Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
He plays late at night on a team which doesn't get much national attention, but if you have been doing your homework, you know that Franklin Gutierrez is quickly becoming "fantasy worthy."
The 26-year-old Seattle Mariners centerfielder hit just .230 in April with a single home run, but improved to .277 with two homers in May and .304 in June with four dingers.
July has shown all his talents, as he has hit .375 with five HRs, 14 RBIs and an OPS of 1.068. Gutierrez has hit safely in 15 of 16 games this month and 25 of his last 27 games.
And here is the really good news - he's owned in just 33% of all leagues so he's available for just the cost of a free agent pickup in 2/3 of all fantasy leagues.
Gutierrez was originally signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2000, but traded to Cleveland in 2004 for Milton Bradley. Over this past offseason, Gutierrez was part of a three-team trade (Mets, Cleveland, Seattle) which included J.J. Putz, Luis Valbuena, Endy Chavez and Aaron Heilman. Gutierrez was the key for Seattle, not only for his offensive potential, but because he might eventually become a Gold Glove centerfielder.
If you have a hole in your outfield, Gutierrez could be the perfect filler.
