:54:00 PM
Description: Red Sox third baseman Brock Holt has been working in the outfield according to Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal.
Insight: Holt (.299, 0 HR, 7 RBI) has done a nice job in place of Will Middlebrooks and is certainly a better offensive player than slumping corner outfielder Grady Sizemore. Adding outfield eligibility would help Holt's fantasy value.
Daniel Nava, LF5/31/2014 3:40:00 PM
Description: Boston corner outfielder Daniel Nava will head to Triple-A Pawtucket to make room on the roster for Rubby De La Rosa. SOURCE: Pete Abraham, Boston Globe
Insight: It's the second time Nava (.130, 2 HR, 3 RBI) has been demoted this season. He logged just one hit in ten at bats while filling in for Shane Victorino in right field.
Rubby De La Rosa, SP5/31/2014 3:36:00 PM
Description: Rubby De La Rosa has been called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to start Saturday's game against the Rays. SOURCE: Pete Abraham, Boston Globe
Insight: De La Rosa will take Clay Buchholz's spot in the starting rotation. In ten starts for Pawtucket, De La Rosa went 2-3 with a 3.04 ERA.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B5/31/2014 3:34:00 PM
Description: Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia won't play Saturday against Tampa Bay. SOURCE: Red Sox on Twitter
Insight: Pedroia (.275, 2 HR, 17 RBI) left last night's game with a bruised hand. Jonathan Herrera (.171, 0 HR, 4 RBI) is filling in at second base.
David Ortiz, DH5/30/2014 5:31:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz was a late scratch from Thursday's lineup due to a sore right calf, but he's back in it Friday, according to Alex Speier of WEEI.com.
Insight: Calf soreness has forced Ortiz (.270, 12 HR, 30 RBI) out of the starting lineup twice since May 24.
Xander Bogaerts, SSHot5/29/2014 10:24:00 PM
Description: Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts slammed three hits in Thursday's win over Atlanta.
Insight: Bogaerts (.296, 3 HR, 12 RBI) plated a run with his single to right field in the eighth inning. The rookie has hit .313 in the month of May with two homers and seven runs batted in. His .388 on base percentage this season ranks sixth in the American League.
Brock Holt, 3B5/29/2014 10:19:00 PM
Description: Boston third baseman Brock Holt finished with three hits Thursday in a walkoff win over the Braves.
Insight: That raises his season average to .315. Holt has done a nice job filling in for Will Middlebrooks at third base the past couple weeks. Unfortunately, he'll probably be sent back to Triple-A when Stephen Drew returns to the majors next month.
Ryan Lavarnway, C/1B5/29/2014 9:06:00 PM
Description: Red Sox C/1B Ryan Lavarnway had to leave Thursday's game because of a sore wrist. SOURCE: Sean McAdam, Comcast Sportsnet New England
Insight: Daniel Nava (.132, 2 HR, 3 RBI) has come on to take his place at first base. Lavarnway grounded out in his only at bat of the night.
David Ortiz, DH5/29/2014 5:51:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz won't be in the lineup Thursday against Atlanta. SOURCE: Brian MacPherson, Providence Journal
Insight: Calf soreness has bothered Ortiz (.270, 12 HR, 30 RBI) on and off for the last week. A.J. Pierzynski (.273, 4 HR, 25 RBI) is filling in at DH with David Ross (.172, 2 HR, 5 RBI) getting the start at catcher.
A.J. Pierzynski, C5/29/2014 3:42:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski is not in Thursday's starting lineup.
Insight: The Red Sox will use David Ross to catch Jake Peavy. Pierzynski is hitting .273 with four homers, 25 RBI and a .700 OPS this year. As long as you ignore his abnormal 2012 season, Pierzynski is on pace to produce about as expected (11-16 homers and 70-75 RBI).
Mike Carp, 1B5/29/2014 10:25:00 AM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Carp missed Wednesday's game due to a sore right foot and is doubtful for Thursday's game against Atlanta.
Insight: Carp will have an MRI on his foot. He's been starting at first base with Mike Napoli on the DL but is hitting .231 with zero homers this season has no fantasy value.
John Lackey, SPHot5/28/2014 10:40:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter John Lackey didn't let up a run in 6 1/3 innings Wednesday against Atlanta.
Insight: He's 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in his last two outings. Lackey's 3.27 ERA this season is his lowest since 2007.
Xander Bogaerts, SS5/28/2014 10:34:00 PM
Description: Red Sox SS Xander Bogaerts used a three-hit game Wednesday to raise his average to .287.
Insight: He started the day at .277. Boston has followed up its ten-game losing streak by winning three straight against Atlanta. Bogaerts' .383 on base percentage is second on the team behind Mike Napoli.
Clay Buchholz, SPCold5/28/2014 7:57:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have officially placed right-hander Clay Buchholz on the 15-day DL. SOURCE: Ricky Doyle, NESN
Insight: The team is saying Buchholz (2-4, 7.02 ERA) has a hyperextended knee but we think his placement on the DL has more to due with flawed mechanics than anything. Buchholz had trouble finding his landing spot in his most recent start against the Braves and didn't seem to have any confidence in his pitches. Alex Wilson has been called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to take his place on the active roster.
Mike Carp, 1B5/28/2014 4:51:00 PM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Carp will miss Wednesday's game due to a sore right foot, according to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald
Insight: Carp is undergoing precautionary X-rays to determine the source of the swelling in his foot. He's been starting at first base with Mike Napoli on the DL but is hitting .231 with zero homers this season. Daniel Nava will start in his place Wednesday.
David Ortiz, DH5/28/2014 10:27:00 AM
Description: Boston DH David Ortiz has hit .320 with three home runs against Braves starter Gavin Floyd.
Insight: Ortiz has had major career success against every starter the Braves have thrown in this series. He'll try to finish it off on a positive note after going 2-for-7 with a homer, five RBI and two walks the last two games.
Clay Buchholz, SPCold5/27/2014 5:23:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox say that Clay Buchholz has a hyperextended knee, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe. He'll throw a bullpen session Wednesday and is questionable for Saturday's start.
Insight: Buchholz has a 7.02 ERA and a 1.98 WHIP in 50 innings this season after walking eight batters and giving up six runs in three innings Monday. Manager John Farrell was noncommittal about Buchholz' next start after the game, so it's a little convenient that the knee injury popped up Tuesday.
A.J. Pierzynski, C5/27/2014 1:44:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski is not expected to start on Tuesday, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe.
Insight: The Red Sox will use David Ross to catch Jon Lester. It doesn't hurt that Ross is 4-for-10 against Braves starter Aaron Harang. Pierzynski is hitting .267 with four homers, 24 RBI and a .692 OPS this year.
David Ortiz, DH5/27/2014 9:56:00 AM
Description: Boston DH David Ortiz is a career .556 hitter (5-for-9) with a homer, six RBI and a 1.778 OPS versus Braves starter Aaron Harang.
Insight: Ortiz is just 2-for-24 over his past seven games, but did blast a home run on Monday as the Red Sox broke their long losing streak.
Clay Buchholz, SPCold5/26/2014 7:53:00 PM
Description: Red Sox manager John Farrell was noncommittal about Clay Buchholz' next start, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
Insight: The Red Sox will discuss a plan of action for Buchholz after he walked eight batters and gave up six runs in three innings Monday. He has a 7.02 ERA and a 1.98 WHIP in 50 innings this season.
David Ortiz, DH5/26/2014 7:03:00 PM
Description: Boston DH David Ortiz hit a game-tying three-run home run off Braves starter Ervin Santana in the top of the fifth inning Monday afternoon and later drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.
Insight: Ortiz has owned Santana throughout his career. Boston came in having lost 10 straight games and was down 6-1 going into the fifth, but it scored seven unanswered runs to end the skid. Despite going 1-for-23 from May 18-25, Ortiz is still hitting .270 with 12 homers, 29 RBI and an .882 OPS.
David Ortiz, DH5/26/2014 7:14:00 AM
Description: Boston DH David Ortiz is a career .367 hitter (11-for-30) with three homers and a 1.224 OPS versus Braves starter Ervin Santana.
Insight: Ortiz has cooled off over his last six games, batting just .048 with five strikeouts. Ortiz is still batting .276 with 11 HR, 25 RBI and an .891 OPS on the season and has a favorable matchup.
Jonny Gomes, LF5/25/2014 4:47:00 PM
Description: Boston outfielder Jonny Gomes was ejected from Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. SOURCE: Tim Britton, Providence Journal
Insight: Gomes came running at Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar after Escobar stole third with Tampa Bay already leading 8-3. Gomes and Escobar were both tossed. Mike Carp has come on to play left field for the Red Sox, who are on the verge of dropping their tenth game in a row.
Mike Napoli, 1B5/25/2014 11:34:00 AM
Description: Boston has placed first baseman Mike Napoli on the 15-day DL with a sprained finger. SOURCE: Scott Lauber, Boston Herald
Insight: This has been a nightmare week for the Red Sox with nine straight losses and three players going on the disabled list (Felix Doubront, Shane Victorino and now Napoli). Mike Carp (.246, 0 HR, 5 RBI) and Daniel Nava (.145, 2 HR, 3 RBI) are likely to split time at first base during his absence. Brandon Workman was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket in the corresponding roster move.
Xander Bogaerts, SS5/25/2014 11:30:00 AM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts has returned to the starting lineup after exiting Saturday's game with a hamstring cramp. SOURCE: Darren Hartwell, NESN
Insight: Bogaerts certainly isn't a power hitter (three homers in 165 at bats) but he does get on base a lot (.370 OBP). Maybe he can help Boston snap its nine-game losing streak on Sunday.
Xander Bogaerts, SS5/24/2014 8:04:00 PM
Description: Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts exited Saturday's game with a hamstring cramp. SOURCE: Don Orsillo, NESN
Insight: He'll finish the night with two hits in five at bats. Jonathan Herrera (.184, 0 HR, 4 RBI) has come on to take his place at shortstop.
Brandon Workman, SP5/24/2014 4:27:00 PM
Description: As expected, Brandon Workman will start in place of Felix Doubront (strained shoulder) Sunday against the Rays. SOURCE: Pete Abraham, Boston Globe
Insight: That became obvious when Workman was scratched from his start Friday with Triple-A Pawtucket. Workman went 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA in three starts for Boston last season.
Daniel Nava, LF5/24/2014 3:33:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have called up outfielder Daniel Nava from Triple-A Pawtucket. SOURCE: Pete Abraham, Boston Globe
Insight: He's filling in for Shane Victorino, who just went down with a strained hamstring. Nava didn't have much success in the majors earlier this season (.149 AVG in 67 at bats) but he did hit .303 with 12 HR and 66 RBI for Boston in 2013.
Mike Napoli, 1B5/24/2014 3:28:00 PM
Description: Boston will be without first baseman Mike Napoli Saturday against Tampa Bay. SOURCE: Tim Britton, Providence Journal
Insight: It's Napoli's third absence in the last four games. Apparently Napoli's finger injury flared up and he's not expected back in the lineup until Tuesday at the earliest. That means we'll be seeing a lot of Mike Carp (.268, 0 HR, 4 RBI) at first base over the next few days.
Shane Victorino, RF5/24/2014 3:21:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino has been placed on the DL for the second time this season.
Insight: He aggravated his strained hamstring running to first base in last night's loss to Tampa Bay. Daniel Nava (.149, 2 HR, 3 RBI) has been called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to take his spot on the roster.
David Ortiz, DHCold5/24/2014 1:02:00 PM
Description: Boston DH David Ortiz is not in Saturday's starting lineup versus David Price and the Rays.
Insight: Ortiz has cooled off over his last five games, batting just .056 with four strikeouts. Keeping that in mind, maybe getting a day off against a Cy Young Award winning left-hander isn't a bad thing. Despite the slump, Ortiz is still batting .276 with 11 HR, 25 RBI and an .891 OPS.
Shane Victorino, RF5/23/2014 10:18:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino left Friday's game with tightness in his right hamstring. SOURCE: Don Orsillo, NESN
Insight: He came up limping after reaching on a fielder's choice in the ninth inning. Jonny Gomes (.242, 4 HR, 19 RBI) has come on to take his place.
Brandon Workman, SP5/23/2014 7:11:00 PM
Description: Right-hander Brandon Workman was scratched from Friday's start with Triple-A Pawtucket. SOURCE: Brian MacPherson, Providence Journal
Insight: It's a clear indication that Workman is heading to Tampa Bay where he's likely to start Sunday in place of Felix Doubront (strained shoulder). Workman made three relief appearances for the Sox earlier in the year. With Pawtucket, he's gone 3-1 with a 5.12 ERA in seven starts.
Mike Napoli, 1B5/23/2014 6:00:00 PM
Description: Red Sox 1B Mike Napoli is back after missing two games with the flu. SOURCE: Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times
Insight: It's been a tough month for Napoli (.200 AVG, no homers) and an even tougher one for the Red Sox. A loss Friday would be the team's eighth consecutive defeat. Despite their recent poor play, the Red Sox are still just four games out of the Wild Card.
Brock Holt, 3B5/23/2014 3:20:00 PM
Description: Red Sox infielders Brock Holt and Xander Bogaerts will bat at the top of the order on Friday night as the team tries something new to break up their seven-game losing streak.
Insight: Holt (.333, 0 HR, 5 RBI) normally bats near the bottom of the Red Sox order while Bogaerts has a little more experience in the No. 2 hole. If they can get on, it could be very good for their fantasy value with Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz to knock them in.
Mike Napoli, 1B5/22/2014 1:02:00 PM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli is not in Thursday's lineup due to flu-like symptoms, according to Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal.
Insight: Napoli has hit .200 with zero homers in May but owns a .389 OBP because of 17 walks. He's hoping to be back in the lineup Friday. Mike Carp (.275, 0 HR, 3 RBI) will get another start at first base on Thursday.
Felix Doubront, SP5/22/2014 10:39:00 AM
Description: Boston starter Felix Doubront will head to the disabled list with a strained left shoulder.
Insight: Doubront is just 2-4 with a 5.12 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP. He's won 11 games each of his last two seasons but the left-hander's ERA and WHIP have never been at fantasy-worthy levels.
David Ortiz, DH5/22/2014 10:04:00 AM
Description: Boston DH Davis Ortiz is 25-for-76 (.329) with four homers and 14 RBI versus Blue Jays starter Mark Buehrle.
Insight: Ortiz has cooled over the past five games, batting just .111, but this favorable matchup could get him going. Before this recent 2-for-18 run, he was the hottest hitter in baseball, going 13-for-25 with five homers.
Mike Napoli, 1B5/21/2014 5:36:00 PM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli is not in the lineup Wednesday due to flu-like symptoms.
Insight: Napoli has hit .200 with zero homers in May but reached base at a .389 clip due to 17 walks. He should be back in the lineup Thursday or Friday. Mike Carp is starting at first base Wednesday.
Felix Doubront, SP5/20/2014 10:54:00 PM
Description: Boston left-hander Felix Doubront left Tuesday's start with shoulder fatigue and will undergo an MRI Wednesday, according to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald.
Insight: Doubront gave up back-to-back doubles to start the fifth inning and exited after a visit to the mound by the trainer and manager John Farrell. He allowed five earned runs in four innings and has a 5.12 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP this season.
Felix Doubront, SP5/20/2014 9:38:00 PM
Description: Boston left-hander Felix Doubront left Tuesday's start with shoulder fatigue, according to Sean McAdam of csnne.com.
Insight: Doubront gave up back-to-back doubles to start the fifth inning and exited after a visit to the mound by the trainer and manager John Farrell. He allowed five earned runs in four innings and has a 5.12 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP this season.
Felix Doubront, SP5/20/2014 8:40:00 PM
Description: Boston left-hander Felix Doubront left Tuesday's start with an apparent injury.
Insight: Doubront gave up back-to-back doubles to start the fifth inning and exited after a visit to the mound by the trainer and manager John Farrell. He allowed five earned runs in four innings and has a 5.12 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP this season.
Stephen Drew, SS5/20/2014 5:12:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox will send Stephen Drew to the minors for 7-10 days, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
Insight: Boston just signed Drew to a one-year contract for $10 million on Tuesday. He batted .253 with 13 homers, 67 RBI, six steals, 57 runs and a .776 OPS in 124 games for the Red Sox last year.
Xander Bogaerts, SS5/20/2014 3:08:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts will start at shortstop on Tuesday night, but that might be the last time for a while as Boston just signed Stephen Drew.
Insight: Bogaerts will move to third base for the injured Will Middlebrooks. He's hitting .269 with a pair of homers, seven RBI, 17 runs and one steal. We were expecting more from last season's USA Today Minor League Player of the Year.
Stephen Drew, SS5/20/2014 2:58:00 PM
Description: Stephen Drew and the Red Sox have agreed to a one-year, $10 million deal, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.
Insight: Drew is an above average defensive player with decent power for a middle infielder. He'll likely play at shortstop with current SS Xander Bogaerts replacing the injured Will Middlebrooks at third base. Drew batted .253 with 13 HR and 67 RBI in 124 games last season for the Red Sox.
Jonny Gomes, LFCold5/20/2014 10:26:00 AM
Description: Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes should be avoided against Tuesday starter J.A. Happ.
Insight: Gomes normally hits left-handers much better than right-handers (.277 vs. .225), but he's just 1-for-12 (.083) against the Blue Jays southpaw.
Will Middlebrooks, 3B5/17/2014 4:52:00 PM
Description: Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks has a non-displaced fracture in his right index finger, according to Alex Speier of WEEI.com.
Insight: He's been placed on the disabled list and will be reevaluated in 5-7 days to determine a timetable. The third baseman was hit by a pitch last Saturday and played the last four games with the injury. Brock Holt has been called up to take his place on the roster.
Shane Victorino, RF5/17/2014 3:53:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino (knee) had an MRI Friday afternoon, but is in Saturday's lineup against Detroit.
Insight: Victorino hurt his left knee when he slid into third base during Wednesday's game and sat out Thursday and Friday.
Shane Victorino, RF5/16/2014 5:32:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino (knee) had an MRI Friday afternoon and won't play against the Tigers, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe.
Insight: Victorino hurt his left knee when he slid into third base during Wednesday's game and sat out Thursday. We're awaiting the results of his MRI.
David Ortiz, DHHot5/16/2014 9:59:00 AM
Description: Boston DH Davis Ortiz is one of the hottest hitters in baseball right now and has a favorable matchup Friday against Tigers ace Max Scherzer.
Insight: Ortiz has raised his batting average over 60 points in the past four weeks and owns a modest seven-game hitting streak in which he's batting .515 with a 1.628 OPS. The only gamble will be the weather where there is a 30 percent chance of rain at Fenway tonight.
Shane Victorino, RF5/15/2014 5:58:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino sat out Thursday's game because of a knee injury. SOURCE: Brian MacPherson, Providence Journal
Insight: Instead, Jonny Gomes (.238, 3 HR, 16 RBI) got the start in right field. Consider Victorino (.292, 0 HR, 9 RBI) questionable for tomorrow's series opener against the Tigers.
Mike Napoli, 1B5/15/2014 9:23:00 AM
Description: Boston 1B Mike Napoli is 5-for-9 (.556) with two homers and six RBI against Minnesota right-hander Phil Hughes.
Insight: Napoli (.265, 5 HR, 22 RBI) has been consistent in his year plus in Boston, batting in the .260 with an OPS averaging .843.
David Ortiz, DHHot5/14/2014 3:58:00 PM
Description: There is no one hotter anywhere in baseball than David Ortiz right now.
Insight: Ortiz has slugged four home runs in the last two games, batted .571 over the past seven days and hit .372 over the past 28 days to bring his average from .239 up to .305.
Shane Victorino, RFHot5/14/2014 11:50:00 AM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino is a safe bet to do some damage today against Twins starter Kevin Correia.
Insight: He's a .471 career hitter against the right-hander. Victorino has gone six for his last 12 to raise his average from .250 to an even .300.
David Ortiz, DHHot5/14/2014 9:22:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz blasted two homers Tuesday in a loss to Minnesota.
Insight: Ortiz (4-for-5) has absolutely crushed the Twins throughout his career, collecting a .344 average against them in 55 games. The 38-year-old is on pace for 38 homers this season. That would be Papi's most since 2006 when he led the majors with 54 round-trippers.
Jake Peavy, SP5/13/2014 6:39:00 PM
Description: Boston has flipped Jake Peavy and Felix Doubront in the starting rotation. Now Peavy will start Tuesday against Minnesota with Doubront throwing on Wednesday.
Insight: The Red Sox are loading up for this weekend's series against the Tigers. They'll have Jon Lester, John Lackey and Peavy for that series, easily their best three starters. Peavy (1-1, 3.09 ERA) has pitched well this season but he hasn't gotten much run support (3.71 runs per game).
Felix Doubront, SP5/13/2014 6:31:00 PM
Description: Boston left-hander Felix Doubront had his start pushed back to Wednesday. SOURCE: Pete Abraham, Boston Globe
Insight: Doubront (1-3, 5.09 ERA) and Jake Peavy (1-1, 3.09 ERA) are switching places so the Red Sox will only use one left-handed starter this weekend against Detroit. The Red Sox could afford to do this because they've had three off-days in the last week and a half.
Grady Sizemore, CF5/13/2014 4:20:00 PM
Description: Red Sox outfielder Grady Sizemore is back in the starting lineup for the first time since Friday, May 9.
Insight: Sizemore batted over .300 for the first two weeks of the season, but has done little since. From April 15 thru Friday he's batting just .161 with no homers and seven RBI. His return to the lineup shouldn't change any fantasy lineups.
Shane Victorino, RF5/13/2014 10:55:00 AM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino is just a career .150 hitter (6-for-40) with nine strikeouts versus Minnesota starter Ricky Nolasco.
Insight: The Flyin' Hawaiian has only played 13 games this season due to injury and should probably be avoided in this unfavorable matchup.
Will Middlebrooks, 3B5/11/2014 2:42:00 PM
Description: Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks was a late scratch from Sunday's game.
Insight: Middlebrooks was hit with a pitch on Saturday night and its still sore. This doesn't appear to be too serious. We are waiting for Middlebrooks return to his 2012 production level.
A.J. Pierzynski, C5/10/2014 4:50:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski is not in Saturday night's starting lineup.
Insight: Pierzynski is hitting .278 with three homers, 16 RBI and a .723 OPS this year. David Ross will be behind the plate, but his .182 batting average and .674 OPS should send fantasy owners running in the opposite direction.
Clay Buchholz, SP5/9/2014 10:06:00 PM
Description: Boston starter Clay Buchholz has allowed five more earned runs in 36 1/3 innings this year than he gave up in 108 1/3 last season.
Insight: The Rangers crushed Buchholz for 10 hits and six runs in 4 1/3 innings Friday night. His ERA and WHIP are now 6.44 and 1.73, respectively.
Xander Bogaerts, SS5/7/2014 3:11:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts will get a night off Wednesday against the Reds, according to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald.
Insight: Bogaerts hasn't made a big impact in fantasy leagues so far. He's hitting .280 with one homer, five RBI, 13 runs and one steal. He does have a .394 OBP, however.
A.J. Pierzynski, C5/4/2014 6:23:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski homered Sunday against Oakland.
Insight: Pierzynski is hitting .291 with three homers, 15 RBI and a .748 OPS this year. Fantasy owners shouldn't expect him to be much better than that.
Mike Napoli, 1B5/4/2014 12:58:00 PM
Description: Boston 1B Mike Napoli is getting a day off Sunday against Oakland. SOURCE: Pete Abraham, Boston Globe
Insight: Napoli (.290, 5 HR, 17 RBI) has had a quiet series, going 1-for-6 with three strikeouts and three walks. Mike Carp (.226, 0 HR, 2 RBI) will get the start at first base.
Jon Lester, SP5/3/2014 4:50:00 PM
Description: Boston left-hander Jon Lester was dealing Saturday in a win over Oakland.
Insight: The left-hander racked up a career-high 15 strikeouts while allowing just one hit in eight innings. He'll make his next start Saturday versus Texas.
Shane Victorino, RFHot5/3/2014 1:11:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino isn't starting Saturday's game against Oakland. SOURCE: Tony Lee, ESPN Boston
Insight: Victorino has gone seven for his last 16 to raise his average from .133 to .290. Jackie Bradley Jr. (.233, 0 HR, 13 RBI) is starting in right field today with Grady Sizemore (.213, 2 HR, 8 RBI) taking over in center.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B5/3/2014 10:01:00 AM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia launched his 100th career home run Friday on a sixth inning grand slam.
Insight: Oakland challenged the ruling but the umpires determined after watching the replay that the ball was not interfered with. Pedroia, who hadn't homered in a game since last September, is hitting .276 with ten RBI this season.
Shane Victorino, RF4/30/2014 9:50:00 AM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino broke out of a mini-slump by going 4-for-4 Tuesday in a win over Tampa Bay.
Insight: Victorino had been 2-for-15 with five strikeouts in his previous three contests. His return to the lineup after missing the first three weeks with a hamstring injury could mean less playing time for Grady Sizemore (.208, 2 HR, 7 RBI) and Jonny Gomes (.230, 2 HR, 8 RBI).
Grady Sizemore, CFCold4/29/2014 3:20:00 PM
Description: Red Sox center fielder Grady Sizemore is hitless in 13 at-bats against Rays starter Erik Bedard.
Insight: Sizemore is just 2-for-23 over the past six games. Expect Boston to sit him in favor of an outfield of Shane Victorino, Jackie Bradley and Jonny Gomes. Update - Sizemore is not in the starting lineup.
A.J. Pierzynski, C4/29/2014 10:18:00 AM
Description: Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski is a career .429 hitter (9-for-21) with a pair of homers versus Rays left-hander Erik Bedard.
Insight: Fantasy owners looking for Pierzynski to produce at his 2012 level (27 HR, 77 RBI, .827 OPS) will be disappointed, but he should be able to repeat last year's numbers (17 HR, 70 RBI, .722 OPS).
A.J. Pierzynski, C4/27/2014 10:56:00 AM
Description: Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski has done well against Toronto right-hander R.A. Dickey.
Insight: He has five hits in 12 prior at bats (.417). Pierzynski's 12 RBI ranks tenth among big league catchers. Four of those came yesterday on a third inning grand slam.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B4/27/2014 10:52:00 AM
Description: Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has struggled against Blue Jays knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.
Insight: He has just two hits in 12 trips to the plate against Dickey. Pedroia (.275, 0 HR, 6 RBI) is 3-for-9 in the series with two RBI.
Shane Victorino, RF4/27/2014 10:18:00 AM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino won't be in the lineup Sunday against the Blue Jays. SOURCE: Red Sox on Twitter
Insight: Victorino has gone 2-for-15 in three games since returning from a strained hamstring. Jonny Gomes (.226, 2 HR, 8 RBI) will get the start in right field Sunday in the series finale.

Description: A.J. Pierzynski powered the Red Sox to victory with his eighth career grand slam Saturday against Toronto.
Insight: Pierzynski's blast came as part of a six-run third inning. It was his only hit of the afternoon. He's hitting .277 this year, which is only a few ticks below his career average (.283).
Xander Bogaerts, SS4/26/2014 10:45:00 AM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts is not in Saturday's starting lineup.
Insight: Bogaerts is off to a solid start, batting .277 with 10 runs scored. Jonathan Herrera will get a start, but he hasn't shown that he's worthy of attention from fantasy owners.
Mike Napoli, 1B4/26/2014 10:29:00 AM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli is 2-for-16 (.125) against Blue Jays right-hander Brandon Morrow.
Insight: This might be a good day to sit him and let Mike Carp get a few at-bats. Napoli is off to a solid start, batting .307 with five homers, 15 RBI and a .947 OPS. Update - Napoli is not in Saturday's starting lineup.
Mike Napoli, 1B4/26/2014 10:10:00 AM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli is 2-for-16 (.125) againsy Blue Jays right-hander Brandon Morrow.
Insight: This might be a good day to sit him and let Mike Carp get a few at-bats. Napoli is off to a solid start, batting .307 with five homers, 15 RBI and a .947 OPS.
Dustin Pedroia, 2BHot4/26/2014 10:05:00 AM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia is a career .522 hitter versus Toronto starter Brandon Morrow.
Insight: Pedroia is 12-for-23 with a pair of homers in their previous matchups. Though not off to a great start this season (.276, 0 HR, 6 RBI) he has multiple hits in five of the last seven games. Start him.
David Ortiz, DH4/26/2014 10:03:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is a career .412 hitter (7-for-17) with three homers and a 1.524 OPS versus Blue Jays starter Brandon Morrow.
Insight: Ortiz (.256, .809 OPS) has five home runs this season, including one in the series opener on Friday night. Start him in this favorable matchup.
Mike Napoli, 1BHot4/25/2014 10:21:00 PM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and one RBI Friday at Toronto.
Insight: While the first baseman's 26.5 percent K rate is an improvement on last season's 32.4, it's still too high for Napoli to maintain a .307 average. He has hit .393 on balls in play even though his line-drive rate is well below league average.
Jake Peavy, SP4/25/2014 10:18:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Jake Peavy bounced back from his worst start of the season with seven strong innings Friday at Toronto.
Insight: Peavy gave up five runs on 10 hits Sunday against the Orioles, but he held the Blue Jays to one run on five hits, struck out seven and walked one to pick up his first win of the season. The right-hander has had some control problems (16 BB) but struck out more than a batter per inning (32 K) and posted a 2.87 ERA in 31 1/3 innings.
Grady Sizemore, CFCold4/25/2014 3:55:00 PM
Description: Red Sox center fielder Grady Sizemore is not in Friday's starting lineup. The team will go with Jonny Gomes, Jackie Bradley and Shane Victorino
Insight: Sizemore is just 2-for-31 (.064) over the past eight games. This was to be expected from a batter who missed as much time over the past two years as Sizemore has.
Will Middlebrooks, 3B4/25/2014 1:59:00 PM
Description: Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks has been activated from the 15-day disabled list and should move right back into the starting lineup.
Insight: Jonathan Herrera and his .207 batting average will take a seat.
Felix Doubront, SPCold4/24/2014 9:55:00 PM
Description: Red Sox lefty Felix Doubront gave up seven runs (three earned) on six hits in 2 2/3 innings Thursday against the Yankees.
Insight: Doubront has a 6.00 ERA, a 1.71 WHIP and a 16/11 K/BB in 24 innings this season. He walks far too many batters to be trusted in fantasy leagues.
Shane Victorino, RF4/24/2014 5:20:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino (hamstring) is in the starting lineup Thursday against CC Sabathia and the Yankees.
Insight: Victorino is a career .409 hitter (9-for-22) against Sabathia. The outfielder was activated from the disabled list Thursday after missing the first three weeks of the year with a Grade 1 hamstring strain.
Shane Victorino, RF4/24/2014 10:15:00 AM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino (hamstring) is healthy enough to return to the lineup and has a favorable matchup on Thursday for a possible season debut.
Insight: Victorino is a career .409 hitter (9-for-22) against Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia. He's also 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts.
John Lackey, SP 4/23/2014 10:44:00 PM
Description: Boston right-hander John Lackey struck out 11 Yankees and allowed one run on seven hits over eight innings in Wednesday's victory.
Insight: Manager John Farrell said Lackey (3-2, 4.22 ERA, 1.31 WHIP) and pitching coach Juan Nieves made some adjustments after Lackey allowed 12 earned runs on 20 hits over 11 innings his last two starts.
Shane Victorino, RF4/23/2014 6:00:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino (hamstring) is healthy enough to return but the team will wait to activate him after Jon Lester lasted only 4 2/3 innings on Tuesday night. SOURCE: Sean McAdam, csnne.com.
Insight: With the bullpen worn out, the Red Sox have opted to call up Alex Wilson rather than activate Victorino. The outfielder should be back Thursday and is expected to hit first or second when he returns.
Daniel Nava, LF4/23/2014 1:35:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have demoted outfielder Daniel Nava to Triple-A Pawtucket. SOURCE: Alex Speier, WEEI
Insight: Right-hander Alex Wilson was called up in the corresponding roster move. Nava opened the year as Boston's starting right fielder but after hitting .149 in 17 games, it's clear he wasn't up to the task. Even if we see Nava back in the big leagues this season, he won't be a fantasy option.
Shane Victorino, RF4/23/2014 1:04:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino is healthy enough to return but the team may wait to activate him after Jon Lester lasted only 4 2/3 innings on Tuesday night. SOURCE: Alex Speier, WEEI
Insight: With the bullpen worn out, the Red Sox may need to call up an arm from Pawtucket to eat up some innings. Either way, Victorino (strained hamstring) should be back with the team later this week.
Mike Napoli, 1B4/22/2014 10:39:00 PM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli homered for the second straight game Tuesday against the Yankees.
Insight: Napoli is hitting .286, but his average will soon tumble. He has struck out in 29.5 percent of his plate appearances and hit .370 on balls in play even though his line-drive rate is just 11.8 percent.
David Ortiz, DH4/22/2014 10:36:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz hit his fourth homer of the season Tuesday against the Yankees.
Insight: Ortiz (.256, .782 OPS) has gone 6-for-15 with two home runs and three RBI his last four games.
Jon Lester, SP4/22/2014 10:14:00 PM
Description: Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester entered Tuesday's game having walked four batters in his first 29 innings this season but he issued four free passes against the Yankees.
Insight: Lester also allowed 11 hits and eight runs, though just three were earned so he was able to walk away with a 2.67 ERA. He struck out seven and has a 9.62 K/9 this season.
Daniel Nava, LF4/22/2014 6:36:00 PM
Description: Boston outfielder Daniel Nava won't be in the lineup Tuesday against New York.
Insight: Nava has had a very poor season offensively (.149, 2 HR, 3 RBI) and is unlikely to be an everyday player when Shane Victorino (strained hamstring) returns from the disabled list later this week.
Shane Victorino, RF4/22/2014 5:33:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino (hamstring) could be back Wednesday, according to Sean McAdam of csnne.com.
Insight: Victorino will play his third rehab game Tuesday and should be activated for Wednesday's game unless he suffers a setback. Boston has a crowded outfield at the moment with Jackie Bradley Jr., Grady Sizemore, Jonny Gomes, Daniel Nava and Mike Carp all seeing action early in the season. The Red Sox are expected to go with Sizemore, Bradley and Victorino as the regular starters and Mike Carp could be the odd man out on the roster.
Grady Sizemore, CFCold4/22/2014 10:45:00 AM
Description: Red Sox center fielder Grady Sizemore's slump continued Tuesday against the Yankees.
Insight: Sizemore went 0-for-4 and is one for his last 26. His averaged has dropped from .343 to .213 during the slump.
Joel Hanrahan, RP4/21/2014 8:50:00 PM
Description: According to ESPN's Buster Olney, reliever Joel Hanrahan worked out for teams on Thursday.
Insight: The Indians, Mets, Red Sox and Tigers are among the teams interested. Hanrahan hasn't pitched in the major leagues since undergoing Tommy John surgery early last season.
A.J. Pierzynski, C4/21/2014 9:57:00 AM
Description: Boston catcher A.J. Pierzynski will rest on Monday with David Ross getting the start behind the plate.
Insight: No injury, just a routine day off with an 11 am starter after a late night. Pierzynski is batting .235 this season with one homer and six RBI. Fantasy owners would like to see the guy who batted .272 with 17 HR and 70 RBI in Texas last season show up soon.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B4/21/2014 9:42:00 AM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia is a career .500 hitter versus Baltimore starter Wei-Yin Chen (11-for-22).
Insight: Pedroia (.260, 0 HR, 2 RBI) is just starting to get it going with five hits in his last three games. He's a premier fantasy second baseman in a favorable matchup who is just finding his batting stroke. Make him a must start on Monday morning.
Jackie Bradley Jr., LFCold4/21/2014 9:18:00 AM
Description: Red Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. will start in center and bat eighth for Monday morning's game against Baltimore.

Grady Sizemore, CF4/21/2014 9:15:00 AM

Brock Holt, 3B4/21/2014 9:12:00 AM
Description: Red Sox infielder Brock Holt will lead off for the first time this season.
Insight: Holt (.232, 0 HR, 2 RBI) normally bats near the bottom of the Red Sox order. Center fielder Grady Sizemore, who led off Sunday night, gets the day off.
Will Middlebrooks, 3B4/20/2014 4:14:00 PM
Description: According to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald, Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks will begin a rehab assignment on Monday.
Insight: Lauber didn't mention where the rehab assignment will take place but we're betting he'll end up in Triple-A Pawtucket. The plan is for Middlebrooks, who has been out with a strained calf, to return to the majors by next weekend. With Shane Victorino (strained hamstring) also close to returning, Boston has some important roster decisions to make.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B4/20/2014 9:51:00 AM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia has collected seven hits in 13 at-bats against Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez.
Insight: Pedroia (.250) has gone 5-for-17 (.294) with two doubles and four walks since he returned to the lineup from wrist inflammation, and he'll face a struggling Jimenez Sunday.
David Ortiz, DH 4/19/2014 7:19:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run Saturday against Baltimore.
Insight: Ortiz is only hitting .239 with a .719 OPS so far. The DH has hit .309 or better the last three seasons so we're confident he'll turn it around.
A.J. Pierzynski, C4/19/2014 11:40:00 AM
Description: Boston catcher A.J. Pierzynski will rest on Saturday with David Ross getting the start behind the plate.
Insight: No injury, just a routine day off after a late night. Pierzynski is batting .255 this season with one homer and six RBI. The Red Sox are hoping for a more production than that.
Ryan Roberts, 3BCold4/18/2014 8:01:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have designated infielder Ryan Roberts for assignment.
Insight: Roberts went just 2-for-19 during his brief tenure with the Sox. His roster spot will be filled by Brock Holt.
David Ortiz, DHCold4/18/2014 6:43:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is not in the lineup Friday against Baltimore.
Insight: Mike Napoli is starting at DH with Mike Carp getting the nod at first base. A 1-for-20 slump has dropped Ortiz's batting average to .222.
Shane Victorino, RF4/17/2014 7:58:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino is set to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday. SOURCE: Tim Britton, Providence Journal
Insight: He strained his hamstring on the last day of spring training. Victorino could be activated as soon as Wednesday. Boston has a crowded outfield at the moment with Jackie Bradley Jr., Grady Sizemore, Jonny Gomes, Daniel Nava and Mike Carp all seeing action early in the season. Carp (.214, 0 HR, 2 RBI) is likely to be the odd man out when Victorino returns.
Mike Napoli, 1B4/17/2014 6:55:00 PM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli has returned to the starting lineup after missing one game with a dislocated finger. SOURCE: Ian Browne, MLB.com
Insight: He's hitting in his usual cleanup spot behind David Ortiz and ahead of Jonny Gomes. Napoli's .302 batting average leads the team.
Koji Uehara, RP4/17/2014 10:32:00 AM
Description: Boston closer Koji Uehara (shoulder) is expected to be available on Thursday after completing a bullpen session Wednesday.
Insight: Edward Mujica has been serving as Boston's closer while Uehara was sidelined, but blew the save opportunity on Wednesday night.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B4/16/2014 4:20:00 PM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia has returned to the starting lineup. SOURCE: Peter Abraham, Boston Globe

Grady Sizemore, CF4/16/2014 10:57:00 AM
Description: Red Sox center fielder Grady Sizemore is just 3-for-21 (.143) against White Sox starter John Danks.
Insight: Sizemore played just 210 games from 2009-11 and missed all of 2012-13, so he hasn't faced Danks since 2008. The 31-year-old outfielder is hitting .308 with two homers, one steal and an .870 OPS in 11 games this year.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B4/16/2014 9:42:00 AM
Description: If Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia (wrist) can return to the lineup Wednesday against the White Sox, he'll face a pitcher he's gone 2-for-17 against in John Danks.
Insight: Pedroia had a cortisone shot in his sore left wrist on Tuesday and didn't start for the second straight game. He pinch ran in the ninth inning. The 30-year-old has zero homers, one RBI and a .236 average this season.
Jake Peavy, SPHot4/16/2014 9:35:00 AM
Description: Red Sox starter Jake Peavy has three no decisions in three starts even though he has allowed four runs on 12 hits in 18 2/3 innings.
Insight: Peavy has gone 6+ innings in all three outings. His walk total is high (10 BBs) and he has allowed three home runs, but he has fanned 20 batters and allowed just four total line drives.
Mike Napoli, 1B 4/16/2014 9:17:00 AM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli suffered a dislocated left ring finger during Tuesday's game, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe. He's day-to-day.
Insight: He suffered the injury when he slid head-first into second base in the ninth inning. The finger looked pretty mangled but he managed to escape without a fracture or strain.

Dustin Pedroia, 2B4/15/2014 5:42:00 PM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia was given a cortisone shot in his injured wrist. He expects to return Wednesday against Chicago. SOURCE: Gordon Edes, ESPN Boston
Insight: Pedroia played all of last season with a torn muscle in his thumb and only wound up missing two games. You have to admire Pedroia's toughness, though it's a little concerning he only has nine home runs in his last 758 at bats.
Koji Uehara, RP4/14/2014 8:39:00 PM
Description: Boston closer Koji Uehara has no structural damage in his shoulder, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
Insight: Uehara will rejoin the team Tuesday in Chicago after missing Boston's four-game set against the Yankees due to shoulder stiffness. The Red Sox went to Edward Mujica for a save Friday and he converted it.
Dustin Pedroia, 2BCold4/14/2014 5:44:00 PM
Description: Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has no fracture or structural damage in his left wrist, according to Rob Bradford of weei.com.
Insight: Pedroia should avoid the disabled list and may even rejoin the lineup Tuesday at Chicago. The 30-year-old missed Sunday's series finale against the rival Yankees and went 7-for-45 (.156) over his last 10 games.
Dustin Pedroia, 2BCold4/13/2014 6:17:00 PM
Description: Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is not in Sunday's lineup and is going back to Boston for tests on his sore left wrist. SOURCE: Gordon Edes, espnboston.com.
Insight: If Pedroia has to go on the disabled list, the Red Sox would probably fill the spot with Ryan Roberts, though they may go the bold route and call up Mookie Betts from Double-A Portland. Betts is hitting .457 with six extra-base hits and four steals in 35 at-bats this season and is ranked as Boston's No. 6 prospect by MLB.com. We'll see how Pedroia's tests go.
Koji Uehara, RP4/12/2014 9:12:00 PM
Description: Boston closer Koji Uehara is scheduled to long toss on Sunday. If he's unable to, the Red Sox will probably send him back to Boston to get his shoulder looked at. SOURCE: Sean McAdam, Comcast Sportsnet New England
Insight: Koji is battling a stiff shoulder, which is why Edward Mujica pitched the ninth inning last night against New York. The 39-year-old could be looking at a stint on the 15-day DL.
Edward Mujica, RP4/12/2014 9:07:00 PM
Description: Boston right-hander Edward Mujica will fill in at closer until Koji Uehara heals from a stiff shoulder.
Insight: Mujica had one very poor outing against Milwaukee (4 H, 4 ER in 2/3 of an inning) but has looked sharp in his other three appearances. He's definitely worth adding, especially if Uehara lands on the disabled list.
Jon Lester, SP4/12/2014 9:04:00 PM
Description: Boston ace Jon Lester recently turned down a four-year contract extension. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: The offer was reportedly worth between $70-80 million. Lester (1-2, 2.57 ERA) figures he can make more on the open market this winter and he's probably right. Still, it's hard to envision him playing for anyone other than the Red Sox.
Koji Uehara, RP4/12/2014 11:54:00 AM
Description: Nothing has been officially announced but Red Sox closer Koji Uehara last pitched on Wednesday and Edward Mujica closed on Friday night.
Insight: Uehara (two saves, 0.00 ERA) is apparently dealing with shoulder stiffness. He has not been sent back to Boston for further exam, so hopefully its just a short-term issue.
David Ortiz, DH4/12/2014 9:28:00 AM
Description: Boston DH David Ortiz is a career .588 hitter (10-for-17) versus Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda.
Insight: Ortiz is batting .286 this spring with a pair of homers and eight RBI. The Red Sox DH is a career .318 hitter against the Yankees and a .316 in Yankee Stadium. Start him.
Koji Uehara, RP4/11/2014 10:14:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox went to Edward Mujica for the save in a 4-2 game Friday night instead of Koji Uehara.
Insight: Uehara (two saves, 0.00 ERA) last pitched on April 9 so he was rested. We'll see what manager John Farrell says in the post-game presser.
Jon Lester, SP4/11/2014 10:13:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Jon Lester earned his first win of the season with 6 2/3 strong innings Friday against the Yankees.

Grady Sizemore, CF4/11/2014 10:08:00 PM
Description: Red Sox center fielder Grady Sizemore went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer Friday against the Yankees.

Garin Cecchini, 3B4/11/2014 2:55:00 PM
Description: Red Sox minor league 3B Garin Cecchini is off to a fast start, batting .320 through his first nine games.
Insight: Cecchini has batted over .300 for the past two seasons and on many clubs would be in the majors, but his way is blocked by Will Middlebrooks. It may take an injury or trade to get him to the majors.
David Ortiz, DH4/9/2014 8:19:00 PM
Description: Boston DH David Ortiz socked a go-ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday against the Rangers.
Insight: It was Ortiz' second homer of the season. He also had a double. The DH has been dealing with some calf tightness but it isn't considered serious at this time.
Grady Sizemore, CF4/9/2014 12:30:00 PM
Description: Red Sox center fielder Grady Sizemore will be given the day off Wednesday versus Texas. SOURCE: Marty Gitlin, CBS Sports
Insight: Sizemore is only a .228 career hitter against left-handers so it makes sense to sit him today against Robbie Ross (0-0, 3.60 ERA). Jackie Bradley Jr. (.400, 0 HR, 5 RBI) is filling in at center field.
Jackie Bradley Jr., LFHot4/9/2014 11:03:00 AM
Description: Red Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. could remain in the starting lineup even after Shane Victorino returns from a strained hamstring. SOURCE: Alex Speier, WEEI
Insight: Bradley's defense has been better than Grady Sizemore's and it's possible the team could move Sizemore to left field while using Bradley as the everyday center fielder. Daniel Nava, Jonny Gomes and Mike Carp could all see their playing time reduced if Bradley keeps up his torrid hot streak (.421 AVG over his last five games).
A.J. Pierzynski, C4/8/2014 10:25:00 PM
Description: Boston catcher A.J. Pierzynski has put together back-to-back three-hit games.

Mike Napoli, 1BHot4/8/2014 9:49:00 PM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli is having a great series against his former team.
Insight: He went 3-for-5 Tuesday and is now 6-for-10 against Texas over the last two games. Napoli (.364, 2 HR, 8 RBI) is usually a swing for the fences guy but all six of his hits this series have been singles.
Felix Doubront, SPCold4/8/2014 9:32:00 PM
Description: Red Sox lefty Felix Doubront got lit up Tuesday in a loss to Texas (6 H, 3 BB, 5 ER).
Insight: He lasted just 2 2/3 innings. Doubront (1-1, 9.00 ERA) has never finished with an ERA lower than four and his strikeout to walk ratio was one of the worst in MLB last season (1.96). He's not a reliable fantasy option and never has been.
Craig Breslow, RP4/8/2014 6:33:00 PM
Description: Red Sox left-hander Craig Breslow is expected to be activated from the disabled list ahead of Wednesday's game against Texas. SOURCE: Scott Lauber, Boston Herald
Insight: He's been out with a shoulder injury. Breslow was excellent last season (5-2, 1.81 ERA) and should serve as Boston's left-handed specialist out of the pen.
Ryan Roberts, 2B4/8/2014 2:16:00 PM
Description: Red Sox newly-acquired infielder Ryan Roberts will make his debut on Tuesday night at third base.

A.J. Pierzynski, C4/7/2014 10:43:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski drilled three hits Monday against Texas.

Jackie Bradley Jr., LF4/7/2014 10:37:00 PM
Description: Boston outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. collected three hits Monday in a 5-1 win over Texas.
Insight: He's done a nice job filling in for Shane Victorino with a .375 average in six appearances. Monday was Bradley's second career three-hit game.
John Lackey, SPHot4/7/2014 10:30:00 PM
Description: Boston right-hander John Lackey improved to 2-0 Monday with a win over Texas.
Insight: He allowed one unearned run in seven innings. Lackey (1.38 ERA) didn't win his second game until May 19th last season. His next start is scheduled for Saturday against the Yankees.
Ryan Roberts, 2B4/7/2014 6:26:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have signed infielder Ryan Roberts to a one-year deal.

Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is back in the lineup after getting Saturday's game off, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe.
Insight: Ortiz got in a pinch-hitting appearance in Saturday's 11-inning loss to the Brewers. He's hitting .333 with one homer and one strikeout this season.
Will Middlebrooks, 3B4/6/2014 10:05:00 AM
Description: Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks has been diagnosed with a calf strain, according to Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal.
Insight: Middlebrooks was scratched from Saturday's lineup due to the injury. He'll undergo an MRI Sunday morning.
Will Middlebrooks, 3B4/5/2014 7:53:00 PM
Description: Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks was scratched from Saturday's lineup due to a right calf cramp, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
Insight: Boston also scratched Mike Carp (lower-back tightness) and David Ortiz is getting the night off, so Daniel Nava (1B), Jonny Gomes (LF) and Jonathan Herrera (3B) all started.
Mike Carp, 1B4/5/2014 6:39:00 PM
Description: Mike Carp was scratched from Boston's lineup Saturday due to lower-back tightness, according to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald.
Insight: David Ortiz is not in the lineup so Carp was starting at first base and Mike Napoli at DH in the initial lineup Saturday. Daniel Nava will move to first and Jonny Gomes will start in left field against the Brewers.
David Ortiz, DH4/5/2014 3:47:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is not in Saturday night's starting lineup versus Milwaukee.
Insight: Ortiz is off quickly this season, batting .353 in the early going. It appears to just be a day off. Mike Napoli is the DH and Mike Carp is at first.
Grady Sizemore, CF4/5/2014 3:45:00 PM
Description: Boston center fielder Grady Sizemore is in the leadoff spot for Saturday night's game with Milwaukee.
Insight: Considering his time sidelined by injury Sizemore is off to a quick start this season (.300, 1 HR) and will get a shot at the top of the lineup. If successful this could further increase his fantasy value.
Mike Carp, 1B4/4/2014 11:10:00 AM
Description: With Shane Victorino out with a strained hamstring, Mike Carp is in the starting lineup on Friday.
Insight: He's playing left field and batting fifth. He's yet to prove that he's a full-time player or fantasy worthy starter.
Grady Sizemore, CF4/3/2014 6:29:00 PM
Description: Boston center fielder Grady Sizemore isn't in Thursday night's starting lineup. SOURCE: Tim Britton, Providence Journal
Insight: Jackie Bradley Jr. is making his first start of the season. Sizemore blasted his first home run in almost three years Monday in a 2-1 loss to Baltimore.
Dustin Pedroia, 2BHot4/3/2014 10:13:00 AM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia is a career .579 hitter against Baltimore starter Wei-Yin Chen.
Insight: Pedroia is off to a hot start, collecting multiple hits in each of the first two games this season. He's a must start on Thursday.
John Lackey, SP4/2/2014 10:41:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter John Lackey tossed six innings and allowed two runs on three hits to beat the Orioles in his first start of the season.
Insight: Lackey was horrible in 2011 (6.41 ERA in 160 innings) and he missed all of 2012, but the right-hander was revitalized in 2013 after getting in better shape and had a 3.52 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP in 189 1/3 innings. He has remained in good shape and should have an ERA below 4.00 again.
David Ortiz, DH4/2/2014 10:38:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz smacked a two-run homer off Ubaldo Jimenez of the Orioles Wednesday for his first of the year.
Insight: Ortiz hit 30 homers last season and has batted at least .309 in three straight years. Health is the only concern with the 38-year-old Red Sox DH.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B4/2/2014 10:36:00 PM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia had four hits and two runs Wednesday at Baltimore.
Insight: Pedroia is off to a hot start, collecting multiple hits in each of the first two games this season.
Mike Napoli, 1B4/2/2014 10:34:00 PM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli had two hits, including a homer, and four RBI in five at-bats Wednesday at Baltimore.
Insight: Napoli hit .259 with 23 homers and a career-high 92 RBI last season. He has less fantasy value this year because he doesn't hold catcher eligibility, however.
Grady Sizemore, CF3/31/2014 8:49:00 PM
Description: Red Sox center fielder Grady Sizemore hit his first home run in 990 days on Opening Day against Baltimore.
Insight: His last home run in the big leagues also came at Camden Yards. He missed all of 2012 and 2013 due to injuries after playing just 104 games combined in 2010 and 2011, but he beat out Jackie Bradley Jr. for the starting job this spring.
Will Middlebrooks, 3B3/31/2014 12:33:00 PM
Description: Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks has never gotten a hit against Baltimore right-hander Chris Tillman.
Insight: In fact, in 14 plate appearances, he's never even reached base against him. Middlebrooks represents one of the biggest question marks in Boston's lineup after struggling to a .227 average in 348 at bats last season.
A.J. Pierzynski, C3/31/2014 12:30:00 PM
Description: Boston catcher A.J. Pierzynski is 1-for-10 in his career versus O's starter Chris Tillman.
Insight: Pierzynski (.283 lifetime average) is one of the better hitting catchers in baseball but we're not expecting much from him Monday with Tillman (16-7, 3.71 ERA in 2013) throwing for Baltimore.
David Ortiz, DH3/31/2014 12:28:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz could be in for a rough afternoon Monday against Orioles starter Chris Tillman.
Insight: Ortiz has never figured out Tillman, hitting just .063 against him in 16 at bats. Overall, Tillman went 3-1 in six starts versus Boston last season with a 2.65 ERA
Daniel Nava, LF3/31/2014 11:12:00 AM
Description: Daniel Nava will hit leadoff and start in right field Monday against Baltimore. SOURCE: Pete Abraham, Boston Globe
Insight: Nava spent most of his time hitting sixth last season but will step into the leadoff role while Shane Victorino is sidelined with a hamstring injury. His batting average (.303) was the eighth-highest in the American League last season.
Mike Carp, 1B3/31/2014 11:09:00 AM
Description: With Shane Victorino out with a strained hamstring, Mike Carp will move into the starting lineup Monday against Baltimore. SOURCE: Pete Abraham, Boston Globe
Insight: He's playing left field and batting fifth. Despite hitting .296 across 216 at bats last season, Carp is likely to be in a platoon situation with Jonny Gomes.
Jackie Bradley Jr., LF3/31/2014 11:06:00 AM
Description: The Red Sox have re-called outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Insight: Well, that was quick. Bradley was sent to the minors last week but is already needed in Boston with Shane Victorino (strained hamstring) headed to the disabled list. Bradley hit .189 in 95 at bats in the major leagues last season.
Shane Victorino, RF3/31/2014 11:02:00 AM
Description: Boston has placed outfielder Shane Victorino on the 15-day DL with a strained hamstring.
Insight: Jackie Bradley Jr. has been called up from Triple-A to take his place. Daniel Nava will start at right field Monday versus the Orioles.
Shane Victorino, RF3/31/2014 10:30:00 AM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino is unlikely to suit up Monday against the Orioles. SOURCE: Nick Cafardo, Boston Globe
Insight: He hurt his hamstring in Boston's final spring training game this past weekend. We'd expect Jonny Gomes (.247, 13 HR, 52 RBI in 2013) to get the start in his place.
Shane Victorino, RF3/29/2014 4:31:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino re-injured his hamstring on Saturday. He's on his way to Boston for an MRI. SOURCE: Scott Lauber, Boston Herald
Insight: That puts Victorino's status in doubt for Monday's season opener in Balimore. With Victorino sidelined, the Red Sox would likely use Jonny Gomes in left field with Daniel Nava moving over to right. If Victorino lands on the disabled list, there's a good chance Boston would call up Jackie Bradley from Triple-A Pawtucket. Bradley was one of the last players cut when the team finalized its 25-man roster earlier this week.
Jon Lester, SP3/29/2014 11:18:00 AM
Description: Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington says the team is pressing the "pause button" on contract negotiations with Jon Lester. SOURCE: Brian MacPherson, Providence Journal
Insight: Cherington expects the two sides to re-visit the deal before the offseason. Keep in mind, Dustin Pedroia signed his eight-year extension last July. We're confident a deal will get done sooner or later.
Grady Sizemore, CF3/28/2014 6:12:00 PM
Description: Grady Sizemore will be Boston's Opening Day center fielder, according to Gordon Edes of espnboston.com. Jackie Bradley Jr. has been demoted to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Insight: Sizemore has hit .333 with one home run and an .842 OPS in 39 at-bats this spring. The 31-year-old Sizemore is a former 30-30 man but that was back in 2008; he missed all of the last two seasons after playing 104 games combined in 2010-11 due to injuries. Manager John Farrell said Thursday that Sizemore will hit in the middle of the order rather than leadoff, so he could have good value as a run producer.
Jackie Bradley Jr., LF3/28/2014 12:40:00 PM
Description: Jackie Bradley has been sent down to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Insight: Bradley lost the battle with Grady Sizemore after batting just .158 this spring and .189 last year. Of course, Sizemore has a long history of injury and Bradley could be back with the big club soon.
Daniel Nava, LF3/28/2014 10:44:00 AM
Description: Red Sox outfielder Daniel Nava could see a lot of work at the top of the Boston lineup this season.
Insight: Nava and Grady Sizemore have been the two players at the top of the Red Sox lineup the past week and manager manager John Farrell said Sizemore would bat in the middle of the lineup. Translation: Nava must be the leadoff guy. The 31-year-old is coming off a season in which he batted .303 with 12 homers, 66 RBI, 77 runs and an .830 OPS in 134 games.
Grady Sizemore, CF3/27/2014 9:10:00 PM
Description: Red Sox manager John Farrell said that if CF Grady Sizemore makes the Opening Day roster, he will almost always bat in the middle of the order, not leadoff, according to mlb.com.
Insight: Sizemore has hit .306 with one home runs and a .759 OPS in 36 at-bats this spring. He's battling Jackie Bradley Jr. (.167 this spring) for the starting center-field job. The 31-year-old Sizemore is a former 30-30 man but that was back in 2008; he missed all of the last two seasons after playing 104 games combined in 2010-11 due to injuries.
Shane Victorino, RF3/27/2014 5:42:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino (side) played a minor league game without any issues Thursday, according to csnne.com.
Insight: Victorino was scratched with left side discomfort on Tuesday. He should be ready for Opening Day after Thursday's development.
Shane Victorino, RF3/26/2014 9:54:00 AM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino (side) will miss his second straight game Wednesday, according to Jason Mastrodonato of masslive.com.
Insight: Victorino was scratched with left side discomfort on Tuesday and is still hurting. However, he said he'll be ready for Monday's season opener.
Jon Lester, SP3/24/2014 8:24:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox are hoping to sign Jon Lester to a contract extension before the end of spring training. SOURCE: ESPN Boston
Insight: They took care of David Ortiz yesterday (one-year, $16 million extension) and now it's Lester's turn. Lester enjoyed a nice bounceback season in 2013, posting a 3.75 ERA in 33 starts. He'll get the start Opening Day against Baltimore next Monday.
David Ortiz, DH3/23/2014 4:57:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox and designated hitter David Ortiz have agreed to a one-year contract extension. SOURCE: Gordon Edes, ESPN Boston
Insight: An announcement is expected to be made on Monday. According to reports, Ortiz's 2015 salary will pay him $16 million so he's getting a slight raise. He's our 74th ranked fantasy player heading into the 2014 campaign.
David Ortiz, DH3/21/2014 8:13:00 PM
Description: Boston DH David Ortiz is close to signing a one-year contract extension. SOURCE: Sean McAdam, Comcast Sportsnet New England
Insight: It's supposedly "in the neighborhood" of $15 million, which is how much Ortiz will make in 2014. There was never any question that Ortiz would finish his career in Boston. He's hit at least .300 in each of his last three seasons.
Stephen Drew, SS3/15/2014 7:05:00 PM
Description: Shortstop Stephen Drew seems like an obvious fit for the Tigers now that Jose Iglesias (shin) could miss most of the season.
Insight: Scott Boras has the Tigers right where he wants them. Drew is an above average defensive player with decent power for a middle infielder. Though nothing has been decided yet, this deal makes too much sense not to happen.
Clay Buchholz, SP3/12/2014 11:19:00 AM
Description: WEEI's Rob Bradford is reporting that Clay Buchholz will open the season as Boston's No. 5 starter.
Insight: That might be the right place for Buchholz given how fragile he's been in the past. In seven major league seasons, the two-time All-Star has never made more than 29 starts.
Shane Victorino, RF3/8/2014 7:16:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino may give up hitting from the left side of the plate altogether, according to Tim Britton of the Providence Journal, though Victorino said "no decision's been made."
Insight: A leg injury prevented him from hitting lefty late last season and throughout the playoffs. He hit .314 with six homers and an .861 OPS in 169 at-bats as a lefty last season but in his career has been a much better right-handed hitter than a left-handed one.
Jake Peavy, SP3/7/2014 9:16:00 PM
Description: Boston righthander Jake Peavy hopes to make his spring training debut March 13th against Minnesota. SOURCE: Brian MacPherson, Providence Journal
Insight: Peavy (12-5, 4.17 ERA) cut his finger last weekend but it wasn't on his pitching hand. It doesn't sound like Peavy is in any danger of missing the start of the regular season.
Jake Peavy, SP3/4/2014 6:59:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Jake Peavy (finger) may not be ready in time for the start of the regular season, according to mlb.com.
Insight: Peavy suffered a deep laceration on his left index finger with a fishing knife. He was able to throw on Tuesday but hasn't been cleared to put his glove on. "We've got an opportunity to keep his arm moving, keep him in shape," said manager John Farrell. "He'll stretch a little bit with long toss today and the plan is for him to throw a bullpen tomorrow, without a glove. The precaution we have to take right now is making sure he doesn't perspire too much that may cause bacteria or whatever to get into the incision that's still closing up."
Jake Peavy, SP3/2/2014 10:51:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Jake Peavy won't throw for at least three days after suffering a lacerated left index finger on Saturday. SOURCE: Scott Lauber, Boston Herald
Insight: Peavy was scratched from a Grapefruit League start after cutting his finger with a fishing knife. According to Boston manager John Farrell, Peavy "almost cut through his finger," so he may have to miss more than one start. The good news is that the injury was to his non-throwing hand. "The fact is, we can pad that index finger to his glove hand," Farrell said. "It's nowhere near the impact had it been the other hand."
Daniel Nava, LF2/28/2014 8:04:00 PM
Description: According to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald, Red Sox outfielder Daniel Nava (neck) will play Saturday.
Insight: Nava will be making his Grapefruit League debut after sitting out this week with a pinched nerve in his neck. The 31-year-old is coming off a season in which he batted .303 with 12 homers, 66 RBI, 77 runs and an .830 OPS in 134 games. He played primarily against lefties and will do so again this season.
Shane Victorino, RF2/27/2014 4:36:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino has been working through issues involving his "core strength," manager John Farrell said. However, he's expected to be ready well before Opening Day. SOURCE: Boston Herald
Insight: Farrell said Victorino reported to camp in good shape even though he underwent right thumb surgery in November. The 33-year-old outfielder dealt with several nagging injuries last season and only played 122 games, so the Red Sox are trying to avoid that happening again. Victorino hit .294 with 15 homers, 82 runs, 21 steals and an .802 OPS in his first year in Boston.
Grady Sizemore, CF2/27/2014 4:18:00 PM
Description: Red Sox outfielder Grady Sizemore played left field and went 0-for-2 in his first action since 2011.
Insight: The 31-year-old once posted a 30-30 season, but that was a lieftime ago - in 2008. It remains to be seen if he can help the Red Sox or fantasy owners this season.
Stephen Drew, SS2/26/2014 11:20:00 AM
Description: Stephen Drew's agent Scott Boras says that Drew would be willing to move to second base full-time for the right price. SOURCE: Max Wildstein, MLBlogs
Insight: Toronto and the Mets are considered the favorites to land Drew at this point, though an official signing may not come until the regular season is already underway. We've heard dozens of rumors about Drew (.253, 13 HR, 67 RBI) this offseason so take everything you hear with a grain of salt.
Mike Carp, 1B2/23/2014 7:26:00 PM
Description: Red Sox 1B/OF Mike Carp has been taking reps at third base during spring training. Carp played 29 games at first base last season and 43 at the two corner outfield positions. SOURCE: Providence Journal
Insight: Versatility is always nice and it could give Carp (.296, 9 HR, 43 RBI in 2013) more at bats, especially if the team winds up trading Will Middlebrooks. With that said, the Red Sox contemplated a similar conversion with Mike Napoli last year and never went through with it. Until we actually see Carp play third base in a game, his fantasy value shouldn't change.
Chris Capuano, SP2/20/2014 7:42:00 PM
Description: Chris Capuano's new one-year deal with the Red Sox is worth $2.25 million. SOURCE: Ron Chimelis, Springfield Republican
Insight: With Ryan Dempster taking the year off, Capuano (4-7, 4.26 ERA) will function as the team's primary long reliever. He'll be worth an add if one of Boston's starters gets hurt.
Ryan Dempster, SP2/16/2014 6:18:00 PM
Description: Red Sox pitcher Ryan Dempster told reporters Sunday that he will not pitch in 2014, citing "physical reasons and his desire to spend more time with his kids." SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, foxsports.com.
Insight: Dempster had a 4.57 ERA in 171 1/3 innings last season after signing a two-year, $26.5 million contract with Boston. He'll be placed on the restricted list and won't receive the $13.25 million he was slated to earn in 2014. The Sox will go with Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, John Lackey, Jake Peavy and Felix Doubront in the rotation unless they sign a replacement with the money Dempster vacated.
Jake Peavy, SP2/14/2014 1:50:00 PM
Description: Boston righthander Jake Peavy left spring training on Friday with both his wrist and ring finger wrapped in a bandage, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe.
Insight: Peavy hasn't been a fantasy stud since 2007, though he did pitch well last season, going 12-5 with 121 Ks in 144 2/3 IP. This injury shouldn't sideline him for more than a day or two.
Stephen Drew, SS2/5/2014 9:14:00 PM
Description: Despite their interest, the Mets aren't likely to sign shortstop Stephen Drew. SOURCE: Ken Davidoff, New York Post
Insight: Drew supposedly has two offers in place but is holding out for a three-year deal. With so few viable options at shortstop, the soft-hitting Drew (.264 career average) remains a fantasy consideration.
David Ortiz, DH2/2/2014 11:34:00 AM
Description: Veteran designated hitter David Ortiz has softened his demands after calling the Red Sox out during a television appearance last week. SOURCE: Rob Bradford, WEEI
Insight: Who is Papi kidding? He's not going anywhere. The reigning World Series MVP says all he's looking for is a one-year extension. The Red Sox don't want Ortiz (.309, 30 HR, 103 RBI in 2013) to leave either so we'd expect the two sides to come to an agreement sooner rather than later.
David Ortiz, DH1/27/2014 9:01:00 PM
Description: For the first time, Boston DH David Ortiz acknowledged that he could play elsewhere if the Red Sox don't honor his request for a multi-year contract. SOURCE: ESPN Boston
Insight: It may sound like Ortiz is being pushy but after winning the World Series MVP, he deserves to be compensated. We can't imagine Ortiz playing for another team and it's likely the two sides will work out a deal before Papi reaches free agency.
Stephen Drew, SS1/23/2014 7:12:00 PM
Description: According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Yankees haven't ruled out the possibility of signing shortstop Stephen Drew.
Insight: With Derek Jeter at shortstop, Drew would probably spend most of his time at second base if he went to New York. Drew put together a solid regular season (.253, 13 HR, 67 RBI) for the Red Sox in 2013 but was awful in the playoffs, collecting just six hits in 54 at bats (.111 AVG). For all his struggles at the plate, the 30-year-old has always been an excellent defensive player.
Jon Lester, SP1/23/2014 7:06:00 PM
Description: Boston lefthander Jon Lester acknowledged that he'd be willing to take a paycut to stay with the Red Sox. SOURCE: Gordon Edes, ESPN Boston
Insight: His contract expires after the 2014 season. We expect the two sides will have a new deal in place by the time spring training rolls around. Lester is coming off a resurgent 2013 campaign that included 15 wins and a 3.75 ERA in 213 1/3 innings. He was 4-1 with a 1.56 ERA in five postseason appearances.
Grady Sizemore, CF1/22/2014 7:47:00 PM
Description: In a surprise move, the Red Sox and outfielder Grady Sizemore have agreed to a one-year, $750,000 deal. SOURCE: Rob Bradford, WEEI
Insight: It's a major league deal, which means Sizemore could compete with Jackie Bradley Jr. for the starting center field job out of spring training. The 31-year-old used to steal tons of bases (38 in 2008) but he hasn't played in the big leagues since 2011. It will be interesting to see what he has left in the tank. We wouldn't rule Sizemore out as a fantasy option just yet.
Shane Victorino, RF12/16/2013 9:50:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino had thumb surgery on Monday. SOURCE: Alex Speier, WEEI
Insight: It won't affect Victorino's fantasy value as he's expected to be back in plenty of time for spring training. Victorino was excellent for the Red Sox last year, contributing a .294 average with 15 HR, 61 RBI and 21 SB. He also had a number of clutch hits in the postseason including a game-winning grand slam against the Tigers.
David Ortiz, DH12/13/2013 9:10:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox and DH David Ortiz are working on a contract extension that will allow him to retire in Boston. SOURCE: Rob Bradford, WEEI
Insight: Ortiz is entering the final year of a two-year contract. Even in his late 30s, Papi remains one of the game's most productive hitters. Last season he led the majors in intentional walks (27).
Shane Victorino, RF12/10/2013 9:21:00 PM
Description: Boston manager John Farrell said Daniel Nava and Shane Victorino will both be candidates to lead off next season. SOURCE: Mike Silverman, Boston Herald
Insight: Jacoby Ellsbury had been the team's leadoff hitter for the previous six seasons but he signed with New York last week. Victorino hit .194 out of the leadoff spot last season (7-for-36) while Nava hit .289 (11-for-38). Dustin Pedroia will stay in the three hole for Boston with David Ortiz occupying the cleanup spot.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B12/10/2013 9:05:00 AM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia (torn UCL) had the pin removed from his thumb surgery and should be ready for spring training, according to a Boston Globe report.
Insight: Pedroia is a key player in the Red Sox lineup. He batted .301 with 91 runs, 84 RBI and 17 steals. With Ellsbury gone it will be even more important to have him ready for opening day.
Edward Mujica, RP12/7/2013 9:20:00 PM
Description: Righthanded reliever Edward Mujica has agreed to a two-year, $9.5 million contract with Boston. SOURCE: Jeff Passan, Yahoo Sports
Insight: Mujica got off to a nice start last season (2.20 ERA, 26 saves before the All-Star break) but fell apart in the second half (11.05 ERA in September). If he returns to his pre-All-Star break form, he'll be a solid addition to what is already one of the stronger bullpens in the major leagues. Mujica won't be a candidate to close unless Koji Uehara gets injured.
Mike Napoli, 1B12/6/2013 10:59:00 PM
Description: According to Sean McAdam of csnne.com, the Red Sox have re-signed first baseman Mike Napoli to a two-year deal worth $32 million.
Insight: We never expected Napoli to leave the Red Sox after he changed the clubhouse culture, ushered in the bearded brotherhood and brought a World Series title to Boston in his first season. Just remember he'll have significantly less fantasy value in 2014 because he won't be eligible at catcher after playing zero innings there in 2013.
A.J. Pierzynski, C12/3/2013 8:05:00 PM
Description: Veteran catcher A.J. Pierzynski has agreed to a one-year, $8.25 million deal with Boston. SOURCE: Buster Olney, ESPN
Insight: It's a nice haul for the soon-to-be 37-year-old. Pierzynski could be a liability defensively but he rarely gets injured and his .283 lifetime batting average is extremely impressive for a player at his position. The Pierzynski signing marks the end of the Jarrod Saltalamacchia Era in Boston.
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF11/27/2013 2:07:00 PM
Description: ESPN's Jim Bowden suspects free agent outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury will re-sign with Boston.
Insight: If Ellsbury can get a seven-year deal from Washington or Texas, he'll take it. However, it's unlikely that any team would offer him that many years and Bowden seems to believe Ellsbury would be willing to give Boston at least a little bit of a hometown discount. If Boston decides the price to keep Ellsbury is too high, they'll probably opt to use Jackie Bradley in center field next season.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, CCold11/27/2013 1:00:00 PM
Description: If the Red Sox want to keep Jarrod Saltalamacchia, they may have to wait in line. The free agent catcher is also being pursued by the Blue Jays, Rockies and Twins according to NESN's Jen Slothower.
Insight: Boston struck out with Carlos Ruiz (re-signed with Philadelphia) and Brian McCann (Yankees), which leaves Salty and veteran A.J. Pierzynski as the top catchers left on the market. The Twins are in the running because they've decided to make Joe Mauer a full-time first baseman. Saltalamacchia (.273, 14 HR, 65 RBI) had his moments in 2013 but inconsistency caused him to lose his starting job to David Ross in the postseason.
Alfredo Aceves, SP11/16/2013 11:07:00 AM
Description: The Mets could make a play for free agent righthander Alfredo Aceves. SOURCE: Buster Olney, ESPN
Insight: Aceves wore out his welcome in Boston but at age 31, he still has a few years left to prove himself. If the Mets do end up signing Aceves, it will be interesting to see if they employ him as a starter or out of the bullpen. Though Aceves' preference is to start, his best season came in 2011 when he was used almost exclusively as a middle reliever (10-2, 2.61 ERA in 114 innings).
Mike Napoli, 1B11/16/2013 11:03:00 AM
Description: The Rockies and Rangers are among the teams lining up to sign Mike Napoli. SOURCE: Buster Olney, ESPN
Insight: Napoli was a health risk heading into the 2013 season but he improved his stock dramatically by having a sparkling year both at the plate and in the field. He's also a clubhouse leader, which should play well as he looks for a multi-year deal. Despite the interest Napoli is getting from other teams, we still expect him to be back with the Red Sox next season.
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF11/13/2013 9:49:00 PM
Description: Agent Scott Boras is using Carl Crawford's seven-year, $142 million deal as the benchmark for Jacoby Ellsbury's next contract. SOURCE: NESN
Insight: Somebody is bound to overpay for Ellsbury after his monster 2013 campaign (.298 AVG, 52 steals). According to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, that price tag is a little too high for the Mariners, who claim they have "no interest" in Ellsbury. Feinsand mentioned the Cubs as a possible dark horse candidate in the Ellsbury sweepstakes.
Mike Napoli, 1B11/6/2013 3:04:00 PM
Description: The Mariners could be in the running for free agent first baseman Mike Napoli this offseason. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: Napoli would be an upgrade over Seattle's current first baseman Justin Smoak (.238, 20 HR, 50 RBI). Still, after the season he just had with the Red Sox, it's hard to envision Napoli (.259, 23 HR, 92 RBI) playing anywhere else besides Boston.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B11/6/2013 10:16:00 AM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia (torn UCL) expects to have thumb surgery next Tuesday. SOURCE: ESPN Boston
Insight: The procedure could sideline him for up to eight weeks. The possibility of missing spring training games isn't a concern for Pedroia at this point.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B11/1/2013 9:16:00 PM
Description: Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia will have surgery on his left thumb sometime in the next few weeks. SOURCE: Brian MacPherson, Providence Journal
Insight: Somehow, Pedroia managed to play 176 games between the playoffs and regular season with a torn thumb ligament. And he still won a Gold Glove and made the All-Star team. Who knows what kind of season Pedroia could have if he actually stayed healthy for once.
Clay Buchholz, SP10/30/2013 4:11:00 PM
Description: Boston righthander Clay Buchholz will be available out of the bullpen Wednesday in Game 6 against the Cardinals. SOURCE: Alex Speier, WEEI
Insight: He'll also be available for Game 7 if necessary. Buchholz tossed four innings of one-run ball Sunday night in Game 4. The one run he allowed was unearned.
David Ross, C10/30/2013 3:40:00 PM
Description: David Ross will get another start at catcher Wednesday in Game 6 of the World Series.
Insight: It appears he's overtaken Jarrod Saltalamacchia and will start the rest of the series. Ross delivered a huge hit in Game 5 to put Boston ahead 2-1 in the seventh inning. Overall, he's hitting .286 in the postseason with a .429 slugging percentage.
Mike Napoli, 1B10/30/2013 3:32:00 PM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli will hit cleanup Wednesday in Game 6 against the Cardinals.
Insight: It's his first start since Game 2 last Thursday. Napoli went 0-for-2 against Michael Wacha when he faced him earlier in the series.
Shane Victorino, RF10/30/2013 3:28:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino is back in the lineup for Game 6 against St. Louis.
Insight: He missed the previous two games with back tightness. Victorino is hitting sixth behind Jonny Gomes and ahead of Xander Bogaerts instead of second where he usually hits. Victorino was named the AL's Gold Glove recipient in right field earlier this week.
Shane Victorino, RFCold10/29/2013 6:43:00 PM
Description: Bill Shaikin of the LA Times reports Boston right fielder Shane Victorino is expected to play Wednesday in Game 6 against St. Louis.
Insight: Victorino missed Games 4 and 5 with a back issue. Aside from a series-clinching grand slam against Detroit, the veteran has had a quiet postseason (.188 AVG in 48 at bats).
Shane Victorino, RF10/28/2013 6:45:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino (back) is not in the lineup for Game 5 of the World Series Monday at St. Louis but is available off the bench, according to Tim Britton of the Providence Journal.
Insight: Daniel Nava will start in right field with Jonny Gomes in left for the second straight game.
David Ortiz, DHHot10/28/2013 12:48:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz will start at first base in Game 5 of the World Series Saturday in St. Louis.
Insight: Considering how he's pounding the ball, there was no decision to be made. When you are batting a stunning .727 with a 2.114 OPS you play - period. Mike Napoli, who has been taking a few ground balls at third base, will come off the bench.
Shane Victorino, RF10/27/2013 7:17:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino has been scratched from Sunday night's starting lineup. SOURCE: Gordon Edes, ESPN Boston
Insight: Victorino is out with lower back tightness. Daniel Nava will move over to right field with Jonny Gomes getting the start in left. It's unknown if the ailing Victorino will be available to pinch-hit later in the game.
Daniel Nava, LF10/27/2013 6:04:00 PM
Description: Daniel Nava will again get the start in left field Sunday against the Cardinals.
Insight: Nava went 1-for-4 in Game 3 with a couple of RBI. The 30-year-old finished eighth in the American League with a .303 average during the regular season.
David Ross, C10/27/2013 6:01:00 PM
Description: David Ross will be back behind the plate Sunday versus the Cardinals.
Insight: Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been useless at the plate this postseason (.188 AVG in 32 at bats) and he's also made a number of critical mistakes in the field. Look for Ross to also start Game 5 when Jon Lester returns to the mound.
Stephen Drew, SSCold10/27/2013 11:04:00 AM
Description: It appears John Farrell has finally seen enough. The Red Sox skipper benched slumping shortstop Stephen Drew for Will Middlebrooks late in Saturday's loss to St. Louis.
Insight: Drew has given the Red Sox nothing at the plate (4-for-44 in the playoffs) and has only been playing because of his strong glove work at shortstop. With Boston's season on the line, the Red Sox don't have time to wait for Drew to turn things around offensively. Middlebrooks is likely to start at third for Game 4 with rookie Xander Bogaerts filling in for Drew at shortstop.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, CCold10/27/2013 10:58:00 AM
Description: Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia sealed Boston's fate by delivering a poor throw to third base late in Saturday's loss to St. Louis.
Insight: Will Middlebrooks was charged with the error but the throw was one that never should have been made. Saltalamacchia's poor defense also contributed to a loss two nights earlier back at Fenway Park (he mishandled a throw from left fielder Jonny Gomes, which led to a pair of runs). Salty's poor play in the field could be overlooked if he was hitting but he's not doing that either (.188 AVG in 32 postseason at bats). Look for David Ross to sub in for the struggling Saltalamacchia Sunday in Game 4.
Jake Peavy, SPCold10/27/2013 10:53:00 AM
Description: Boston starter Jake Peavy struggled in a no-decision Saturday versus St. Louis.
Insight: Peavy allowed six hits and two earned runs in just four innings of work. He seemed to have no trust at all in his fastball, opting mostly for breaking pitches after barely surviving a two-run, four-hit first inning. As shaky as Peavy looked in the outing, it could have been much worse. Somehow the righthander was able to navigate his way out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth inning. He's scheduled to start Game 7 if the series goes that far though his last two performances have done little to inspire confidence.
Craig Breslow, RPCold10/27/2013 10:39:00 AM
Description: Boston reliever Craig Breslow imploded for the second straight game Saturday night against the Cardinals.
Insight: Breslow failed to record an out in the seventh inning and was later charged with two runs after Junichi Tazawa allowed a double to Matt Holliday later in the frame. Breslow's latest nightmare performance comes just two days after blowing a save in Game 2. It will be interesting to see what John Farrell decides to do with his bullpen in Game 4 Sunday night in St. Louis.
Mike Napoli, 1B10/26/2013 6:31:00 PM
Description: Mike Napoli, who has never played third base in a major league game, was seen taking grounders at that position Saturday during batting practice.
Insight: When asked about it, Red Sox manager John Farrell said, "Not tonight, but it's an option." It's a risky maneuver given Napoli's lack of experience at that position but having his bat in the lineup would give the Red Sox a huge leg up offensively. Napoli has been benched in favor of David Ortiz for Saturday's Game 3 in St. Louis. Ortiz, usually a DH, will be making his seventh start of the year at first base.
Clay Buchholz, SP10/26/2013 5:39:00 PM
Description: Clay Buchholz won't be at 100 percent when he makes his scheduled start Sunday against St. Louis. SOURCE: Jayson Stark, ESPN
Insight: Buchholz, a Cy Young contender early in the season, saw his velocity decline rapidly in his last start Saturday against Detroit. If his outing gets cut short, Felix Doubront may have to eat up a few innings before Boston can turn it over to the bullpen trio of Craig Breslow, Junichi Tazawa and Koji Uehara in the later innings.
Mike Napoli, 1B10/26/2013 5:34:00 PM
Description: As expected, Mike Napoli won't start Saturday's Game 3 against St. Louis.
Insight: Napoli has had a decent postseason offensively (2 HR, 6 RBI) but David Ortiz is far too valuable a hitter to not be in the lineup. There's a strong chance Napoli will get a chance to pinch-hit later in the contest.
Clay Buchholz, SP10/25/2013 9:13:00 PM
Description: Boston manager John Farrell confirmed that Clay Buchholz will start Game 4 of the World Series Sunday at St. Louis, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe.
Insight: Buchholz admitted that he's dealing with general arm fatigue and looked "uncomfortable" while throwing off flat ground Thursday, but he'll try to get through one more start this season. He'll oppose Lance Lynn after Jake Peavy and Joe Kelly square off in Game 3 Saturday.
David Ortiz, DHHot10/25/2013 9:07:00 PM
Description: Red Sox manager John Farrell confirmed that David Ortiz will start at first base in Game 3 of the World Series Saturday in St. Louis, according to Scott Miller of CBSSports.com.
Insight: Ortiz went 4-for-7 (.571) with a pair of home runs and five RBI in the first two games of the series (he also had a grand slam robbed by Carlos Beltran in Game 1). Mike Napoli will move to the bench in Game 3.
Daniel Nava, LF10/25/2013 6:41:00 PM
Description: Daniel Nava will start in left field for the Red Sox in Game 3 of the World Series against the Cardinals, according to Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com.
Insight: Jonny Gomes started the first two games of the series but Busch Stadium's left field is much more demanding than Fenway Park's. With right-hander Joe Kelly on the mound for the Cardinals, it's a no-brainer to start the lefty-swinging Nava and have Gomes available to pinch-hit against a lefty reliever.
David Ortiz, DHHot10/25/2013 10:07:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz figures to be the starting 1B when the World Series shifts to St. Louis for Game 3.
Insight: Ortiz is 4-for-7 (.571) with a pair of home runs and five RBI in the first two games of the series and no manager in his right mind would leave his best hitter on the bench. He started at first base six times during the season. Mike Napoli will likely move to the bench.
Mike Napoli, 1B10/25/2013 10:03:00 AM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli will likely be the odd man out when the series shifts to St. Louis for Game 3.
Insight: There is no way the Red Sox starting lineup doesn't include the hot-hitting David Ortiz (4-for-7, 2 HR in the first two games). Napoli is a former catcher, but didn't start a single game at that position in 2013 so it would be unfair to put him behind the plate in a World Series game.
Jake Peavy, SP10/24/2013 7:13:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox will turn to Jake Peavy Saturday when the series shifts to St. Louis.
Insight: Clay Buchholz is being pushed back a day due to arm fatigue. Peavy is winless in four career postseasons starts (0-3, 10.31 ERA).
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C10/24/2013 7:01:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is back in the lineup after sitting out Game 1 Wednesday night.
Insight: David Ross has been catching all of Jon Lester's starts, so it wasn't a surprise to see Salty on the sidelines yesterday. He's never faced tonight's starting pitcher Michael Wacha.
David Ortiz, DH10/24/2013 11:05:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH/1B David Ortiz produced big numbers in Game 1 of the World Series after struggling against Detroit in the ALCS.
Insight: Ortiz rebounded from a .091 ALCS (2-for-22) by matching that hit total in the opener. It will be interesting to see what happens when the series moves to St. Louis and there is no DH as the team's everyday first baseman, Mike Napoli, knocked in three runs in the opener and was clutch in the ALCS.
Clay Buchholz, SP10/23/2013 10:03:00 PM
Description: Boston manager John Farrell said Clay Buchholz is "ready to go" for the World Series. The right-hander will start Game 3 or 4. SOURCE: Rob Bradford, WEEI.com
Insight: WEEI.com reported Wednesday morning that Buchholz may be dealing with a physical issue, but it appears the team expects him to start one of the first two games in St. Louis. Jake Peavy will start the other game.
Jonny Gomes, LF10/23/2013 4:26:00 PM
Description: As expected, Jonny Gomes is getting the start in left field Wednesday in Game 1 against St. Louis.
Insight: Gomes has outperformed Daniel Nava this postseason and should be the team's starter in left field for the forseeable future. The 32-year-old is 2-for-10 in his career against tonight's starter Adam Wainwright.
Xander Bogaerts, SS10/23/2013 4:23:00 PM
Description: Rookie Xander Bogaerts will make another start at third base for the Red Sox in Game 1 of the World Series.
Insight: Bogaerts (3-for-6, seven runs in six playoff games) appears to be locked in as Boston's third baseman for the rest of the postseason. Will Middlebrooks will probably be limited to pinch-hitting duty.
David Ross, C10/23/2013 4:19:00 PM
Description: David Ross will get the start at catcher for Game 1 of the World Series Wednesday night at Fenway Park.
Insight: This was to be expected as Ross has now caught three of Jon Lester's four postseason starts. If the Red Sox find themselves in a hole and need offense later in the game, Jarrod Saltalamacchia will be available to replace Ross off the bench.
Stephen Drew, SSCold10/23/2013 10:25:00 AM
Description: Boston shortstop Stephen Drew has had a terrible postseason (3-for-35) and Wednesday's matchup with Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright probably won't help matters.
Insight: Drew, a former Diamondback, has faced Wainwright on numerous occasions with very little success (2-for-19). Despite his woes at the plate, the Red Sox are likely to keep Drew in the lineup because of his stellar glovework at shortstop.
Clay Buchholz, SP10/23/2013 9:47:00 AM
Description: The feeling around Boston is that star righthander Clay Buchholz may not be healthy. SOURCE: Rob Bradford, WEEI
Insight: Buchholz has looked rather ordinary since coming back from a shoulder injury (3-1, 3.32 ERA in seven starts compared to 9-0, 1.71 before the injury) and it's fair to wonder if the Red Sox brought him back too soon. The two-time All-Star is slated to start one of the games in St. Louis though Felix Doubront will be on call if the Red Sox need to scratch Buchholz at the last minute.
Jon Lester, SP10/21/2013 8:22:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have named Jon Lester their Game 1 starter for Wednesday's World Series opener. SOURCE: Danny Knobler, CBS Sports
Insight: Lester, the winner of Thursday's Game 5 in Detroit, will be pitching on six days rest. He's 2-1 this postseason with a 2.33 ERA in 19 1/3 innings.
David Ortiz, DH10/21/2013 8:11:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox will go with David Ortiz at first base when the World Series shifts to St. Louis for Games 3-5. SOURCE: Scott Lauber, Boston Herald
Insight: Boston's usual first baseman, Mike Napoli, should make a few late inning cameos. Ortiz played first base just six times during the regular season.
Jonny Gomes, LF10/21/2013 8:02:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox are likely to start Jonny Gomes in left field Wednesday in Game 1 of the World Series. SOURCE: Boston Herald
Insight: Gomes appeared in five of the team's six games against Detroit in the ALCS. Daniel Nava, who platooned with Gomes in left field during the regular season, could draw a start or two later in the series.
Koji Uehara, RPHot10/20/2013 10:53:00 AM
Description: Red Sox closer Koji Uehara won the ALCS MVP after throwing six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and zero walks over five appearances during the series.
Insight: Uehara was expected to be the team's seventh-inning man this season with Andrew Bailey throwing in the eighth and Joel Hanrahan closing. When Bailey and Hanrahan went down with injuries, Uehara stepped into the closer role and ended the season with 21 saves, a 1.09 ERA, a 0.57 WHIP, 101 strikeouts and just nine walks in 74 1/3 innings. In eight postseason appearances, he has a 1.00 ERA, a 0.56 WHIP, a 13/0 K/BB and five saves in nine innings.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C10/19/2013 11:19:00 AM
Description: Boston catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has a good track record against Max Scherzer.
Insight: He's hitting .417 against him in 12 at bats. Saltalamacchia (.273 AVG this postseason) sat out Game 5 but he should be back in there on Saturday.
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF10/19/2013 11:17:00 AM
Description: Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury faces off against Max Scherzer in Game 6, a pitcher he's had good success against in the past.
Insight: Ellsbury is 5-for-9 against him in the regular season though he went 0-for-2 against Scherzer in Game 2 last Saturday. Ellsbury has had a decent series with six hits in 19 at bats (.316 AVG).
David Ortiz, DHCold10/19/2013 11:12:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz only has two hits in the ALCS but he could be in for a big night Saturday against Max Scherzer.
Insight: Somehow, Papi is hitting .467 against the soon-to-be AL Cy Young winner. He hasn't driven in a run since Game 2 when he knocked Joaquin Benoit's first-pitch offfering out of the park for a game-tying grand slam.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C10/19/2013 10:02:00 AM
Description: The Red Sox haven't released their lineup for Game 6 yet but all indications are that catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia will be in it. SOURCE: Erik Boland, Newsday
Insight: David Ross got the start in Game 5 and actually did a great job with two hits and a bone-crushing takeout of Alex Avila at home plate. Still, Saltalamacchia is the better offensive player and deserves to be behind the plate for Saturday's potential series-clincher.
Xander Bogaerts, SS10/19/2013 9:58:00 AM
Description: The Red Sox are expected to start Xander Bogaerts at third base again in Game 6. SOURCE: Erik Boland, Newsday
Insight: The rookie went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk Thursday in Game 5. He's been filling in for Will Middlebrooks, who has struggled offensively during the playoffs (.174 AVG in 23 at bats). Since shortstop is Bogaerts' natural position, Middlebrooks will probably come in as a defensive replacement if the Red Sox have a lead in the ninth inning.
Daniel Nava, LF10/17/2013 6:41:00 PM
Description: Boston left fielder Daniel Nava isn't starting Game 5 against the Tigers.
Insight: Nava went 1-for-3 in last night's 7-3 loss. There's a good chance he'll see action as a pinch-hitter later in the game.
Jonny Gomes, LF10/17/2013 6:39:00 PM
Description: Red Sox left fielder Jonny Gomes is back in the lineup for Game 5.
Insight: Gomes and Daniel Nava have been alternating starts in left field. Gomes' biggest contribution of the series came in Game 2 when he scored on Jarrod Saltalamacchia's game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C10/17/2013 6:27:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia won't be in the lineup for Thursday's Game 5 against the Tigers.
Insight: David Ross will start in his place. Salty is hitting .273 this postseason. That's the same batting average he carried during the regular season (.273 in 425 at bats).
David Ross, C10/17/2013 6:26:00 PM
Description: David Ross is in at catcher for Thursday's Game 5 against Detroit.
Insight: It's Ross' second start of the series. Ross has now started two of Jon Lester's three starts this postseason.
Will Middlebrooks, 3BCold10/17/2013 6:14:00 PM
Description: Boston will be without third baseman Will Middlebrooks on Thursday.
Insight: Manager John Farrell has benched him in favor of rookie Xander Bogaerts. It seems like the right move as Middlebrooks is hitting a mere .174 this postseason. Middlebrooks could be available as a pinch-hitter or defensive replacement if the Red Sox get desperate in the late innings.
Xander Bogaerts, SS10/17/2013 6:07:00 PM
Description: Boston's Xander Bogaerts will make his first start of the postseason Thursday against Detroit.
Insight: Bogaerts is in for third baseman Will Middlebrooks, who is just 1-for-10 in the series. The 21-year-old Bogaerts went 1-for-2 in last night's loss and has hit .261 since joining the Red Sox in mid-August.
Daniel Nava, LF10/16/2013 3:49:00 PM
Description: Daniel Nava is hitting sixth and starting in left field Wednesday against Detroit.
Insight: It's a no-brainer given Nava's history against Doug Fister (.417 career average). Jonny Gomes, Boston's starter in left field for Games 2 and 3, will take a seat in Game 4.
Daniel Nava, LF10/16/2013 11:12:00 AM
Description: Boston left fielder Daniel Nava hasn't played since Game 1 but if he does get the start in Game 4, he could post big numbers versus Tigers starter Doug Fister.
Insight: Nava is 5-for-12 in his career against Fister. He's had a quiet postseason, delivering just two hits in 11 trips to the plate (three walks).
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C10/16/2013 11:08:00 AM
Description: Jarrod Saltalamacchia rejuvenated the Red Sox with a game-winning hit in Game 2. Now he faces another favorable matchup Wednesday in Game 4.
Insight: Salty owns a .455 career average versus Tigers starter Doug Fister. A win today would put Boston in the driver's seat. The Red Sox currently lead the series two games to one.
Mike Napoli, 1B10/16/2013 9:38:00 AM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli homered for the only run of the night Tuesday in a Game 3 win over the Tigers.
Insight: The round-tripper came on a 96-mph fastball from Justin Verlander in the seventh, the same pitch Napoli struck out on two innings earlier. Napoli now has six home runs in 39 career postseason games.
John Lackey, SP10/16/2013 9:32:00 AM
Description: Red Sox starter John Lackey (6 2/3 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 8 K's, 0 BB) was outstanding Tuesday in a Game 3 win against the Tigers.
Insight: He outdueled Justin Verlander, which isn't an easy thing to do. Lackey got knocked around a bit in the first inning (two hits) but Boston catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia said the 20-minute delay after a brief power outage in the second gave him a chance to settle down and find his rhythm. Tuesday was Lackey's first career road playoff win. If the series goes seven, we'll see him against Sunday night at Fenway Park.
Shane Victorino, RF10/15/2013 10:49:00 AM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino is hitless in six at-bats against Detroit ace Justin Verlander.
Insight: Victorino went 6-for-14 (.429) with three RBI in the ALDS against Oakland, but is just 1-for-8 in the first two games of the ALCS.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B10/15/2013 10:46:00 AM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia is just 1-for-18 (.056) against Detroit right-hander Justin Verlander.
Insight: Pedroia finished the season batting .301 and is 6-for-23 in the postseason with three runs scored and six RBI. This matchup, however, is extremely unfavorable.
David Ortiz, DHHot10/15/2013 10:42:00 AM
Description: Boston DH David Ortiz is a career .370 hitter (10-for-27) with two home runs and a 1.174 OPS against Detroit right-hander Justin Verlander.
Insight: Big Papi put together a solid September and has continued to swing a big bat in the postseason going 6-for-20 with three long balls and seven RBI. He's one of the few players who apparently doesn't mind facing the Tigers' ace.
Mike Napoli, 1BCold10/14/2013 5:47:00 PM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli is expected to be in the lineup Tuesday against Detroit after coming off the bench in Game 2. SOURCE: Brian MacPherson, Providence Journal
Insight: Napoli entered the game in the eighth inning last night and struck out in his only at bat. The power-hitting first baseman is hitting .222 in his career against Tigers righthander Justin Verlander.
Jonny Gomes, LF10/13/2013 10:24:00 AM
Description: Jonny Gomes is expected to start in left field Sunday in Game 2 against the Tigers. SOURCE: Drew Silva, NBC Sports
Insight: Gomes started the first two games of the Division Series against Tampa Bay but has been limited to pinch-hitting duty since then. He'll get the nod over Daniel Nava, who went 1-for-3 in last night's 1-0 loss.
Mike Carp, 1B10/13/2013 10:21:00 AM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Carp is expected to make his first start of the postseason Sunday in Game 2 against Detroit. SOURCE: Drew Silva, NBC Sports
Insight: Carp has played sparingly during the playoffs but with Mike Napoli in the midst of a wicked slump (two for his last 16), the Red Sox are running out of options at first base. Carp is 2-for-8 in his career against tonight's starter Max Scherzer.
Daniel Nava, LF10/13/2013 10:18:00 AM
Description: Red Sox left fielder Daniel Nava isn't expected to start Sunday against the Tigers. SOURCE: WEEI
Insight: Nava was actually the only player to have a hit against Detroit in Game 1. He'll take a seat in favor of Johnny Gomes, who holds a .333 lifetime average versus Max Scherzer.
Mike Napoli, 1BCold10/13/2013 10:08:00 AM
Description: Struggling Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli won't start Sunday in Game 2 against the Tigers. SOURCE: WEEI
Insight: Napoli had an awful game Saturday (0-for-3, 3 K's) and is now hitting just .125 in his first five postseason games. Napoli's .111 career average against tonight's starter Max Scherzer makes John Farrell's decision to sit him that much easier. Mike Carp is expected to start at first base.
Jon Lester, SP10/13/2013 10:06:00 AM
Description: Jon Lester was terrific Saturday in a loss to Detroit.
Insight: Lester did everything he could to keep the Red Sox in the game, allowing just one run in 6 1/3 innings. Boston's bats never woke up, however, and now the Sox head into Game 2 Sunday night with ground to make up. The lefthander is tentatively scheduled to start Game 5 on Thursday, assuming there is one.
Mike Napoli, 1BCold10/13/2013 9:32:00 AM
Description: First baseman Mike Napoli is just 1-for-9 against Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer with three strikeouts.
Insight: It's been feast or famine for Napoli, who bashed 23 homers this season, but also struck out 187 times. Against Scherzer its more likely famine. Napoli is just 2-for-16 in this postseason. Avoid.
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF10/13/2013 9:28:00 AM
Description: Boston outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury is 5-for-9 (.556) with a home run and five RBI against Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer.
Insight: Ellsbury was a force in the Tampa Bay series (9-for-18 with seven runs scored), but couldn't do much against Detroit in the ALCS opener going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Perhaps this favorable matchup will help.
David Ortiz, DH10/13/2013 9:24:00 AM
Description: Boston DH David Ortiz is a career .467 hitter (7-for-15) with three home run and a 1.689 OPS against Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer.
Insight: Big Papi put together a solid September and has continued to swing a big bat in the postseason going 5-for-17 with a double and two homers. This is a favorable matchup.
Jake Peavy, SP10/12/2013 7:05:00 PM
Description: Boston righthander Jake Peavy will be available out of the bullpen Saturday in Game 1 of the ALCS. SOURCE: Gordon Edes, ESPN Boston
Insight: Peavy pitched Game 4 of the Division Series versus Tampa Bay and is slated to start Game 4 of this series as well. Peavy has only made one relief appearance in 12 major league seasons.
Shane Victorino, RFHot10/12/2013 9:31:00 AM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino has faced Anibal Sanchez, Detroit's Game 1 ALCS starter, 43 times and come away with just 10 hits (.233).
Insight: Victorino went 6-for-14 (.429) with three RBI in the ALDS against Oakland, but he hasn't had success against Sanchez. The two squared off frequently when Sanchez pitched for the Marlins and Victorino played for the Phillies.
Jon Lester, SP10/10/2013 3:36:00 PM
Description: Jon Lester will get the call Saturday in Game 1 of the ALCS. SOURCE: Boston Globe
Insight: He'll be facing the winner of tonight's Tigers/A's game. Including the playoffs, Lester is 6-2 with a 2.74 ERA since August 1st.
Will Middlebrooks, 3BCold10/8/2013 10:37:00 AM
Description: Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks is 1-for-12 with eight strikeouts against Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson.
Insight: Don't be surprised if he gets the night off, but if he doesn't then you should avoid this unfavorable matchup.
Mike Napoli, 1B10/8/2013 10:35:00 AM
Description: First baseman Mike Napoli is just 1-for-12 against Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson with five strikeouts.
Insight: It's been feast or famine for Napoli, who bashed 23 homers this season, but also struck out 187 times. Against Hellickson its more likely famine.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, CHot10/8/2013 10:32:00 AM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is a career .320 hitter with three long balls and a 1.233 OPS against Tampa Bay Game 4 starter Jeremy Hellickson.
Insight: Saltalamacchia (.273, 14 HR, 65 RBI) is 3-for-8 with three RBI in the two games he's played against Tampa Bay this postseason.
David Ortiz, DHHot10/8/2013 10:30:00 AM
Description: Boston DH David Ortiz is a career .375 hitter (6-for-13) with three home run and a 1.391 OPS versus Rays right-hander Jeremy Hellickson.
Insight: Big Papi put together a solid September (.293, 6 HR, 21 RBI, .992 OPS) and became the second Red Sox player in history to record seven 30 HR/100 RBI seasons. He's continued to swing a big bat in the postseason going 4-for-9 with a double and two homers in the first three games of the series. He's a must start.
Shane Victorino, RFHot10/7/2013 11:16:00 AM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino is 4-for-11 with three doubles versus Rays right-hander Alex Cobb.
Insight: Victorino, who has struggled with nagging injuries for most of this season, hasn't let them spoil hie postseason as he's 4-for-8 in the first two games of the series.
Daniel Nava, LF10/6/2013 7:11:00 PM
Description: Boston left fielder Daniel Nava is expected to start Monday in Game 3 of the ALDS versus Tampa Bay.
Insight: Jonny Gomes (.247, 13 HR, 52 RBI) has started the first two games with lefties Matt Moore and David Price on the mound. Nava hit .303 with 12 homers, 66 RBI, 77 runs and an .831 OPS in 134 games this season.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C10/5/2013 4:00:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia isn't starting Saturday against Tampa Bay.
Insight: Backup David Ross is a much better hitter against David Price (.400 lifetime AVG) so he got the nod instead. Saltalamacchia (.273, 14 HR, 65 RBI) should be a go for Game 3 on Monday.
Daniel Nava, LF10/5/2013 3:58:00 PM
Description: Boston left fielder Daniel Nava won't start Saturday against the Rays.
Insight: Jonny Gomes (.247, 13 HR, 52 RBI) will start in left field for the second game in a row. Gomes usually starts against lefties so this was to be expected. Nava should see more playing time when the series returns to Tampa Bay.
David Ross, C10/5/2013 11:41:00 AM
Description: Boston catcher David Ross is expected to start behind the plate Saturday against the Rays.
Insight: It makes sense as Jarrod Saltalamacchia is hitting just .071 in his career against David Price. Ross has three hits in seven career postseason at bats.
Daniel Nava, LF10/5/2013 11:05:00 AM
Description: Red Sox left fielder Daniel Nava has been dismal against Rays ace David Price in 20 lifetime at bats (just two hits).
Insight: Nava, a natural lefthander who switch-hits, isn't nearly as strong from the right side of the plate (.252 in 119 at bats compared to .322 batting lefty). Jonny Gomes is likely to get the start in left field for Game 2.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C10/5/2013 10:59:00 AM
Description: Boston catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia probably won't have much success Saturday against David Price. He's only an .071 lifetime hitter versus the Rays lefthander.
Insight: Salty had a huge game on Friday (2-for-4, 2B, BB, 3 RBI) but he's unlikely to repeat the effort Saturday with Price pitching for Tampa Bay. Price is 10-6 against the Red Sox in his career including 2-2 this season (2.48 ERA in 32 2/3 innings).
Stephen Drew, SS10/5/2013 10:56:00 AM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew is hitless in ten career at bats against Tampa Bay starter David Price.
Insight: It shouldn't come as much of a surprise as Drew traditionally struggles against lefthanded pitching (.196 AVG in 153 at bats versus lefthanders this season). Drew had one hit in Friday's playoff opener.
Mike Napoli, 1B10/5/2013 10:50:00 AM
Description: Fifteen of Mike Napoli's 27 career at bats against Rays lefthander David Price have resulted in strikeouts.
Insight: It's been feast or famine for Napoli, a .259 lifeftime hitter against Price. Either he gets all of it or none of it. Yesterday, he went 1-for-4 with a double and a walk in Boston's Game 1 victory. Napoli is a .271 career hitter in the postseason (5 HR, 20 RBI in 96 at bats).
Jon Lester, SP10/5/2013 9:01:00 AM
Description: Jon Lester was outstanding Friday in a lopsided win over the Rays.
Insight: The Red Sox lefty went 7 2/3 innings for the victory, walking three with seven strikeouts. Two of the three hits he allowed were homers (one by Sean Rodriguez and one by Ben Zobrist) but both were solo shots. Friday was Lester's first postseason win in over five years (October 1, 2008 against the Angels).
Shane Victorino, RF10/4/2013 10:05:00 AM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino is hitless in seven at-bats versus Rays starter Matt Moore.
Insight: Victorino struggled with nagging injuries this season, but was solid after the All-Star break with 11 homers, 37 RBI, 10 SB and an .864 OPS in the second half. This matchup, however, doesn't appear to be of his liking.
David Ortiz, DHHot10/4/2013 10:02:00 AM
Description: Boston DH David Ortiz is a career .462 hitter (6-for-13) with a home run and a 1.346 OPS versus Rays left-hander Matt Moore.
Insight: Big Papi put together a solid September (.293, 6 HR, 21 RBI, .992 OPS) and became the second Red Sox player in history to record seven 30 HR/100 RBI seasons. Start him.
Jon Lester, SP9/30/2013 9:24:00 PM
Description: According to a WEEI report, the Red Sox are likely to go with Jon Lester in Game 1 of the Division Series.
Insight: It's an easy choice as Lester (15-8, 3.75 ERA) was far and away Boston's best pitcher in the second half. John Lackey is likely to start Game 2 with either Jake Peavy or Clay Buchholz starting Game 3. The Red Sox will face the winner of Wednesday's Wild Card game in Cleveland.
David Ortiz, DH9/29/2013 10:32:00 AM
Description: Boston DH David Ortiz is back in the lineup Sunday for the team's regular season finale. SOURCE: Jenny Dell, NESN
Insight: He took a breather on Saturday. Earlier this week, Papi became the second Red Sox player in history to record seven 30 HR/100 RBI seasons. Ortiz's RBI total this season (103) is his highest since 2007.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B9/29/2013 10:26:00 AM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia won't suit up Sunday against Baltimore.
Insight: It's only the second game Pedroia has missed this season. He'll finish 2013 with a .301 average in 641 at bats. Veteran John McDonald is getting the start at second base.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, CHot9/29/2013 10:26:00 AM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has a tough matchup in the regular season finale.
Insight: He'll face Orioles starter Chris Tillman, a pitcher he has gone 2-for-19 against with seven strikeouts. However, Saltalamacchia is also 15-for-37 (.405) with five doubles, three homers and 11 RBI over his last 10 games, so you'll probably want to leave him in the lineup Sunday. The catcher has hit .272 with 40 two-baggers, 14 homers, 65 RBI and an .803 OPS this season.
John Lackey, SP9/29/2013 10:23:00 AM
Description: Boston righthander John Lackey has been scratched from his start Sunday against the Orioles. SOURCE: Brian MacPherson, Providence Journal
Insight: Rookie Allen Webster will start instead. Now that the Red Sox have clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs, there's no use in wasting Lackey (10-13, 3.52 ERA) in a meaningless game. He's sure to be a part of Boston's playoff rotation.
Shane Victorino, RF9/29/2013 10:19:00 AM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino is getting the day off Sunday versus the Orioles. SOURCE: Jenny Dell, NESN

Daniel Nava, LF9/28/2013 10:30:00 PM
Description: Boston left fielder Daniel Nava went 4-for-4 Saturday in a loss to Baltimore.
Insight: It's Nava's second four-hit game in the last two weeks. Nava's .303 average this season is eighth-best in the American League.
Dustin Pedroia, 2BHot9/28/2013 10:59:00 AM
Description: Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is 9-for-16 (.563) with four doubles against Orioles starter Wei-Yin Chen.
Insight: Pedroia has hit just nine home runs this season but otherwise has had a typical year for him, batting .299 with 83 RBI, 90 runs and 17 steals. He's a must-start Saturday against Chen.
David Ortiz, DH9/27/2013 10:29:00 PM
Description: With a home run Friday against the Orioles, Red Sox DH David Ortiz reached 30 for the first time since 2010.
Insight: He hit the 100-RBI mark for the first time since 2010 on Wednesday and added three more Friday night while going 2-for-5. The veteran slugger has hit .308 with a .960 OPS this season.
Mike Napoli, 1B9/27/2013 9:47:00 AM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli is 11-for-27 (.407) with a pair of homers and a 1.096 OPS against Baltimore starter Scott Feldman.
Insight: He's been sitting out with plantar fasciitis, but is expected back Friday. Napoli has produced a career-high 90 RBI in 136 games this season.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, CHot9/26/2013 12:09:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has hit .424 (14-for-33) with three homers and 10 RBI over his last nine games.
Insight: This stretch has followed a 0-for-20 slump. Boston is expected to face two right-handers at Baltimore in its final series of the season, and Salty is hitting .292 with 12 homers and an .872 OPS against righties this season.
Mike Napoli, 1B9/25/2013 8:05:00 PM

Jacoby Ellsbury, CF9/25/2013 8:03:00 PM
Description: According to the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo, Jacoby Ellsbury is going to play five innings in center field tonight against the Rockies.
Insight: Wednesday will be Ellsbury's first game in three weeks after missing time with a fractured foot. Jackie Bradley Jr. is the most likely candidate to replace Ellsbury in center field when he comes out of the game.
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF9/25/2013 6:05:00 PM
Description: Boston center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury has returned to the starting lineup.
Insight: He'll bat leadoff Wednesday against the Rockies. Ellsbury (.299, 8 HR, 52 RBI) had missed the last 16 games with a compression fracture in his right foot. It will be interesting to see if the injury affects Ellsbury on the base paths (52 steals on 56 attempts this season).
Mike Napoli, 1B9/25/2013 5:59:00 PM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli will miss another game Wednesday versus Colorado.
Insight: With Boston playing in a National League park, the DH spot will be unavailable. Napoli probably wouldn't have played anyway as he's been battling a foot injury. David Ortiz (.307, 29 HR, 98 RBI) will make his sixth start of the season at first base.
Mike Napoli, 1B9/24/2013 5:29:00 PM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli is out of the lineup Tuesday.
Insight: Napoli has been battling plantar fasciitis all season. For the most part, he's been able to play through it but now that the Red Sox have officially clinched the division, they can afford to give their power-hitting first baseman a couple of days off.
Felix Doubront, SP9/22/2013 7:12:00 PM
Description: Making his first start in over two weeks, Red Sox lefty Felix Doubront allowed two runs in seven innings Sunday against Toronto.

Clay Buchholz, SP9/22/2013 10:06:00 AM

Description: Boston center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury said he's "very confident" that he'll be back before the end of the season. SOURCE: Associated Press
Insight: He's missed most of September with a compression fracture in his right foot. If Ellsbury (.299, 8 HR, 52 RBI, 52 SB) does come back it will only be for the last couple games. Fantasy owners can cut him loose at this point.
Will Middlebrooks, 3BCold9/18/2013 5:15:00 PM
Description: Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks is back in the lineup after missing Tuesday's game with the flu.

Description: Koji Uehara's streak of consecutive batters retired ended Tuesday in a loss to the Orioles.
Insight: Prior to Danny Valencia's triple in the ninth inning, the Red Sox closer had retired 37 hitters in a row, four shy of Bobby Jenks' major league record for a relief pitcher. Even with the loss, Uehara's ERA is still barely over one (1.18). He's having a season for the ages and should be started in all formats.
Dustin Pedroia, 2BHot9/18/2013 10:35:00 AM

Felix Doubront, SP9/17/2013 7:08:00 PM

Insight: Doubront was removed from the rotation once Clay Buchholz returned from the DL. He allowed 10 hits and 10 earned runs in 7 1/3 innings over his last two starts. However, he could be a decent streaming option against a Toronto team that will be without Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion.

Description: Felix Doubront will rejoin the rotation at some point but the team hasn't determined when that is yet, according to MLB.com.
Insight: "He'll get another start," said manager John Farrell. "We've just skipped him in this turn in the rotation. He'll get some side work with (pitching coach) Juan (Nieves). Daniel Nava, LF9/10/2013 11:36:00 AM
Description: Red Sox outfielder Daniel Nava is just 1-for-18 (.056) against Tampa Bay ace David Price with eight strikeouts.
Insight: Nava has posted solid numbers as part of a left field platoon this season. He's hitting .296 with 11 homers, 58 RBI, 67 runs and an .833 OPS, but those numbers aren't likely to improve if he's in Tuesday's starting lineup.
Clay Buchholz, SP9/10/2013 10:30:00 AM
Description: Boston righthander Clay Buchholz (strained neck) is expected to be activated from the 60-day disabled list for Tuesday's scheduled start against Tampa Bay
Insight: He's undefeated in 12 starts this season (9-0. 1.71 ERA, 1.02 WHIP). Ryan Dempster, who has struggled lately, will likely move to the bullpen.
Jon Lester, SP9/9/2013 9:14:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox will pick up Jon Lester's option for next season. SOURCE: Anthony Witrado, Sporting News
Insight: He'll earn $13 million in 2014. Lester had a tough first half (8-6, 4.58 ERA) but he's been much better since the All-Star break (5-2, 2.53 in ten starts).
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF9/8/2013 5:58:00 PM
Description: Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury has officially been diagnosed with a compression fracture in his right foot. SOURCE: Ian Browne, MLB.com
Insight: The Red Sox are saying they still expect Ellsbury (.299, 8 HR, 52 RBI, 52 SB) to be back before the end of the season. That seems a little optimistic given the nature of his injury. Any fracture is serious and Ellsbury's value is largely contingent on speed, which will obviously be hindered by a foot injury. He's probably not worthy of a roster spot at this point.
Will Middlebrooks, 3BHot9/8/2013 5:47:00 PM
Description: Will Middlebrooks continued his torrid September with another big game Sunday against New York.
Insight: The Red Sox third baseman homered off Mariano Rivera in the ninth to extend the game another half inning. He's hit .464 during his seven-game hitting streak.
Ryan Dempster, SP9/8/2013 11:47:00 AM
Description: According to Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com, either Ryan Dempster or Felix Doubront will be bumped from the rotation by Clay Buchholz, who will return Tuesday.
Insight: Dempster was a big free agent acquisition this past offseason, but he has struggled with the Red Sox. Doubront is 7-5 with a 3.55 ERA in 121 2/3 innings since May 16, but he has allowed 10 hits, seven walks and 10 earned runs in 7 1/3 innings this month. Both pitchers can be cut in fantasy leagues.
Allen Webster, SP9/8/2013 11:35:00 AM
Description: The Red Sox called up Allen Webster from Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday.
Insight: Webster (1-2, 9.57 ERA) made a few starts earlier in the year but the rotation is full now that Clay Buchholz is back in the mix. He'll be used as a long reliever and probably won't be on the team's postseason roster.
David Ortiz, DH9/8/2013 11:00:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz has picked up seven hits in 12 at-bats against Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda.
Insight: That's a .583 batting average. Ortiz is only hitting .196 over his last 15 games but he has gone 6-for-18 (.333) over his last four and has a fantastic matchup Sunday.
Shane Victorino, RF9/8/2013 10:50:00 AM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino is getting the afternoon off Sunday against New York.
Insight: Daniel Nava will be filling in at right field. Victorino, who should be available off the bench, could be asked to play some center field down the stretch while Jacoby Ellsbury recovers from a foot injury.
Mike Napoli, 1BHot9/8/2013 10:46:00 AM
Description: Scorching hot Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli will take a seat Sunday against the Yankees.
Insight: Mike Carp is getting the start in Napoli's place. The bearded first baseman has been on a power surge recently. During the team's five-game winning streak, Napoli has gone 10-for-18 with four jacks and nine RBI.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C9/8/2013 10:09:00 AM
Description: Boston catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia will bat sixth in his return to the lineup Sunday against New York. SOURCE: Jenny Dell, NESN
Insight: Salty missed about a week because of back trouble. He's hitting .256 in 39 at bats against the Yankees this season.
Xander Bogaerts, SS9/7/2013 8:15:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts hit his first career home run Saturday against the Yankees.
Insight: Bogaerts went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and three RBI in the game and is 8-for-24 (.333) in part-time duty since making his major league debut. The top prospect has limited fantasy value while he's serving as a backup infielder.
Will Middlebrooks, 3BHot9/7/2013 8:10:00 PM
Description: Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks is 11-for-25 (.440) with three homers and eight RBI in September.
Insight: Middlebrooks was demoted after hitting .192 over the first 53 games this season, but the Red Sox kept their faith in him and brought him back up to be the starting third baseman in August. In 25 games since returning to the majors, Middlebrooks has hit .357 with five homers and 15 RBI.
Mike Napoli, 1BHot9/7/2013 7:59:00 PM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli connected for two home runs and drove in three Saturday against the Yankees.
Insight: Napoli has two doubles, four homers, nine RBI and a .529 average over his last four games. He has raised his OPS 61 points over his last 12.
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF9/7/2013 6:05:00 PM
Description: Boston center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury's MRI showed inflammation in the navicular bone in his right foot. He has been placed in a walking boot and has returned to Boston for an examination to determine whether it is a bone bruise or fracture. SOURCE: Scott Lauber, Boston Herald
Insight: Red Sox manager John Farrell described the injury as potentially long term. "I don't think we're looking at something that's just day to day here," said Farrell. Dustin Pedroia had a navicular bone injury in 2010 and missed about three months and Cody Ross missed a month with the injury. However, GM Ben Cherington said Ellsbury's injury is "different" from the others."My understanding is there’s not a long-term concern here. It’s really about how do we best manage it over the course of the next several weeks, and hopefully he can play a lot in those several weeks," Cherington said. "I know he wants to play. We obviously want him to play. It's our hope that he'll be playing before too long." The Red Sox won't have a definitive timetable until Ellsbury is examined by team orthopedist Dr. Peter Asnis and foot specialist Dr. George Theodore.
Jackie Bradley Jr., LF9/7/2013 11:31:00 AM
Description: Jackie Bradley has been recalled from Pawtucket which may be an indication that Jacoby Ellsbury may be sidelined for a while.
Insight: He's got long-term fantasy value, but hasn't shown much this season. The 23-year-old outfielder has been bouncing back and forth between Boston and Pawtucket all season, but has struggled at the big league level batting .155 in his 58 at-bats. Latest update; Bradley will start in center field and bat seventh.
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF9/7/2013 10:30:00 AM
Description: Boston center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury has apparently flown to Boston to get his foot checked out, according to reporter Jessica Moran, so it may be more serious than first thought.
Insight: Ellsbury aggravated a previous foot injury when he stole second base last night against New York and will likely miss Saturday and possibly Sunday as well.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C9/6/2013 7:08:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is still out with a lower back issue. SOURCE: Scott Lauber, Boston Herald
Insight: He's been out since Monday. Manager John Farrell says that Salty's condition is improving and he could play as soon as Saturday.
Clay Buchholz, SP9/6/2013 6:15:00 PM
Description: Boston righthander Clay Buchholz will return to the starting rotation Tuesday against Tampa Bay.
Insight: Ryan Dempster, who had been scheduled to pitch that day, will likely move to the bullpen. Buchholz wound up missing three months with shoulder inflammation. He's undefeated in 12 starts this season (9-0. 1.71 ERA).
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF9/6/2013 4:20:00 PM
Description: Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury is not in Friday's starting lineup due to a foot injury.
Insight: Ellsbury (.297, 8 HR, 52 RBI, 51 SB) has had another solid season, but questions of his durability continue to follow him as he looks for a new contract.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B9/6/2013 1:15:00 PM
Description: Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is just a .229 hitter versus Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte with a .573 OPS.
Insight: Pedroia's home run total is down, but he's still scoring, knocking in runs and stealing bases. This matchup, however, is not a favorable one.
David Ortiz, DH9/6/2013 1:09:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is a career .371 hitter (23-for-62) against Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte.
Insight: Ortiz is just a lifetime .267 hitter against southpaws, so this level of success is rare for Ortiz in left-onl-eft matchups. Ignore the lefty-lefty split and start him as always.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C9/5/2013 7:10:00 PM
Description: Boston catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia remains out of the lineup with a lower back injury.
Insight: Salty hasn't played since Monday. According to NESN, he should be back later this weekend.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C9/5/2013 11:00:00 AM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is hitless in eight at-bats against Yankees starter Ivan Nova with five of the matchups ending in a strikeout.
Insight: Saltalamacchia hasn't had a hit since August 28th and shouldn't be in any fantasy lineups at this point in time.
Daniel Nava, LF9/4/2013 10:53:00 PM
Description: Red Sox outfielder Daniel Nava went 2-for-4 and hit his first home run since June 18 Wednesday against the Tigers.
Insight: Nava has posted solid numbers as part of a left field platoon this season. He's hitting .300 with 11 homers, 58 RBI, 66 runs and an .838 OPS.
Will Middlebrooks, 3B9/4/2013 10:51:00 PM
Description: Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks slugged a grand slam off Al Alburquerque of the Detroit Tigers Wednesday night.
Insight: Middlebrooks went 3-for-5 in the game and is 24-for-70 (.343) with three homers in 22 games since returning from the minors.
David Ortiz, DH9/4/2013 10:49:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz had two of Boston's eight home runs and drove in four Wednesday against the Tigers.
Insight: Ortiz also doubled for his 2,000th career hit and Boston walloped Detroit 20-4. The DH came into play Wednesday hitting .132 (5-for-38) with zero longballs over his last 11 games.
Koji Uehara, RPHot9/4/2013 9:27:00 AM
Description: Red Sox closer Koji Uehara continued his dominance Tuesday with a nine-pitch save against the Tigers.
Insight: Uehara (3-0, 1.16 ERA, 17 saves) has been unhittable in the second half. Since the break, he's held his opponents to an .078 average in 18 appearances. Uehara's scoreless streak is now at 25 innings. He's retired each of the last 21 hitters he's faced.
Jon Lester, SP9/3/2013 10:18:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Jon Lester prevented Max Scherzer from earning win No. 20 Tuesday by throwing seven innings of one-run ball.
Insight: Lester struck out nine and didn't walk a batter. The left-hander has had an up-and-down season and is 13-8 with a 3.88 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP in 185 1/3 innings.
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF9/3/2013 4:16:00 PM
Description: Jacoby Ellsbury is 5-for-9 (.556) with three walks and a .667 OBP against Detroit ace Max Scherzer.
Insight: Ellbury has been dealing with a thumb injury, but was in the lineup on Monday and should play on Tuesday. He's had a solid season (.297, 7 HR, 50 RBI, 87 runs, 51 SB) and fantasy owners should be happy as long as they didn't expect a big home run total. Latest update: Ellsbury is not in the starting lineup.
David Ortiz, DH9/3/2013 12:46:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is 7-for-13 (.538) with three homers and a 1.908 OPS against the favorite for the 2013 AL Cy Young Award - Max Scherzer.
Insight: Ortiz struggled in August, to the tune of .269 with a .782 OPS, but this favorable matchup could kick start September.
Shane Victorino, RF9/2/2013 10:17:00 AM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino injured his hip on Sunday but it won't keep him out of the starting lineup Monday against Detroit.
Insight: He's hitting in his usual spot in the lineup between leadoff man Jacoby Ellsbury and three-hitter Dustin Pedroia. A switch-hitter throughout most of his career, Victorino (.295, 12 HR, 51 RBI, 18 SB) has had tremendous success batting righthanded over the last month. He leads all Sox regulars in wins above replacement (5.6).
David Ortiz, DHHot9/2/2013 9:56:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz went from cold to hot in the blink of an eye.
Insight: Since busting out of his 0-for-23 slump on Friday night, Ortiz has gone 5-for-8 with six RBI. The 17-year veteran is on the cusp of his first 100 RBI season since 2010.
Felix Doubront, SP9/1/2013 10:50:00 PM
Description: Felix Doubront has had a surprising year for the Red Sox but he couldn't make it out of the fourth inning Sunday against the White Sox.
Insight: It was Doubront's shortest outing since September 1st of last year. All four of the runs Doubront (10-6, 3.89 ERA) surrendered came in the fourth inning. Despite his struggles, the Red Sox were able to hold on for the win, stretching their lead to five and a half games in the AL East.
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF9/1/2013 5:57:00 PM
Description: Jacoby Ellsbury was replaced by Quinton Berry in center field after jamming his thumb in the eighth inning Sunday against Chicago. SOURCE: Scott Lauber, Boston Herald
Insight: Ellbury's removal from the game was precautionary. The Boston center fielder should be back in action Monday against the AL Central-leading Tigers.
Koji Uehara, RPHot9/1/2013 5:48:00 PM
Description: Boston closer Koji Uehara recorded his 21st consecutive scoreless outing Sunday in a win against Chicago.
Insight: That ties Jonathan Papelbon for the second-longest streak in team history. Uehara (3-0, 1.17 ERA, 16 saves) hasn't allowed an earned run since June 30th.
Shane Victorino, RF9/1/2013 5:43:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino has been diagnosed with a bruised hip. SOURCE: Evan Drellich, Springfield Republican
Insight: It's not related to the hamstring injury he struggled with earlier in the year. Manager John Farrell said in his postgame press conference that he expects Victorino (.295, 12 HR, 51 RBI, 18 SB) to play in Monday's series opener against Detroit.
Shane Victorino, RF9/1/2013 4:47:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino didn't come out for the seventh inning after limping to first base on a groundout Sunday against the White Sox.
Insight: It looks like Victorino may have aggravated a hamstring injury he dealt with earlier this season. He was campaigning to stay in the game but manager John Farrell wouldn't let him. Daniel Nava is now occupying right field with Jonny Gomes moving to left.
Daniel Bard, RP9/1/2013 3:22:00 PM
Description: Boston righthander Daniel Bard has been designated for assignment.
Insight: Bard was a stud reliever for the Sox a few seasons ago but lately he's turned into a walk machine (29 BB in 16 1/3 innings between the majors and minors this season). He still brings mid-90s heat so it's possible Bard could catch on somewhere else. Just don't expect much fantasy production when he does.
Mike Napoli, 1B8/31/2013 10:57:00 PM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli went 2-for-4 with one RBI Saturday but hit just .208 in the month of August.
Insight: Napoli has provided 32 doubles, 17 homers, 76 RBI and a .786 OPS, so his .249 average isn't that harmful.
Mike Napoli, 1B8/31/2013 10:40:00 AM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli is a career .167 hitter with 13 strikeouts in just 24 at-bats against Chicago left-hander John Danks.
Insight: Napoli is batting .247 with 17 HR and 75 RBI, but his 166 strikeouts are a career high and his .781 OPS is the lowest of his career.
Ryan Dempster, SP8/30/2013 10:18:00 AM
Description: Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster (suspended five games for intentionally throwing at Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez) is expected to make the start on Friday.
Insight: Long-term, Dempster could be the odd-man out when Clay Buchholz returns to the mound as he has pitched poorly over the past two months (6.25 ERA, 1.656 WHIP).
Mike Carp, 1B8/30/2013 10:13:00 AM
Description: Red Sox first baseman/outfielder Mike Carp (left shoulder) is questionable for Friday's game against the Chicago White Sox.
Insight: Carp has solid numbers (.307, 8 HR, 31 RBI) given his limited playing time (176 at-bats).
David Ortiz, DHCold8/29/2013 7:27:00 PM
Description: Boston DH David Ortiz entered Thursday's game against Baltimore hitless in his last 18 at bats.
Insight: Fortunately, the Red Sox lineup is deep enough to withstand such a slump and Boston still leads the American League with 79 wins. Despite his poor performance of late, Ortiz is still fifth in the AL in batting average (.313).
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF8/29/2013 3:37:00 PM
Description: Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury (foot) is in the lineup Thursday against the Orioles.
Insight: Ellsbury left Wednesday's game after fouling a ball off his foot, but he's good to go.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C8/29/2013 11:13:00 AM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is just 1-for-13 (.077) with five strikeouts against Baltimore starter Chris Tillman.
Insight: Saltalamacchia has had a decline in home runs from last year but his batting average is up from .222 to .273 and with 35 doubles he actually has more extra-base hits than last season. However, he isn't likely to do much against Tillman Thursday.
Stephen Drew, SS8/28/2013 10:04:00 AM
Description: Boston shortstop Stephen Drew is 6-for-12 with three extra base hits and a 1.433 OPS against Baltimore right-hander Bud Norris.
Insight: Drew has never lived up to his hype and fantasy owners have learned to ignore him for much of his career. This is a rare favorable matchup.
Dustin Pedroia, 2BHot8/27/2013 10:28:00 PM
Description: Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is on fire over his last 13 games.
Insight: He went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI Tuesday against the Orioles and is 23-for-58 (.397) since Aug. 13. He started off the second half 17-for-92 (.185).
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF8/27/2013 10:25:00 PM
Description: Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-5 with three runs Tuesday against the Orioles.
Insight: Ellsbury had been in a bit of a slump, going 12-for-60 with 17 K over his previous 13 games and 1-for-14 over his previous three.
Shane Victorino, RFHot8/27/2013 10:22:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino had a monster night at the plate Tuesday, going 3-for-3 with a double, two home runs, seven RBI and four runs scored against the Orioles.
Insight: Victorino is smoking hot right now. Over his last nine games, the outfielder is batting .444 with five doubles, four home runs, 11 RBI and 11 runs. He reached 100 career home runs Tuesday night.
Clay Buchholz, SP8/25/2013 8:53:00 PM
Description: Red Sox righthander Clay Buchholz struggled during his first rehab start Sunday for Single-A Lowell. SOURCE: William Montgomery, Boston Herald
Insight: Buchholz was only able to get out two of the seven batters he threw to. His fastball didn't even make it to 90 mph. The Red Sox were hoping to have Buchholz back in the rotation sometime next week but it looks like he may need a little more time. We'll see how he does in his next start Friday for Double-A Portland or Triple-A Pawtucket.
Stephen Drew, SS8/25/2013 7:09:00 PM
Description: Boston shortstop Stephen Drew won't be in the lineup Sunday versus the Dodgers.
Insight: Drew is hitting under .200 against lefties this season so it makes sense to sit him with Chris Capuano on the mound for Los Angeles. Rookie Xander Bogaerts will get the start at shortstop.
David Ortiz, DH8/25/2013 7:07:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is out of the lineup for the second straight day.
Insight: It's also the second straight day the Dodgers have featured a lefthanded starting pitcher, which could be the reason behind Ortiz's absence. Mike Napoli will hit cleanup and play first base Sunday in the series finale.
Jon Lester, SPHot8/24/2013 8:14:00 PM
Description: Boston lefthander Jon Lester (7 1/3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 6 K's) turned in a vintage performance Saturday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Lester has looked excellent on this road trip (2-0, 0.57 ERA) and really for most of August (2-1, 2.70). The ten days of rest he got between the All-Star break and the start of the second half have helped tremendously as Lester is throwing harder and commanding his fastball better than he has in a long time. The rest hasn't helped him at the plate, however, as Lester remains hitless in his big league career (0-for-3 with three strikeouts on Saturday).
Clay Buchholz, SP8/24/2013 6:09:00 PM
Description: Boston ace Clay Buchholz is hoping to return to the rotation September 4th against the Tigers. SOURCE: Scott Lauber, Boston Herald
Insight: Buchholz will make a rehab start for Single-A Lowell on Sunday. He's missed the last two and a half months while dealing with inflammation in his right shoulder. Buchholz is undefeated in 12 starts this season (9-0, 1.71 ERA).
David Ortiz, DH8/24/2013 1:34:00 PM
Description: Boston DH/1B David Ortiz will sit for Saturday's contest against the Dodgers and lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu, according to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald.
Insight: Ortiz left Wednesday's game early because of lower back tightness and while he played on Friday all this time at first base (they are on a road trip to NL cities) isn't helping it heal. Mike Napoli will get the start.
Mike Napoli, 1B8/24/2013 1:30:00 PM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli (foot) will play first base against the Dodgers and left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu.
Insight: Napoli is batting .244 with 15 HR and 69 RBI, but with 159 strikeouts in 414 at-bats. David Ortiz will sit instead of facing the tough left-hander.
David Ortiz, DH8/23/2013 9:43:00 PM
Description: David Ortiz will start at first base Friday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Ortiz left Wednesday's game early because of lower back tightness. The Red Sox DH went hitless (0-for-8) with four strikeouts versus the Giants earlier this week.
Shane Victorino, RF8/23/2013 1:26:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino is 6-for-37 (.162) with more strikeouts than hits against Dodgers starter Ricky Nolasco.
Insight: Victorino has 11 hits in his last 22 at-bats and is hitting .290 with eight homers, 40 RBI, 59 runs and 17 steals in 95 games this season. He just doesn't hit Nolasco well.
Stephen Drew, SS8/23/2013 1:25:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew is a stunning 11-for-21 (.524) with three homers and a 1.736 OPS versus Dodgers starter Ricky Nolasco.
Insight: Drew went 1-for-5 with a home run on Wednesday and is hitting .246. He'll need to produce to hold off prospect Xander Bogaerts, who was called up this week to serve as a backup at third base and shortstop and his matchup is a nice place to start.
David Ortiz, DH8/23/2013 10:13:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz left Wednesday's game against the Giants with lower back tightness and is questionable for Friday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Insight: Ortiz went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts before exiting prior to the bottom of the fifth inning. Ortiz has been forced to start at first base in two of the last three games because the team was playing in a National League city. They start a series with the Dodgers and Ortiz may be reduced to a pinch hitting role.
Felix Doubront, SP8/21/2013 8:14:00 PM
Description: After throwing four innings in two straight starts, Boston lefty Felix Doubront doubled up on that Wednesday with eight innings of one-run ball against the Giants.
Insight: Doubront allowed five hits, walked one and struck out three to improve to 9-6. He has a solid 3.79 ERA despite holding a subpar 1.40 WHIP.
Stephen Drew, SS8/21/2013 8:10:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew's lone hit Wednesday at San Francisco was a three-run homer.
Insight: Drew went 1-for-5 and is hitting .246. He'll need to produce to hold off prospect Xander Bogaerts, who was called up this week to serve as a backup at third base and shortstop.
Shane Victorino, RF8/21/2013 8:07:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino is 11-for-22 (.500) over his last five games.
Insight: Victorino went 3-for-5 with a double, one RBI and one run Wednesday against San Francisco and is hitting .290 with eight homers, 40 RBI, 59 runs and 17 steals in 95 games this season. He has dealt with nagging injuries all season, but if he can stay healthy the rest of the season he'll be a solid fourth outfielder in fantasy leagues.
Will Middlebrooks, 3B8/21/2013 8:04:00 PM
Description: Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks is hitting .441 with three doubles, two homers, seven RBI, six runs and a 7/7 K/BB in 11 games since returning from the minors.
Insight: Middlebrooks went 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBI Wednesday against the Giants and seems to have rediscovered his swing after hitting .192 with a .617 OPS and 60 K in 53 games prior to his demotion.
David Ortiz, DH8/21/2013 6:33:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz left Wednesday's game against the Giants with lower back tightness, according to Evan Drellich of MassLive.com.
Insight: Ortiz went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts before exiting prior to the bottom of the fifth inning. With no DH available, Ortiz has had to start at first base in two of the last three games, which could have something to do with his back tightening up.
David Ortiz, DH8/21/2013 10:57:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is a career .400 hitter with a pair of homers and a 1.204 OPS versus Giants lefty Barry Zito.
Insight: With no DH available, Ortiz started at first base Monday, but sat out Tuesday. We expect him back in the lineup for this favorable matchup.
Clay Buchholz, SP8/20/2013 7:20:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz (shoulder) will start a minor league rehab assignment next week if he gets through a bullpen session on Friday. He threw a three-inning simulated game Tuesday. SOURCE: Scott Lauber, Boston Herald
Insight: Buchholz hasn't pitched since June 8 due to inflammation in his shoulder. He's had multiple setbacks along the way but finally appears close to making a return.
David Ortiz, DH8/20/2013 6:25:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is getting the night off Tuesday at San Francisco.
Insight: With no DH available, Ortiz started at first base Monday, but he'll sit out Tuesday. Mike Carp is starting at first base.
Mike Napoli, 1B8/20/2013 6:22:00 PM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli (foot) is still out of the lineup Tuesday.
Insight: He has missed four straight games with plantar fasciitis in his left foot. Mike Carp will start at first base Tuesday.
Ryan Dempster, SP8/20/2013 5:53:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster has been suspended five games for intentionally throwing at Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez on Sunday.
Insight: Dempster threw three pitches at or near Rodriguez before finally drilling him with a fourth, but he wasn't ejected from the game and won't even have to miss a start due to the suspension.
Mike Napoli, 1B8/20/2013 11:06:00 AM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli has missed three games in a row and is questionable for Tuesday's game against the Giants in San Francisco.
Insight: He's been battling plantar fasciitis in his left foot. David Ortiz will likely make another start at first base.
Jose Contreras, RP8/19/2013 8:28:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox released righthander Jose Contreras on Monday.
Insight: He didn't appear in any games for the Sox. The 41-year-old could opt for retirement if he doesn't find any good offers.
Xander Bogaerts, SS8/19/2013 8:12:00 PM
Description: Boston infielder Xander Bogaerts is not in the starting lineup Monday against the Giants.
Insight: Bogaerts was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket earlier in the day. Manager John Farrell said it's unlikely that Bogaerts will be an everyday player for the Sox. Instead, he'll play shortstop against lefties while getting the occasional start at third base. With Stephen Drew about to become a free agent, Bogaerts should be Boston's starting shortstop in 2014.
David Ross, C8/19/2013 7:37:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have activated catcher David Ross from the 60-day disabled list.
Insight: Ryan Lavarnway was sent down to Triple-A to make room for Ross on the active roster. Concussions have limited Ross to just 23 games this season. He's not in Monday's starting lineup but he should be available off the bench.

Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli is doubtful for Monday's game against San Francisco due to plantar fasciitis in left foot. He hasn't played since Friday.
Insight: Napoli is 2-for-20 (.100) with nine strikeouts over his last five games. He built most of his statistics in April and has struggled since.
Danny Valencia, 3B8/19/2013 11:29:00 AM
Description: Orioles just-called-up utilty man Danny Valencia is likely to get the start on Monday as he's 7-for-10 with a 1.550 OPS against David Price.
Insight: Valencia is batting just .216 in 74 at-bats this season, but could be worth a one-day flier in this favorable matchup.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B8/17/2013 8:36:00 PM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia left Saturday's game against the Yankees after fouling a ball off his foot in the eighth inning. SOURCE: Scott Lauber, Boston Herald
Insight: Manager John Farrell says he doesn't expect Pedroia to miss any time. Pedroia went 0-for-5 before Brock Holt replaced him in the ninth inning.
John Lackey, SP8/17/2013 8:31:00 PM
Description: Boston starter John Lackey was finally able to get back on track Saturday against the Yankees (6 2/3 IP, 6 H, 1 ER).
Insight: The win was Lackey's first since July 12th. Fantasy owners were expecting more from Lackey after his excellent first half (7-6, 2.78 ERA) but at least he delivered a solid outing on Saturday. His next start will come Friday against the Dodgers.
Mike Napoli, 1BCold8/17/2013 2:36:00 PM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli is not in the lineup Saturday against the Yankees.
Insight: Apparently he's dealing with a foot injury. Napoli is 2-for-20 (.100) with nine strikeouts over his last five games. He built most of his statistics in April and has struggled since.
Shane Victorino, RF8/17/2013 1:38:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino left Friday night's game early and is not in saturday's starting lineup, according to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald.
Insight: Victorino has been battling a bad hamstring for a long time and aggravated it in Friday's game. He's also hitless in his last three starts, so the day off might be good for him.
David Ortiz, DH8/17/2013 9:35:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz has a .667 lifetime average in nine at-bats against Yankees right-hander Hiroki Kuroda.
Insight: Ortiz has been a huge factor this season, batting .323 with 23 HR, 76 RBI and a .981 OPS in 103 games. Saturday afternoon should be no different.
Dustin Pedroia, 2BCold8/16/2013 10:22:00 AM
Description: Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is just a .222 hitter (10-for-45) agains Yankees veteran left-hander Andy Pettitte.

Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli is not in the lineup Thursday against the Blue Jays.

David Ortiz, DH8/15/2013 10:27:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz has a .358 lifetime average in 67 at-bats against veteran Mark Buehrle of the Blue Jays.
Insight: Ortiz is 24-for-67 with nine doubles, three homers, 13 RBI and four walks against Buehrle. Thursday's could be another huge day for the Red Sox DH.
Mike Napoli, 1BCold8/14/2013 10:37:00 PM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli busted out of an 0-for-16 drought by slamming a game-tying homer in the ninth inning Wednesday against Toronto.
Insight: Napoli (.245, 15 HR, 69 RBI) had a chance to be the hero again in the tenth inning but he grounded out with a couple of men on base. The free-swinging first baseman is on pace for 210 strikeouts this season, which would easily be a career-high.
Shane Victorino, RF8/14/2013 9:39:00 PM
Description: If you're wondering why Boston right fielder Shane Victorino has mostly been hitting righthanded this month it's because he's having trouble pushing off his left leg.
Insight: Victorino acknowledged this fact on Wednesday, telling MLB.com's Ian Browne, "It's something we're working on every day to try and get back, because trust me, I want to be back on that side." Victorino batted lefty a couple of times on Wednesday so maybe his leg is feeling a bit better.
Clay Buchholz, SP8/14/2013 6:42:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz (shoulder) threw roughly 50 pitches in a bullpen session Wednesday and said it was his "best day so far." SOURCE: Scott Lauber, Boston Herald

Ryan Dempster, SP8/13/2013 10:47:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster tossed seven innings of one-run ball Tuesday against the Blue Jays.

Clay Buchholz, SP8/13/2013 8:06:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz (shoulder) will throw a full bullpen session Wednesday, according to MassLive.com.
Insight: Buchholz hasn't pitched since June 8 due to inflammation in his shoulder. He has thrown a few light bullpen sessions at less than 100 percent intensity, but he'll ramp it up to 100 percent Wednesday. Manager John Farrell said a clearer timetable should be available after the session.
John Lackey, SPCold8/11/2013 5:55:00 PM
Description: John Lackey's nightmare second half continued Sunday against the Royals.
Insight: Lackey surrendered four runs in seven innings, walking two with five strikeouts. He's 0-4 with a 4.96 ERA since the All-Star break. In the first half, Lackey was 7-6 with a 2.78 ERA in 16 appearances.
David Ortiz, DH8/11/2013 10:31:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz has another favorable matchup Sunday against Royals starter James Shields. Ortiz is 18-for-54 (.333) with nine doubles, three homers, 16 RBI and eight walks against the former Rays righty.
Insight: Ortiz also had strong numbers against Saturday's starter Jeremy Guthrie, but he went 0-for-4. We're betting he won't have a second straight poor game with Shields on the mound.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C8/11/2013 10:18:00 AM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has never had a hit against Royals starter James Shields.

Insight: Ellsbury is hitting .305 with an .806 OPS, seven homers, 71 runs and 42 steals. He has batted .349 with a .921 OPS over his last 65 games after struggling for much of the first two months.
Will Middlebrooks, 3B8/10/2013 5:13:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox recalled third baseman Will Middlebrooks from Triple-A Pawtucket Saturday.
Insight: After trading Jose Iglesias in a deal for Jake Peavy, the Red Sox have had a hole at third base. Instead of calling up top prospect Xander Bogaerts, a shortstop who has been playing some third base at Triple-A, the team has gone back to Middlebrooks, who hit .268 with 10 homers and a .790 OPS in 45 games with Pawtucket. He'll return to a pitiful .192/.228/.389 line with the Red Sox.
David Ortiz, DHHot8/10/2013 12:33:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is a career .342 hitter with three homers and a 1.133 OPS against Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie.
Insight: Ortiz is hitting .392 since the All-Star break on top of an excellent first half. It appears that he's going to post a 1.000 OPS for the second consecutive year and fifth time of his 17-year career. He's a must start on Saturday.
Mike Napoli, 1B8/9/2013 10:39:00 AM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli is a career .333 hitter with three home runs and a 1.344 OPS in 18 at-bats versus Royals starter Ervin Santana.
Insight: Napoli has only recorded one hit in 19 at bats so even this favorable matchup might not be enough to get him out of the doldrums.
David Ortiz, DHHot8/8/2013 5:49:00 PM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is not in the lineup Thursday night against the Royals, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe. He has started 28 games in a row going back to July 6.
Insight: Mike Napoli is starting as the DH, with Daniel Nava playing first base. Ortiz has recorded two straight four-hit games and is hitting .392 since the All-Star break. He should be back in the lineup Friday.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B8/8/2013 11:26:00 AM
Description: Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has had a tough go of it since the All-Star break (.192 AVG) but he should be able to turn things around Thursday versus Bruce Chen.
Insight: Pedroia has owned Chen in 11 previous matchups (.455 AVG). Despite a slow start to the second half, Pedroia (.295, 8 HR, 68 RBI) is still on pace to set a new career-high in RBI.
Mike Napoli, 1BCold8/8/2013 11:23:00 AM
Description: With Bruce Chen throwing for Kansas City on Thursday, fantasy owners might want to leave Mike Napoli on the bench.
Insight: Napoli has only recorded one hit in 11 at bats against Chen (the one hit was a homer). He's just 3-for-31 in his last nine contests (.097 AVG).
David Ross, C8/8/2013 10:42:00 AM
Description: Red Sox catcher David Ross is hoping to begin a rehab assignment this weekend. SOURCE: Boston Herald
Insight: Concussion symptoms have sidelined Ross for the last two months. With Ross out, Jarrod Saltalamacchia (.264, 10 HR, 43 RBI) has had to catch 48 of the team's last 60 contests.
David Ortiz, DHHot8/8/2013 9:28:00 AM
Description: David Ortiz's renaissance continued Wednesday in a four-hit effort versus Houston.
Insight: The Red Sox DH has absolutely throttled the Astros this season, collecting a .630 AVG in 27 at bats. He went 8-for-9 in the final two games of the series to raise his average to .332, fourth-best in the major leagues behind Miguel Cabrera (.359), Chris Johnson (.339) and Mike Trout (.333). The nine-time All-Star is hitting .392 since the All-Star break.
Stephen Drew, SSHot8/8/2013 9:23:00 AM
Description: Call him Mr. Clutch. Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew produced another game-winning hit Wednesday against the Astros.
Insight: Boston trailed 5-4 heading into the ninth inning but Drew changed that with one swing, crushing a three-run homer to make it 7-5. A disappointment in the first half (.233 AVG in 232 at bats), Drew has been much better since the All-Star break (.316 in 57 at bats). He's batting .448 (13-for-29) during his eight-game hitting streak.
Shane Victorino, RF8/7/2013 11:00:00 PM
Description: Boston right fielder Shane Victorino was ejected in the seventh inning Wednesday versus Houston.
Insight: Victorino was tossed for arguing with third base umpire Brian Knight. He went 1-for-4 with a single before exiting. With Victorino gone, the Red Sox will probably move Mike Carp to the outfield with Mike Napoli taking over at first base.
Clay Buchholz, SP8/6/2013 5:14:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz (shoulder) threw off a mound at 60-65 percent intensity Tuesday and came away optimistic, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.
Insight: Buchholz is trying to return from inflammation in his shoulder. The right-hander hasn't pitched since June 8 and has experienced multiple setbacks from trying to push himself too hard to come back.
Daniel Nava, LF8/5/2013 7:12:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have placed left fielder Daniel Nava on paternity leave.
Insight: Nava should be back by the time the Red Sox begin their series against Kansas City on Thursday. Jonny Gomes will get the start in left field Monday at Houston.
Felix Doubront, SP8/5/2013 12:03:00 PM
Description: Boston lefthander Felix Doubront, who posted another good outing Sunday against the Diamondbacks, is probable for Friday's scheduled start against Kansas City due to tightness in right oblique.
Insight: Doubront (7 IP, 5 H, 5 K's) has allowed three runs or fewer in 15 straight starts. That's the longest streak by a Boston starting pitcher since Pedro Martinez did that 16 times in a row between 2002 and 2003.
Felix Doubront, SP8/4/2013 5:49:00 PM
Description: Boston lefthander Felix Doubront threw all zeros Sunday against the Diamondbacks.
Insight: Doubront (7 IP, 5 H, 5 K's) has allowed three runs or fewer in 15 straight starts. That's the longest streak by a Boston starting pitcher since Pedro Martinez did that 16 times in a row between 2002 and 2003.
Mike Napoli, 1B8/4/2013 9:46:00 AM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli doesn't have a good history against Arizona right-hander Brandon McCarthy and should not be in fantasy lineups.
Insight: Napoli is just 3-for-16 (.188) without an extra base hit and seven strikeouts in their matchups. He's struggled with the strikeout all season - 141 in 370 at-bats. Avoid this matchup.
Jake Peavy, SP8/2/2013 8:07:00 PM
Description: We got it right the first time. Jake Peavy will be making his Red Sox debut Saturday against the Diamondbacks.
Insight: Patrick Corbin will make the start for Arizona. Saturday's game at Fenway should be a low-scoring affair.
Shane Victorino, RFHot8/1/2013 10:34:00 PM
Description: Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino went 7-for-15 with two doubles, a homer, three RBI and six runs during Boston's three-game set with Seattle this week.
Insight: Victorino was 2-for-5 with a homer, three RBI and two runs Thursday to help Boston turn a 7-1 eighth inning deficit into an 8-7 win.
Mike Napoli, 1B8/1/2013 3:39:00 PM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli won't be available for Thursday's series finale against the Mariners. SOURCE: Jenny Dell, NESN
Insight: Napoli continues to be a strikeout machine for the Red Sox. He's now whiffed 13 times in his last 27 at bats. Mike Carp will get the start at first base.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C8/1/2013 3:37:00 PM
Description: Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia won't be on the field Thursday against Seattle.
Insight: Saltalamacchia caught all 15 innings of Boston's win last night, going 2-for-7 with a couple of singles. According to ESPN's player rater, he's been the 16th-best fantasy catcher this season.
Jake Peavy, SP8/1/2013 3:32:00 PM
Description: Righthander Jake Peavy will start Sunday versus Arizona.
Insight: Peavy's Boston debut will be a nationally televised game on TBS. By pitching on Sunday, Peavy will be going on normal rest. He's sandwiched between Felix Doubront and John Lackey in the Red Sox starting rotation.
Mike Napoli, 1B8/1/2013 12:04:00 PM
Description: Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli shouldn't be in any fantasy lineups on Thursday.
Insight: That's because "King" Felix Hernandez will be on the hill for Seattle, a pitcher Napoli has always struggled against (6-for-36, 14 strikeouts). Napoli went 0-for-5 Wednesday in Boston's 15-inning win.
Stephen Drew, SS8/1/2013 9:55:00 AM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew plated the game-winning run Wednesday night against Seattle.
Insight: Drew capped off a two-hit night with a bases loaded single in the 15th inning. Despite his recent heroics (he had a two-homer game against Baltimore last week), Drew is still hitting just .228 for the season. It's unlikely the Red Sox will retain Stephen Drew in free agency next winter with top prospect Xander Bogaerts waiting in the wings.
Jake Peavy, SP7/31/2013 7:58:00 PM
Description: ESPN's Buster Olney suggested that Jake Peavy could make his Red Sox debut Saturday against the Diamondbacks.
Insight: Peavy was scratched from his start Tuesday because the White Sox were planning to trade him. The righthander is 13-12 with a 4.66 ERA in 29 career starts against Arizona.
Brock Holt, 3B7/31/2013 7:48:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have called up Triple-A infielder Brock Holt to play third base.
Insight: Jose Iglesias was shipped to the Tigers Tuesday night as part of the Jake Peavy trade, leaving the Red Sox with a hole at third base. Holt was hitting .264 with Triple-A Pawtucket at the time of his call-up. Despite his struggles earlier in the season, the Sox are still hoping Will Middlebrooks can be the team's third baseman of the future. Holt is a stop gap and not someone fantasy owners can rely on.
Jake Peavy, SP7/30/2013 10:54:00 PM
Description: According to Jon Heyman and Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com, White Sox starter Jake Peavy is on his way to the Red Sox.
Insight: The trade, which is still breaking, is a three-team deal also involving the Tigers. Jose Iglesias is expected to be shipped to Detroit. Peavy has made just one appearance at Fenway Park in his career and went seven innings while giving up three runs.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C7/30/2013 10:21:00 PM
Description: Boston catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit his ninth homer of the season Tuesday against Seattle.
Insight: Saltalamacchia is hitting 41 points higher than last year, but his power numbers are down after blasting 25 longballs in 2012.
Dustin Pedroia, 2BCold7/30/2013 10:18:00 PM
Description: Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia went 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and two runs Tuesday against Seattle.
Insight: Pedroia started off the second half with three hits in his first 39 at-bats (.077) and watched his average drop from .316 to .294 in that span.
Brandon Workman, SP7/30/2013 10:16:00 PM
Description: Red Sox rookie Brandon Workman threw his third straight start of at least six innings Tuesday against the Mariners.
Insight: Workman struck out a career-high nine batters and allowed one run on six hits. The right-hander has a 2.45 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP in his first three major league starts.
David Ortiz, DH7/30/2013 10:55:00 AM
Description: Red Sox DH David Ortiz is just 3-for-20 (.150) against Seattle left-hander Joe Saunder without an extra base hit and a .377 OPS.
Insight: Ortiz, who is hitting .329 with 20 home runs, 67 RBI and a 1.020 OPS, has been a huge part of the Red Sox offense as well as a bright spot for every fantasy owner, but this is an unfavorable matchup.
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF7/30/2013 10:51:00 AM
Description: Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury is just 3-for-17 (.176) with no extra base hits against Seattle starter Joe Saunders.
Insight: He's batting .302 with four homers, 34 RBI, 62 runs and a league-leading 39 steals. His 32 HR season of 2011 was obviously a fluke, but his batting average and speed are consistent year-to-year. This is a poor matchup, however.
