Final Score: Philadelphia 31, Tampa Bay 20
Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Foles, filling in for an injured Michael Vick, threw three touchdown passes and ran for another to lead the Philadelphia Eagles to a 31-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Foles completed 22-of-31 passes for 296 yards for the Eagles (3-3), who have won two in a row since a three-game skid. Ironically, Foles' only other victory as a starter came last December at Tampa Bay. The Arizona product, who improved to 2-5 as a starter, had a quarterback rating of 133.3.
"I'm really proud of my team for winning right now, it was a hard-fought game," Foles said.
Vick did not play Sunday due to a hamstring injury, which he suffered last week against the New York Giants. He has played in all 16 games only once in his career. It happened in 2006, his final year with the Falcons.
DeSean Jackson caught six passes for 64 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles, who became the third team in NFL history to rack up 400-plus yards of total offense over their first six games. The California product recorded two receiving touchdowns in a game for the first time in his career.
Riley Cooper hauled in four passes for 120 yards and a score for the victors. LeSean McCoy carried the ball 25 times for 116 yards and caught two passes for 55 yards.
Mike Glennon, making his second career start, connected on 26-of-43 passes for 273 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the Bucs, who are 0-5 for the first time since the 2009 season.
Vincent Jackson hauled in nine passes for 114 yards and two scores, while Doug Martin carried the ball 16 times for 67 yards.
Trailing 17-14, the Eagles made a big play on defense to start the second half. The Bucs were in Philadelphia territory when Bradley Fletcher picked off Glennon.
Just five plays into the ensuing Eagles possession, Foles threw a 47-yard TD pass to Cooper along the left sideline.
Following a punt from each team, Tampa Bay started at its own 1-yard line with 3:45 left in the third stanza. Vincent Jackson's 24-yard catch on the final play of the period moved the ball to midfield. Timothy Wright's 16-yard catch on third down kept the drive alive, but the march stalled at the Philadelphia 9-yard line and Rian Lindell made a 27-yard field goal.
The Eagles used another quick strike to increase their lead. Cooper caught a pass and turned it into a 44-yard gain on second down. On the next play, DeSean Jackson caught a 36-yard TD pass from Foles to give Philly a 28-20 margin with 9:32 to play.
"I don't think the tempo was really the issue," Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano said. "We just gave up four explosive plays, and we haven't done that. Balls haven't gone over our heads in the first four games, but they did today. We had a couple go over our head and it changed the complexion [of the game]."
After the Bucs went three-and-out, the Eagles ran 5:29 off the clock before Alex Henery made a 24-yard field goal to give the visitors an 11-point edge.
Tampa Bay was unable to do anything in the final 2:34.
The Eagles got the ball to start the game and scored a touchdown. McCoy caught a screen pass and ran for 44 yards on the first play. DeSean Jackson kept the drive alive with a catch of six yards on 3rd-and-2 before Foles followed with a 4-yard TD run up the middle.
"It was really important for us to get out to a fast start," Eagles coach Chip Kelly said.
After the Bucs went three-and-out, McCoy ran to the right and got flipped by Darrelle Revis. The ball came out and Revis picked it up and ran the other way for a score. Upon further review, the refs determined that Revis was down by contact at the Philadelphia 40-yard line. The home team had to settle for a 38-yard field goal from Lindell.
With less than a minute left in the first quarter, Eric Page returned a punt 40 yards to the Philadelphia 39-yard line. Just four plays later, Vincent Jackson caught a 24-yard TD pass over the middle.
Philadelphia took over four yards shy of midfield with 10 1/2 minutes left in the half. McCoy and Brent Celek caught passes of 11 and 10 yards, respectively, to move the ball to the Tampa Bay 31-yard line. DeSean Jackson capped the series with a 12-yard TD catch, making it 14-10 Philadelphia.
The Bucs responded with a 10-play, 79-yard scoring drive. Glennon kept the march alive with a 16-yard run on 3rd-and-14. Chris Owusu's 14-yard catch and Martin's 24-yard run set up Vincent Jackson's 1-yard TD grab on a fade route.
The Eagles own a 10-7 record all-time against Tampa Bay ... Eagles tight end James Casey missed the game, while safety Patrick Chung returned to the lineup after missing two games with a shoulder injury ... Buccaneers guard Carl Nicks and wide receiver Mike Williams missed the game. Nicks had a recurrence of a MRSA staph infection in his left foot this week. Johnthan Banks became the third Buccaneer this season to be diagnosed with MRSA, but he was cleared by doctors to play in Sunday's game ... Eagles running back Chris Polk left the game with a shoulder injury ... The Eagles have posted consecutive wins for the first time since opening last season 2-0.
