Final Score: St. Louis 6, Chicago 4
St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Carpenter drove in three runs to lead the St. Louis Cardinals in a 6-4 win over the Chicago Cubs to wrap up a three- game set.
Kolten Wong, Jhonny Peralta and Peter Bourjos all drove in a run for the Cardinals, who took the final two games of the set after dropping the opener in 11 innings.
"We had the opportunity to win this series today and we were able to take care of business," said Carpenter. "Now we're on the road for a while so we'll try to keep it going."
Michael Wacha (2-0) gave up three runs on five hits with a walk and eight strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings to win his second straight start.
Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run home run and Welington Castillo and Mike Olt each drove in a run for the Cubs, who have lost three of their last four. Edwin Jackson (0-1) gave up four runs on eight hits over six innings for his first loss in three starts this season.
"I was just trying to be aggressive out there," said Jackson. "They're a good hitting team and if you don't put guys away when you have the chance they're going to make you pay."
Rizzo clubbed his second home run of the season in the first inning with Justin Ruggiano on base to give the Cubs a quick 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals went on top in the second inning as Carpenter hit a two-run single, stole second, then came home on Wong's base hit to right for a 3-2 lead.
Following a 46-minute rain delay that interrupted play in the third inning, the Cubs tied the game in the fourth on Castillo's RBI single.
St. Louis, though, went on top for good in the fourth as Bourjos led off with a triple and later scored on Carpenter's sac fly for a 4-3 advantage.
The score stayed that way until the eighth inning when Peralta doubled home a run and Bourjos reached base on a fielder's choice, plating Allen Craig for a 6-3 lead.
Junior Lake tripled with one out off Trevor Rosenthal in the ninth, and Olt followed with a base hit to bring the tying run to the plate. After hitting Castillo with a pitch Rosenthal retired the next two batters to pick up his fourth save of the season.
The Cards travel to Milwaukee where they will start a three-game set on Monday ... The Cubs play a two-game set in New York against the Yankees starting on Tuesday ... Jackson fell to 2-7 in 13 games (12 starts) against the Cardinals ... Wacha earned his first decision against the Cubs in three appearances.
