MLB Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Arizona

(Tuesday, August 6th)

Final Score: Arizona 6, Tampa Bay 1

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Cody Ross crushed a three-run homer and the Arizona Diamondbacks got the best of Jeremy Hellickson for a second straight time, taking a 6-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in the opener of a two-game set at Chase Field.

The D'backs harassed Hellickson (10-5) when the two teams met last week at Tropicana Field, and the team scored five runs off the righty on Tuesday to capture just their third win in nine games.

Wade Miley (9-8) opposed Hellickson in that matchup and once again got the best of him, tossing seven innings of one-run ball on five hits. He's won his last three starts, allowing just two runs in 21 innings of work.

"He's been good, he's won five out of his last six," said D'backs manager Kirk Gibson about Miley. "He threw the ball very well, pretty much in command."

Hellickson lasted only 4 2/3 innings and walked three batters while allowing five hits. He's lost two straight decisions after winning six in a row.

Evan Longoria produced Tampa's only run with his 22nd homer of the season, which gave the Rays a 1-0 lead in the fourth.

Arizona quickly drew even in the home half. Paul Goldschmidt walked to start the inning and then came around when Chavez laced a double into the right field corner. Chavez ended 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

Hellickson then walked Aaron Hill before serving up Ross' three-run blast to left, which opened up a 4-1 advantage for the Diamondbacks.

"That really took the momentum away from us," said Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon.

Chavez had another RBI double in the fifth, knocking home Goldschmidt again after he walked and stole second base.

The Rays were unable to capitalize on an opportunity in the fifth, with Ben Zobrist lining out to second to strand a pair of runners, and never were able to make a dent in their deficit.

Martin Prado doubled in Adam Eaton in the seventh to account for the final margin.

Game Notes

Hellickson had a four-game road winning streak snapped ... The Rays lost for just the seventh time in 32 games and fell to 12-4 in interleague play ... Tampa placed outfielder Desmond Jennings on the 15-day disabled list with a fracture finger. Outfielder Jason Bourgeois was recalled from Triple-A Durham to fill the roster spot.
