Carter, Kings down Canucks
Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jeff Carter scored the winner in the third period to help the Los Angeles Kings to a 3-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.
Carter added an empty-netter and Dustin Brown also scored for the Kings, who broke a season-high five-game losing streak. Jonathan Quick stopped 27 shots in the win.
"The last game we played we lost 5-0, but we thought we deserved a better fate," said Los Angeles head coach Darryl Sutter. "You just have to stay the course. It's hard to score. You just have to stay with it. We try to play a 200 foot game, and tonight we did it."
Ryan Kesler had the only goal of the game for the Canucks, who have dropped their past three. Roberto Luongo stopped 46 shots.
"In our division we are going to have to learn to battle hard, and it starts with our forwards, as far as the forecheck," said Vancouver head coach John Tortorella. "Our D was under siege all night long. If we are going to compete in our division in the second half of this year, we need to be more consistent."
Vancouver had taken a 1-0 lead in the first period on Kesler's power-play goal, and held the lead through two periods thanks to 35 saves from Luongo.
The Kings, though, tied the game at 1:07 of the third as Brown found himself with the puck at the low left side and was able to shoot it in for his eighth goal of the year.
Carter then gave the Kings the lead as Derek King caught up to the puck along the right boards and spun over before firing a pass to Carter, who beat Luongo with a wrister at 12:05.
Vancouver got Luongo out of the net in the final minute, but Quick was able to hold them off and finished the third period with nine saves for the win.
The Canucks scored at 12:27 of the first period when Kesler got the puck into the net on a one-timer from the right circle for his 16th of the season.
Los Angeles hosts Minnesota on Tuesday ... Vancouver plays in Anaheim on Sunday ... Los Angeles has won all three contests with Vancouver this season ... Vancouver finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play, while Los Angeles failed on all three of its chances.
