Hawkins fired five games into Als' tenure

Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Dan Hawkins was fired as head coach of the Montreal Alouettes just five games into his first season.

General manager Jim Popp will take over on the sideline.

"Jim is the person most responsible for the success we have had over all these years," said Alouettes owner Bob Wetenhall in a brief statement Thursday. "I feel confident that he is the best person to coach our team at this time and I am very appreciative of him being willing to make this additional contribution to our franchise. He has the respect of our players as well as mine."

Hawkins, best known from his time in the U.S. college ranks as head coach at Colorado and Boise State, guided Montreal to a mark of 2-3 in his short CFL tenure.

The Alouettes are second in the Eastern Division, just one game behind Toronto. Montreal had lost three straight before a narrow 32-27 win over Edmonton last week.

Popp is in his 18th season with the Alouettes and has built three Grey Cup championship teams (2002, 2009-10).
