NCAA Game Summary - SMU at South Florida
(Saturday, November 23)
Final Score: SMU 16, South Florida 6
Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - In a game with little offense to speak of, the SMU Mustangs held off the South Florida Bulls, 16-6, in American Athletic Conference play at Raymond James Stadium.
Garrett Gilbert (19-of-23, 138 yards, INT) and Neal Burcham (9-of-18, 91 yards, TD, INT) shared the workload under center after Gilbert left with an injury for the Mustangs (5-5, 4-2 AAC). Jeremy Johnson was the most frequent receiving target with 82 yards on 13 receptions. Prescott Line ran for 37 yards and a touchdown.
Mike White completed 19-of-34 pass attempts for the Bulls (2-8, 2-4) for 217 yards, but he was intercepted twice. Andre Davis caught five passes for 113 yards.
Five minutes into the game, Chase Hover opened the scoring for the Mustangs by connecting on a 25-yard field goal. This would be the only scoring play of the first half, which was mired with stalled drives.
Just over four minutes into the second half, SMU added to its lead with a six- yard touchdown run by Line, but Hover couldn't tack on the extra point.
As time expired in the third quarter, Der'rikk Thompson caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Burcham, taking the Mustangs out to a 16-0 lead.
With 2:24 left to play, USF's Chris Dunkley returned a Mustangs' punt 50 yards for a score, but the ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed, and the Bulls fell, 16-6.
The Mustangs accumulated only 280 total yards, enough to overcome only 259 yards on the Bulls' side. The Bulls failed on their one and only chance in the red zone.
