NCAA Game Summary - North Texas at Tulane

New Orleans, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Cairo Santos put a 27-yard field goal attempt through the uprights as time expired to give Tulane a 24-21 win over North Texas in a Conference USA thriller at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Nick Montana completed 18-of-28 pass attempts for 132 yards and a touchdown for Tulane (4-2, 2-0 C-USA) as it secured its second win in a row. Ryan Grant made six catches for 60 yards. Lorenzo Doss had a huge day of the defensive side of the ball for the Green Wave, intercepting two passes and returning one for six points.
For UNT (2-3, 0-1), Derek Thompson went 29-of-42 for 326 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Darnell Smith made eight catches for 130 yards and a score. Brelan Chancellor also made an impact with seven receptions and 103 yards. The Mean Green running game was ineffective, running for just 34 yards in the game.
After a scoreless first frame, Tulane took a 7-0 lead as Montana completed a six-yard touchdown pass to Justyn Shackleford.
UNT finally put some points on the board with 8:27 left in the third quarter. Chancellor failed near the goal line as he attempted to rush into the end zone, but was bailed out as Mason Y'Barbo fell on the loose ball for a touchdown. Zach Paul sent his extra-point attempt through the uprights to tie the score, 7-7.
Although Tulane's offense continued to struggle, the Green Wave managed to take a 14-7 lead as Paul had a 38-yard field goal blocked and returned 62 yards for six points by Derrick Strozier. Cairo Santos converted his extra- point attempt to give the Green Wave a 14-7 lead with 4:34 left in the third frame.
The Green Wave's defense made a big play less than two minutes later to give the hosts a 21-7 lead as Doss picked off Thompson and returned the interception 59 yards for a score.
The Mean Green battled back in the fourth quarter after being held to zero offensive points through the first 45 minutes of action. Brandin Byrd scored on a one-yard touchdown catch in the opening minute of the fourth frame to make it a one-possession game. Thompson tied the score with only 3:45 remaining as he connected with Smith on a 62-yard touchdown pass.
With the game tied at 21, the Green Wave took over on their own 25-yard line with under four minutes remaining. Montana completed three passes to Grant and also picked up 13 yards on a quarterback draw to push into UNT territory. The Mean Green made a costly error at the wrong time as they were flagged for a personal foul that moved Tulane 15 yards closer to the goal line. The Green Wave ran a pair of plays to set up Santos for his game-winning 27-yard field goal as time expired.
Tulane held on for the win and improved to 2-0 in C-USA play despite being held to only 227 yards of total offense. The Mean Green amassed 360 total yards in the loss, but had their chances of winning hindered by 11 penalties which cost them 105 yards.
