NFL Game Capsules - Preseason Week 5

THURSDAY AUGUST 28

Final Score: Atlanta 24, Jacksonville 14

Jacksonville, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Backup quarterback T.J. Yates completed 15 of his 20 passes for 243 yards and a pair of long touchdown passes to lead the Atlanta Falcons to a 24-14 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday. Seeing most of the snaps with Matt Ryan sitting out the preseason finale, Yates had touchdown throws of 66 yards to Antone Smith and 67 yards to Freddie Martino in the second quarter. Fourth-round draft pick Devonta Freeman had a 1-yard touchdown run for Atlanta in the first quarter and rushed for a game- high 42 yards on 12 carries. He had five catches for 45 yards. Ryan sat along with star receivers Julio Jones and Roddy White as the Falcons wrapped up a 2-2 preseason slate by snapping a two-game losing streak. Atlanta running back Steven Jackson missed all four preseason games with a hamstring injury but returned to practice this week and is expected to be ready for Atlanta's regular-season opener against NFC South rival New Orleans. Backup Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles, the No. 3 overall draft pick, passed for 86 yards in his three possessions, most of it on a 57-yard touchdown pass to second-round pick Marqise Lee in the second quarter.

Final Score: Detroit 23, Buffalo 0

Orchard Park, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Kellen Moore had two touchdown passes as the Detroit Lions thumped the Buffalo Bills, 23-0, in the final preseason tune-up for both clubs. The Lions rested many of their starters for the game and Moore went 17-for-28 for 172 yards and two touchdowns as the team went 3-1 in the preseason. Dan Orlovsky started under center and in just over one quarter he led the team to a field goal, going 7-for-11 for 39 yards. The Lions open up their season at home against the Giants on Sept. 8. Buffalo played many of its starters to begin the game, and saw the plan backfire on them as first-round draft pick Sammy Watkins left the game on the team's second drive. The rookie wide receiver, who had just three catches for 21 yards in the preseason, suffered an injury to his ribs after taking a hit and went to the bench. He missed the team's last game against the Buccaneers after suffering a rib injury in the second preseason game against Pittsburgh. E.J. Manuel started under center and was just 3-for-7 for 56 yards for the Bills, who went 1-4 on the preseason. Buffalo begins the regular season on the road at Chicago on Sept. 7.

Final Score: Cincinnati 35, Indianapolis 7

Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Jason Campbell went 13-of-16 passing for 123 yards and a touchdown as the Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Indianapolis Colts, 35-7, in the preseason finale for each team on Thursday. Cobi Hamilton hauled in three passes for 74 yards with a touchdown and Jeremy Hill finished with 90 yards on 20 carries for the Bengals, who open the season at Baltimore. Chandler Harnish played the entire game at quarterback for Indianapolis and passed for 102 yards on 13-of-24 attempts with a touchdown and an interception. The Colts, who finished the preseason winless, will travel to Denver for a primetime matchup with the Broncos next Sunday.

Final Score: Green Bay 34, Kansas City 14

With Aaron Rodgers and the rest of Green Bay's starters resting, Flynn started the game under center and had 102 yards passing, while Tolzien spelled him and completed 12-of-18 passes for 139 yards. Four different receivers had touchdown catches. Final Score: Miami 14, St. Louis 13

Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Miami Dolphins scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat the St. Louis Rams 14-13 on Thursday night. Miami was down 13-0 entering the fourth but got a 5-yard touchdown run from Daniel Thomas on fourth down and took the lead on Seth Lobato's 22-yard TD pass to Matt Hazel with 6:15 remaining. The Dolphins concluded the preseason with a 3-1 record and will host AFC East rival New England to begin the regular season. Austin Davis and Garrett Gilbert split the snaps at quarterback for St. Louis with Shaun Hill sitting out. Hill became the Rams' starter following the season-ending injury to Sam Bradford. The former No. 1 overall draft pick retore the ACL in his left knee last Saturday. Davis played the first two quarters and threw for 162 yards, including a touchdown pass to Austin Pettis. The second half belonged to Gilbert, who passed for only 50 yards.

Final Score: Philadelphia 37, NY Jets 7

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez sat against his old team, his new role as a high-profile backup settled. The same was true for former Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, except for what amounted to a ceremonial snap and handoff at the beginning of the game to give the Philly crowd a chance to cheer him if they wished. So forgive this preseason finale for producing a storyline no more interesting than a kicking competition between teammates. Rookie Cody Parkey showed a strong foot with three field goals, including two over 50 yards as Philadelphia beat New York 37-7 on Thursday night. Acquired by the Eagles from the Colts last week to compete with Alex Henery, Parkey took every field goal attempt for his new team and two of the four extra-point attempts. He was good from 54, 53 and 25 yards and added some booming kickoffs to give the competition some heat. Henery, who has made just two of his five attempts over 50 yards in three NFL seasons, was called on for one extra point and a few kickoffs. Matt Barkley, taking most of the snaps with starter Nick Foles and Sanchez both sitting out, passed for 253 yards with a 43-yard touchdown to Arrelious Benn. He threw one interception, in the end zone, and also rushed for a score.

Final Score: NY Giants 16, New England 13

East Rutherford, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Brown kicked a 37-yard field with 38 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to lift the New York Giants to a 16-13 win over the New England Patriots and spare the clubs from the indignity of preseason overtime football. Most starters sit out the preseason finale, but quarterback Eli Manning played two series for New York. He didn't accomplish much, completing 1-of-4 passes for no yards. Ryan Nassib threw for 107 yards and Peyton Hillis had a 1-yard touchdown run for the Giants, who went 5-0 in the preseason and will open the regular season at Detroit on Sept. 8. New England rookie Jimmy Garoppolo played the entire game and finished 22-of-42 for 284 yards and a touchdown. The Patriots concluded the preseason at 2-2 and will visit Miami on Sept. 7.

Silas Redd rushed for a game-high 79 yards and a touchdown, while Seastrunk caught two passes for 88 yards and rushed for 23 more yards for the Redskins, who finished 3-1 in the preseason. Washington will open the regular season in Houston on Sept. 7. Quarterback Mike Kafka went 7-of-14 for 86 yards and a score and rushed for 22 yards and Mike Glennon completed two of his three passes for just 10 yards for the Buccaneers. Jeff Demps led Tampa Bay rushers with 59 yards on 20 carries and rookie receiver Solomon Patton caught two passes for 34 yards and a score. The Buccaneers, who went 1-3 in preseason play, will host Carolina on Sept. 7 to start the season.

Final Score: Cleveland 33, Chicago 13

Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Browns starting quarterback Brian Hoyer played just one series against the Chicago Bears on Thursday night and took Cleveland on a 13-play, 85-yard drive that ended with a Ben Tate touchdown run. Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Johnson threw three touchdown passes to lead the San Francisco 49ers to a 40-13 victory over the Houston Texans in the preseason finale for both teams. The Niners and Texans split their four tune- up games heading into the regular season, which starts on Sunday, Sept. 7 for both teams. Blaine Gabbert got the start under center for the Niners and threw a go-ahead touchdown pass to Asante Cleveland in the second quarter, beginning a string of 24 straight points for San Francisco. Neither Case Keenum nor Tom Savage led Houston's reserves to any touchdowns. Savage had an interception returned for a touchdown by Chris Borland.
