Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
When I drafted Jason Witten relatively early in one of my drafts this year (sixth round), I thought I would have a distinct advantage over my fellow competitors. I thought there were a limited number of good fantasy tight ends in the league. I was wrong.
Each week, my theory is being proven wrong. On Draft Day, most people believed that Witten (RapidDraft ADP 53.1), Tony Gonzalez (ADP 64.2), Antonio Gates (ADP 67.4) and Dallas Clark (ADP 77.8) were the class of the position.
So far, Clark (38-485-3) with 84 fantasy points and Gates (34-474-2) with 78 points have certainly lived up to expectations, but a number of younger tight ends have closed the gap and made spending a high draft choice on a premium starter a bad way to go.
Houston's Owen Daniels (39-497-5) has more than matched Clark and Gates in fantasy production with 94 points. He leads the position in "targets" with 56. Daniels has been on fire the last two weeks with seven catches for 78 yards and two scores in Week 6 and seven receptions for 123 yards and one TD on Sunday. The 26-year-old former Wisconsin Badger, was selected on Draft Day three-to-four rounds later than the premium players at the position (ADP 100).
And Daniels is not an isolated incident.
Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Heath Miller has always been a great blocker, but this year Ben Roethlisberger has been looking his way more often. Miller's statistics (40-353-4, 75 points) have him contending for the scoring lead and you could have picked him up on Draft Day for a 15th-round selection (ADP 175.2).
Eagles tight end Brent Celek (30-378-2, 62 points) is also in the battle and has yet to play his Week 7 game, so could actually be the position leader by the end on Monday night's tilt with Washington, as could Redskins tight end Chris Cooley. Celek's ADP was 182.
Vernon Davis, the talented San Francisco tight end who famously endured the wrath of Head Coach Mike Singletary last season, has become more than just a team leader, he's also playing a starring role in the offense. Yesterday, Davis caught seven balls for 93 yards and three touchdowns as he led the 49ers in a comeback at Houston. Davis has six touchdown catches in the team's last four games and 52 points for the season. Davis was likely the 20th tight end picked on Draft Day with an ADP of 196.8.
The tight end position appears to have so much talent that next year I will use my high draft picks elsewhere and still come up with a viable player.
