Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
Carlos who? The Utah Jazz won't miss Carlos Boozer's points or rebounds this season because they have Paul Millsap to take his place. Hopefully you knew that when you drafted your 2010 NBA fantasy team and selected the Louisiana Tech alum.
If Louisiana Tech and the Utah Jazz sound familiar to you, it's because that's the school that sent Karl Malone into the NBA. And to start the 2010 season, Millsap is producing numbers similar to those that Malone generated. No, I'm not saying that Millsap will be a Hall of Fame basketball player, but if you look at the numbers, it's not as farfetched as saying Greg Oden will make the Hall of Fame.
Millsap's problem coming out of college was that he was a second-round pick of the Jazz and sat behind Boozer for much of his first four seasons. Fortunately for Millsap, Boozer was injury-prone and the 6'8" 245 lb power forward has gotten a few opportunities to show what he can do as a starter. In 52 starts, he's averaged 16.2 ppg, 10.1 rpg and 2.5 apg. That's not bad for a player who really wasn't part of the offensive game plan.
But with Boozer in Chicago, Millsap should be a starter for the entire season. With a point guard the quality of Deron Williams, Millsap should improve on his career numbers.
He certainly has in the first few games of 2010. So far, he's averaging 21.3 ppg, 12.3 rpg and 3.0 apg. Those statistics, for a full season, would be above Boozer's career statistics - a two-time All-Star.
If you have him on your roster, enjoy the ride. But if you weren't able to draft him, then it's time to look into acquiring him through trade as his hot start is not a fluke. Millsap was a sixth-round fantasy selection (ADP 62) so you should still be able to get him for a reasonable price, but if you wait too long, his owner will realize what you already know - that the additional court time will make him a much improved player and a "steal."
Make his owner an offer, preferably with a "big" name player and you should be able to get yourself a fantasy stud for a bargain price.
