National League Game Summary - Milwaukee at Pittsburgh
(Friday, June 6)
Final Score: Pittsburgh 15, Milwaukee 5
Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Russell Martin drove in four runs and the Pittsburgh Pirates routed the Brewers 15-5 in the opener of a three-game set on Friday.
Martin, who hit a three-run double during an eight-run sixth inning, finished 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored. Jordy Mercer supplied three RBI, including a home run, for the Pirates, who have won four of their last five.
"Anytime in the season where you are kind of able to just feed off each other like that, it's going to be a fun time, especially against a team we're trailing right now," Martin said. "If you can beat up on a good team it definitely builds a little confidence."
Brandon Cumpton (1-2) earned the win after allowing eight hits and three runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Khris Davis had two RBI for Milwaukee. Kyle Lohse (7-2), who entered the game with wins in his last seven decisions, was pounded for eight runs on nine hits across five-plus frames.
"It was just a bad night all around," Lohse said. "Everything just kind of went their way tonight."
Martin and Pedro Alvarez hit back-to-back singles to start this sixth inning and Jose Tabata's fly ball fell in shallow right, allowing Martin to score from third and chasing Lohse from the game.
After Mercer greeted Tyler Thornburg with a single to center that scored Alvarez, Travis Snider walked to load the bases and Thornburg issued bases- loaded walks to Josh Harrison and Ike Davis before Martin doubled off the wall in center to clear the bases. After Alvarez walked, Tabata singled him in to give the Pirates a comfortable 13-3 lead.
Starling Marte and Mercer each had RBI groundouts to make it 15-3 in the eighth.
Milwaukee added two runs in the ninth with Jean Segura's sacrifice fly and Ryan Braun's groundout to account for the final score.
The Pirates opened the scoring in the first. Harrison hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Andrew McCutchen's double to deep center field. Two batters later, McCutchen hustled home on Martin's line drive to center.
McCutchen stroked a solo shot to the left-field bleachers in the third for a 3-0 Pittsburgh advantage.
Jonathan Lucroy singled and Carlos Gomez doubled for Milwaukee with one out in the fourth. Aramis Ramirez's shallow fly ball bounced off the glove of second baseman Neil Walker in center, allowing Lucroy to score. Gomez rushed home from third on Davis' sacrifice fly to pull the Brewers within one.
Mercer crushed a slider that barely cleared the wall in left to lead off the fifth. Cumpton walked, moved up to second on Harrison's groundout and came home on Walker's single into shallow center, making it a 5-2 game.
The Brewers answered with a run in the sixth on Davis' RBI single, ending Cumpton's night.
The last time that the Pirates scored 15 runs was on July 21, 2010, which was also against the Brewers ... Lohse last gave up eight runs on Sept. 1, 2012, against Washington ... Lohse is now 11-3 against the Pirates in 22 starts ... Harrison has a nine-game hitting streak ... Walker has hit safely in each of his 11 games at PNC Park ... The Pirates are 23-6 this season when scoring four or more runs in a game.
