Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Zach Collaros passed for 330 yards and four touchdowns to lift the Toronto Argonauts to a 33-27 victory over the Calgary Stampeders in a cross-divisional thriller at McMahon Stadium.
Collaros completed 25-of-36 attempts and avoided throwing any interceptions for Toronto (8-4) as it won for the third straight outing. Jerious Norwood rushed for 68 yards on 10 carries and also led the team with 67 yards on four receptions. Andrew Durie made nine receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown while Robert McCune paced the Argonauts' defence with seven tackles.
For Calgary (9-3), Kevin Glenn completed 22-of-33 attempts for 225 yards with two touchdowns and the same number of interceptions. Jon Cornish gained 81 yards on 16 carries and added 23 more yards with two catches. Marquay McDaniel made six catches for 87 yards and a major while Jabari Arthur reeled in seven receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown. The Stampeders had been undefeated this season at home in five games and on a four-game winning streak overall. They also came in with a 5-0 mark versus East Division foes.
Toronto claimed an early lead as Collaros completed a four-yard strike to John Chiles in the back of the end zone for the first major of the bout. Swayze Waters converted his extra point try to give the visitors a 7-0 lead just four minutes after kickoff.
Calgary's opening drive showed some promise, but it scored just three points as Rene Paredes connected on a 52-yard field goal try.
After Jarriel King sacked Collaros and forced a fumble, Calgary took advantage of the short field and scored a touchdown on an 11-yard pass from Glenn to Arthur. Paredes converted the point after the touchdown and later in the period, Rob Maver's 59-yard punt was downed in the end zone for a single to give the hosts an 11-7 lead after 15 minutes of play.
Toronto scored a single of its own early in the second stanza as Waters had his 80-yard punt downed in the end zone. Calgary managed to put seven points on the board as Drew Tate punched it in from a yard out with just over nine minutes left in the half.
The Argonauts narrowed the gap as Collaros concluded an impressive drive with a two-yard touchdown pass to Andre Durie with just under six minutes left before the break. Waters converted the extra point but missed a 51-yard field goal with under a minute left in the second quarter which sent Calgary into halftime with an 18-15 lead.
Calgary started off the second half with great field position thanks to a 33 yard kick return by Larry Taylor. Four plays later Glenn completed a 17-yard pass to McDaniel for a major. Toronto had no trouble scoring on its first drive of the second half as Collaros completed a 28-yard strike to Inman for a touchdown on the visitor's fourth play of the half. Waters made a 40-yard field goal try at the 3:42 mark of the third quarter and the game went into the final frame tied up at 25.
The Argonauts took back the lead with just over eight minutes left in regulation as Collaros found Mike Bradwell on a 34-yard touchdown pass. Calgary was unable to answer, but added a single after Paredes missed a 47- yard field goal attempt with 4:33 left to play.
With the Stamps trailing by six points late in the fourth quarter, Brad Sinopli caught a pass from Glenn and appeared to run for a 57-yard touchdown, but the play was called back after Arthur was flagged for offensive pass interference.
After Waters had another punt downed for a single with under a minute left, the Stampeders took the field with one final shot. Calgary nearly scored a touchdown on a deep pass that was tipped near the goal line, but Anthony Parker secured the catch just out of bounds. An offsides penalty gave the hosts another shot, but the Stampeders attempted an in-play onsides kick after a completion to Arthur after the final snap, but Toronto jumped on the ball to clinch the win.
Chiles has made eight touchdown catches in eight weeks...Arthur's touchdown reception in the first quarter was his inaugural touchdown grab of the season...Toronto was without Chad Owens, who missed the game with a concussion...The all-time series between these clubs considering regular season matchups only is now tied at 42-42-1...Toronto improved to a league- best 5-1 on the road this season...The Stampeders had won 10 consecutive games at home coming into the contest.
