Jordy Mercer, SS, PITHot8/18/2014 12:09:00 PM

Edwin Encarnacion, 1B, TOR8/17/2014 7:02:00 PM
Description: Toronto first baseman Edwin Encarnacion hit his first home run since returning from the disabled list.

Description: Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis will make another start at third base Sunday, his sixth of the season.
Insight: Davis' average is still below .200 on the year and he has 21 homers and 57 RBI in 366 at-bats, but third base eligibility could be important if he starts hitting down the stretch.

Description: Reds shortstop Zack Cozart is 5-for-9 (.556) with three extra-base hits and a 1.711 OPS versus Rockies Game 1 starter Jordan Lyles.
Insight: Cozart's production has dropped each season since his debut in 2011, but he's been batting .282 over the past two weeks and may be worth a one-day flier in this favorable matchup.

Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre is a career .400 hitter (4-for-10) with a double and two home runs against Angels starter Hector Santiago.
Insight: Beltre has a .319 average, 17 homers, 64 RBI, 61 runs and an .874 OPS so fantasy owners can hardly complain about his production, but he isn't likely to reach the 30-HR plateau that he's posted over the past three seasons.

Description: Minnesota first baseman Joe Mauer is a career .333 hitter (8-for-24) with a pair of home runs versus Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie.
Insight: Mauer has hit safely in four of five games since he returned from the DL to raise his average to .273, but he still has more to go if he's to reach his career average of .320.

Insight: Longoria's season as not been up to expectations. He's batting .253 with 15 HR and 64 RBI, but after 74 extra-base hits last season he's managed just 36 in 2014 and we've seen his OPS drop from .842 to a mediocre .716. Mike Napoli, 1B, BOS8/17/2014 11:04:00 AM
Description: Boston first baseman Mike Napoli is not in Sunday's starting lineup versus Houston and right-hander Collin McHugh.
Insight: It appears to be a regularly scheduled day off. Napoli has a modest four-game hitting streak to raise his average to .270 with 15 HR and 44 RBI in 99 games.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B, BOS8/17/2014 11:01:00 AM

Miguel Cabrera, 1B, DET8/17/2014 10:21:00 AM
Description: Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera is a career .167 hitter (2-for-12) versus Seattle right-hander Chris Young.
Insight: We only know a few pitchers who can consistently get Cabrera out and Young is one of them. Its hard to imagine, but we'd call this an "off" year for the two-time MVP, batting .311 with 17 home runs, 86 RBI and an .887 OPS this season.

Insight: La Stella has gone 8-for-44 (.182) in August. He has one homer and two steals to go with a .274 average, 27 RBI, 21 runs and a .700 OPS this season, so he's not a good fantasy option. Phil Gosselin is starting at second base.

Description: Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins is a .143 hitter (2-for-14) versus Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner.

Alcides Escobar, SS, KAN8/15/2014 1:38:00 PM
Description: Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar is 6-for-11 (.545) versus Twins starter Ricky Nolasco.

Trevor Plouffe, 3B, MIN8/15/2014 12:30:00 PM
Description: Minnesota third baseman Trevor Plouffe is an ugly 1-for-12 with five strikeouts against Royals starter Danny Duffy.

Description: Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez, on the disabled list with an oblique strain, played catch Wednesday.
Insight: Ramirez (.277, 12 HR, 58 RBI, 12 SB) is eligible to return on Aug. 24, but the real test will be when he tries to swing the bat at game speed. The talented shortstop has missed games with shoulder, calf and wrist injuries this season, but this is his first trip to the DL.

Jayson Nix, SS, PIT8/14/2014 10:41:00 AM
Description: You weren't going to start the .149 hitting Jayson Nix anyway, but it's interesting to note that he's a career 0-for-11 with nine strikeouts against Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer.
Insight: That's not seeing the ball well. In the league seven seasons, the utility infielder has never batted above .243, and has zero fantasy value.

Description: Dodgers second baseman Dee Gordon is hitless in seven at-bats versus Braves starter Aaron Harang.

Description: Braves second baseman Tommy La Stella is out of the lineup Wednesday.
Insight: La Stella was in the lineup Tuesday after leaving Monday's game with a hamstring cramp, so his absence Wednesday has more to do with left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu starting than any injury. Ian Desmond, SS, WAS 8/12/2014 10:37:00 PM
Description: Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond has homered in three of the past five games.
Insight: Desmond has hit just .214 in August and .244 this season, but with 20 homers, 72 RBI and 13 steals, he's a superb fantasy shortstop.

Insight: Rizzo is putting together the best season of his career (.278, 25 HR, 62 RBI, .873 OPS) though he's had a tough week, going just 4-for-22 in the past five games. This favorable matchup may reverse the current trend.
Casey McGehee, 3B, MIA8/12/2014 9:55:00 AM
Description: Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee is just 1-for-15 (.067) against Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright.
Insight: Miami's signing of McGehee (.302) has worked out well for the team and fantasy owners. With opponents avoiding Giancarlo Stanton in RBI situations, the result has been that McGehee has been in a great spot and has knocked in 60 runs despite hitting just three home runs. This matchup, however, is not favorable.

Description: Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy (thumb) is out again Monday.
Insight: Hardy was scratched from the lineup Sunday due to a sprained left thumb. He's gone 11-for-23 with three doubles, two homers and seven RBI over his last six games, so the injury comes at a bad time.

Insight: Mauer (.271) suffered a right oblique strain July 1. Prior to the injury, Mauer hit safely in 12 straight games and he hit .400 in 15 at-bats during his rehab assignment.

Description: Yankees second baseman Stephen Drew is 6-for-13 (.462) versus Baltimore starter Bud Norris.
Insight: He's hit just .171 in the ten games with the Yankees after batting .176 in Boston. It's probably best to avoid this matchup.

Insight: Howard is batting .218 on the season with 18 HR and 72 RBI. Apparently the Astros series was just a small uptick and not a permanent production level increase.

Description: Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki (hip) will consult more doctors as the team tries to find out why his recovery has been slow.
Insight: Tulowitzki suffered what was called a "left hip flexor strain" on July 19, but could actually be a labrum issue, according to Thomas Harding of mlb.com. Stay tuned, this would be season ending if it requires surgery.

Insight: In his first six MLB games, Baez has hit .276 with three homers and five RBI, but he's also struck out 10 times in 23 at-bats. The 21-year-old is an all-world talent, but he's going to have growing pains and his trade value likely won't be higher than it is right now, at least in 2014. It's a different story in keeper leagues, of course.
Adrian Beltre, 3B, TEX 8/10/2014 6:24:00 PM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre went 2-for-4 with a solo homer Sunday at Houston.
Insight: Beltre is likely going to come up short in his quest for a third straight 30-homer season, but with a .320 average, 17 homers, 62 RBI, 60 runs and an .880 OPS fantasy owners can hardly complain about his production.

Description: Pittsburgh first baseman Ike Davis is a career 4-for-12 (.333) with four home runs against Padres starter Ian Kennedy.

Description: Pittsburgh first baseman Gaby Sanchez will be the cleanup hitter Thursday night and play first base.
Insight: Sanchez hasn't done much this season, batting .225 with five homers and 20 RBI this season, but he should at least get some RBI chances batting in the middle of the order.

Description: Yankees 3B/OF Martin Prado moves up in the order for Thursday's game against Detroit. He'll bat second with Derek Jeter sitting.
Insight: Chase Headley is at first base as Mark Teixeira also sits, so Prado geta the start ar third base. He's hitting just .268 this season but his multi-position abilities are going to suit him well in New York.
