Description: Devils forward Jaromir Jagr has generated eight points in seven games since the Olympic break concluded.
Insight: With a goal and an assist Tuesday against the Flyers, Jagr is up to 57 points (21 goals) this season, his most in three years since he returned to the NHL after playing in Russia for three seasons.
Description: Adam Henrique (two goals, +2) was a bright spot on what was otherwise a disappointing night for the Devils Friday against the Red Wings.
Insight: With the Devils fighting for their playoff lives, this was a game New Jersey needed to have. Henrique has now tallied at least one goal in each of his last five games. That's his longest streak of the season.
Description: Devils winger Patrik Elias had a three-point game Thursday against the Blue Jackets.
Insight: Elias left the team Wednesday for the birth of his daughter but was able to make it back for Thursday's game. The 37-year-old has 36 points in 45 games after notching a goal and two helpers against Columbus.
Description: Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur blasted the quality of the ice at Yankee Stadium, where New Jersey lost to the New York Rangers Sunday afternoon. "... It was the worst ice I ever played hockey on," he said. SOURCE: espnny.com
Insight: The game was delayed for over an hour to due sun glare on the ice. Perhaps Brodeur was just venting his frustration after allowing six goals on 21 shots to the rival Rangers. The 41-year-old netminder is 13-11-4 with a 2.52 GAA and an .899 SV% this season.
Description: Devils goalie Cory Schneider is second in the NHL in goals against average at 1.88 and also has a .926 save percentage.
Insight: The Devils tried to make up for a season's worth of poor support for Schneider with seven goals Tuesday in a win over the Blues. Schneider has posted a 1.11 GAA and a .960 SV% while going 4-1-2 over his last seven starts.
Description: Devils winger Damien Brunner (sprained MCL) is expected to return to the lineup Tuesday, according to Rich Chere of nj.com.
Insight: Brunner suffered a sprained MCL on Dec. 20. He was hot at the time of the injury, scoring four goals with one assist in his previous four games, but he only has 13 points in 32 games for the season.
Description: New Jersey winger Patrik Elias is expected to be activated from injured reserve for Thursday's game against Colorado.
Insight: Elias has missed the past seven games, but has still managed to accumulate 25 points (seven goals) in 33 games. He's not the 96-point guy he was in 2000, but he's still a viable fantasy option.
Description: Even though his contract with New Jersey is up at the end of the year, Martin Brodeur believes he'll play at least one more season. SOURCE: The Bergen Record
Insight: Brodeur admitted that he'd consider leaving the Devils if another team offered him a contract. The 41-year-old has played well this season (12-9-4, 2.39 GAA, .902 SV%) but it seems like the team would prefer to use the equally-talented Cory Schneider (7-9-5, 1.97 GAA, .921 SV%) going forward.
Description: Devils goalie Cory Schneider has posted a 0.98 GAA and a .963 SV% his last four starts.
Insight: Schneider went 3-1-0 in that span with all four games decided by one goal, including Saturday's overtime win over the Panthers. Martin Brodeur has been roughed up lately, so we may finally see Schneider get a greater share of the starts.
Description: Devils netminder Cory Schneider captured his third shutout of the season Thursday in 1-0 win over Dallas.
Insight: Though his record doesn't reflect it (just 6-9-5), Schneider has easily been New Jersey's best goalie in 2013-14. It will be interesting to see what Schneider can do if Martin Brodeur decides to retire after the season.
Description: New Jersey winger Michael Ryder has potted nine goals in 17 games since the start of December.
Insight: He's found the net in three of the last four games. However, due to a slow start -- five goals and nine points in the first two months of the season -- he still only has 14 goals and 22 points in 44 games.
Description: New Jersey left wing Patrik Elias will definitely miss Tuesday's game but he could be back Thursday, according to TOm Gulitti of the Bergen Record.
Insight: Elias is out with what the team is calling 'total body soreness" from being hit into the boards by Tanner Glass last week. He's been placed on injured reserve but can come off for Thursday's game if he's healthy.
Description: New Jersey left wing Patrik Elias missed Thursday's practice with what was called "total body soreness," according to the Bergen Record.
Insight: Elias lasted only one shift on Tuesday, exiting after 42 seconds of play. The 37-year-old is slow to recover these days and hasn't scored a goal since Dec. 13. Still, he has 25 points in 33 games.
Description: Devils winger Ryane Clowe (concussion) will play Friday against Columbus, according to Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record.
Insight: Clowe has been limited to six games this season, his first with New Jersey, due to a concussion. He had at least 45 points every year from 2008-09 to 2011-12 and is always a strong contributor of penalty minutes.
Description: Devils defenseman Andy Greene had a goal and two assists Saturday against the Capitals.
Insight: Greene has recorded a goal in two straight games and five points with 12 SOG over his last three. The 31-year-old's goal on Saturday gave him six this season, tying a career high. Greene has 20 points in 37 games.
Description: Devils winger Damien Brunner left Friday's game with a lower-body injury and will not return, according to Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger.
Insight: Brunner appeared to suffer a right knee injury when he was checked into the boards. He came into the game with four goals and five points in his past four games after posting one point from Oct. 29 to Dec. 7.
Description: New Jersey winger Michael Ryder scored a goal for the second straight game Wednesday against Montreal.
Insight: Ryder also had one assist Wednesday, giving him three points during the Devils' back-to-back stretch against the Canadiens, the team he played with for 27 games last season. He had just nine points combined in October and November after recording 16 goals and 35 points in 46 games last season.
Description: The Devils beat the Sabres 1-0 Saturday night behind Cory Schneider's 15 saves.
Insight: Schneider had to face just 37 SOG while picking up a win in each of the last two days. New Jersey is getting fantastic goalie play from both Schneider and Martin Brodeur right now, so fantasy owners cannot expect the division of labor to change in Schneider's favor.
Description: Devils goalie Cory Schneider will start Saturday against Buffalo.
Insight: Schneider faced just 18 shots and stopped 16 in a 5-2 win at Carolina Friday night, and he'll get back-to-back starts for the first time since Oct. 22 and 24. Schneider is 3-5-1 with a 1.89 GAA and a .923 SV% in 11 starts this season.
Description: Devils goalie Martin Brodeur will defend the net Saturday at San Jose.
Insight: Brodeur started off slow and looked to be clearly behind Cory Schneider on the depth chart but he's been absolutely on fire. He has won seven of his eight appearances since Oct. 26 and is back in a 50-50 split with Schneider.
Description: Devils goalie Cory Schneider will start Thursday against the Kings.
Insight: Schneider is just 1-5-3 this season despite carrying a 1.98 GAA and a .918 SV% into Thurday's game. He's currently in a 50-50 split with Martin Brodeur due to Brodeur's impressive play as of late.
Description: Devils goalie Martin Brodeur turned aside 27 of the 28 shots Pittsburgh sent at him in a 4-1 win Saturday night.
Insight: Brodeur started off slow and looked to be clearly behind Cory Schneider on the depth chart but he's been absolutely on fire since his last start of October. Over his last six games, Brodeur is 5-1 with a 0.84 GAA, a .964 SV% and two shutouts. The Devils goaltending situation should continue to be a 50-50 split.
Description: Devils goalie Cory Schneider will start for the Devils Friday at Toronto.
Insight: Schneider is 1-4-2 despite allowing just 2.27 goals per 60 minutes. Martin Brodeur has been playing better as of late and had a shutout Thursday, so we could see an even split in starts for the time being.
Description: Devils center Travis Zajac (ankle) will return to action Thursday after missing the last two games.
Insight: The Devils were shut out in both games without Zajac, but he likely wouldn't have made a difference. The 28-year-old has one goal, four points and 21 SOG in 12 games this season and hasn't been a fantasy option since 2009-10.
Description: Devils winger Jaromir Jagr's 119th career game-winning goal Tuesday night actually moved him into sole possession of second place in NHL history. It was incorrectly reported that he set the record, but he's still two away from tying Gordie Howe. SOURCE: Bergen Record
Insight: When Jagr scored his 118th game-winning goal last season, it was widely reported that Jagr had tied Phil Esposito for the most game-winning goals in NHL history and the Bruins even started putting that information in Jagr's profile in their media game notes. The Devils picked that info up when they signed him this offseason and put it in their media guide. The Elias Sports Bureau cleared up the error Tuesday.
Description: Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur picked up his second straight win Tuesday against the Lightning.
Insight: Brodeur had to make just 16 saves in a 2-1 victory. He entered the game with a 1-2-2 record, a 3.32 GAA and an .871 SV% in his first five games. The 41-year-old will continue to start with Cory Schneider currently on injured reserve.
Description: Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur will start Saturday at Boston.
Insight: Brodeur has had a miserable start to the season, going 0-2-2 with a 3.40 GAA and an .865 SV%. He admitted this week that Cory Schneider is now the No. 1 netminder in New Jersey, but we can't see the Devils taking their future Hall of Famer out of the goalie rotation entirely. A 70-30 split is likely if Schneider keeps playing well.
Description: Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur said that Cory Schneider is "in the net now to stay." "I don’t see that’s going to be changed any time soon," Brodeur said. "I’ll be ready if it is, but I think we’ve got to try to win some games somehow. This is what (coach Pete DeBoer) feels is the best opportunity for him to be successful is having (Schneider) in the net and that’s fine. If we win, everybody’s happy. Even though I don’t play, it’s more enjoyable to be around." SOURCE: Bergen Record
Insight: Schneider has a 2.21 GAA and a .917 SV% in five games, while Brodeur has played four games and owns a 3.40 GAA and an .865 SV%. The Devils aren't going to completely stop playing the 41-year-old future Hall of Famer, but we could see a 70-30 split in the starts going forward.
Description: Devils forward Damien Brunner (upper body) is expected to return to action Tuesday against the Blue Jackets, according to Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record.
Insight: Coach Pete DeBoer said Brunner will play, "as long as he doesn't seize up here between now and game time." The winger suffered an upper-body injury on Oct. 13 at Winnipeg and hasn't played since Oct. 17.
Description: New Jersey center Damien Brunner missed Saturday's win over the Rangers.
Insight: He's dealing with an upper-body injury. Coach Peter DeBoer said he doesn't think the injury is serious but didn't have an update for reporters after the game, according to Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record.
Description: Cory Schneider blocked 22 shots Saturday against the Rangers to pick up his first shutout as a member of the New Jersey Devils.
Insight: Schneider gave up three goals in each of his first two starts but he has allowed two on 56 shots in his last two games. The Devils won't give up on Martin Brodeur, who is 0-2-2 with a 3.40 GAA and an .865 SV%, but Schneider might be able to turn this into a 60-40 split if he keeps playing well.
Description: New Jersey center Damien Brunner is expected to be a game-time decision ahead of Saturday's 7 p.m. start against the Rangers. SOURCE: The Bergen Record
Insight: The Devils wouldn't reveal his injury, just saying that Brunner is "dealing with some nagging stuff." It sounds like the usual wear and tear of a grinding season and nothing serious. Our money's on Brunner suiting up tonight against the Blue Shirts.
Description: The X-rays on Devils winger Ryane Clowe's foot came back negative and he skated Thursday, according to the Bergen Record.
Insight: Clowe was hit in the right foot by a puck in the second period. "Everything was good, Clowe said. "It was just swollen the last couple of days. It felt good on the ice. The hardest part was getting it in the skate, but once I got out there it was fine" Clowe sounds likely to play Friday at Calgary.
Description: Devils netminder Cory Schneider will start Tuesday's starter against the Canucks, his former team.
Insight: Roberto Luongo's contract made it difficult to move him so the Canucks decided to trade Schneider instead. The 27-year-old Schneider gave up three goals in a season-opening loss to Pittsburgh and will continue to split starts with Martin Brodeur.
Description: Winger Michael Ryder scored his first Devils goal Friday against the Islanders.
Insight: Ryder is one of the players New Jersey brought in to replace the offense lost when David Clarkson signed with Toronto and Ilya Kovalchuk left for the KHL. He had 62 points in 82 games in 2011-12 and produced at an identical pace last season (35 points in 46 games).
Description: Devils forward Damien Brunner had two goals on four shots Friday against the Islanders.
Insight: He did that after taking eight SOG in the season opener Thursday. With David Clarkson and Ilya Kovalchuk gone, the Devils needs players like Brunner to fill the void. Fantasy owners shouldn't overlook the second-year player.
Description: Devils forward Damien Brunner had eight SOG in the season opener Thursday.
Insight: David Clarkson, who signed with Toronto in the offseason, led the Devils in 2012-13 with 180 SOG, 47 more than any other player on the team. The Devils need someone to take his place and Brunner will be one of the options.
Description: Netminder Cory Schneider will make his Devils debut Thursday versus Pittsburgh.
Insight: Martin Brodeur will get the start Friday in the Devils' home opener. Schneider should eventually become the starter in New Jersey, though in 2013-14 he'll probably have to settle for a timeshare with Brodeur.
Description: Devils forward Patrik Elias (undisclosed) practiced Tuesday and should be able to play in the season opener Thursday.
Insight: Elias said Monday that he was over his undisclosed injury but the Devils went ahead and placed him on the injured reserve list. We'd be surprised if he doesn't play Thursday after practicing Tuesday.
Description: Veteran right wing Jaromir Jagr will play alongside Adam Henrique and Travis Zajac to start the season.
Insight: Jagr didn't do much during the preseason. The 2013-14 campaign will be Jagr's 20th season in the NHL and at age 41 fantasy owners can expect him to be in and out of the lineup. He can still fill up the net (16 goals, 19 assists in 45 games last season). He'll be worth having in all fantasy formats.
Description: The Devils have signed Damien Brunner to a two-year, $5 million contract, according to Rich Chere of NJ.com.
Insight: The Devils brought in Brunner on a tryout contract and he impressed during training camp. As a rookie with the Detroit Red Wings last season, the former Swiss league star scored 12 goals and had 26 points in 44 games. He could play a top-six role with New Jersey and is worth a late-round draft pick.
Description: Veteran right wing Jaromir Jagr was forced from Thursday's practice due to soreness.
Insight: The 2013-14 campaign will be Jagr's 20th season in the NHL and at age 41, these things are going to happen. He can still fill up the net (16 goals, 19 assists in 45 games last season). He'll be worth having in all fantasy formats.
Description: Veteran right wing Jaromir Jagr has agreed to a one-year deal with the Devils. SOURCE: Pierre LeBrun, ESPN
Insight: The 2013-14 campaign will be Jagr's 20th season in the NHL. Even at age 41, he can still find the net (16 goals, 19 assists last season). He'll be worth having in all fantasy formats next season.
Description: Former New Jersey right wing Ilya Kovalchuk will play for St. Petersburg SKA of the KHL next season. SOURCE: Dmitry Chesnokov, Yahoo Sports
Insight: Kovalchuk stunned the hockey world by announcing his retirement from the NHL on Thursday. Turns out, Kovalchuk never wanted to quit hockey. He just wanted to play closer to home, which he now has the opportunity to do by playing in Russia. Kovalchuk's decision to leave the United States for Europe has already generated plenty of controversy. Jeremy Roenick, who played in the NHL from 1988 to 2009, had this to say on his Twitter account: "Kovalchuk is as selfish as they come!!! I'm appalled ... Hey Ilya, hope u live comfortably in Russia w the money u made from the 23 million u stole from the devils."
Description: Devils forward Ilya Kovalchuk has walked away from $77 million in future salary by announcing his retirement from the NHL.
Insight: "This decision was something I have thought about for a long time going back to the lockout and spending the year in Russia. Though I decided to return this past season, Lou (general manager Lou Lamoriello) was aware of my desire to go back home and have my family there with me. The most difficult thing for me is to leave the New Jersey Devils, a great organization that I have a lot of respect for, and our fans that have been great to me." Kovalchuk will likely sign with a KHL team.
Description: Renaud Lavoie from RDS is reporting that right wing Ryan Clowe has agreed to a five-year, $24.25 million contract with New Jersey.
Insight: He won't have to travel far as the Devils play just 20 miles south of Manhattan where Clowe finished up his 2013 campaign with the New York Rangers. Clowe only produced three goals in 2013 but he made up for it by handing out 16 assists.
Description: In perhaps the biggest trade of this year's draft (at least so far) the Canucks sent goalie Cory Schneider to the Devils for the ninth overall pick.
Insight: We thought for sure if Vancouver was going to trade one of its goalies it would have been Roberto Luongo. Instead, Schneider is the one packing his bags. Schneider should become the starter in New Jersey at some point though in 2013-14 he'll probably have to settle for a timeshare with veteran Martin Brodeur.
Description: Devils center Adam Henrique was a healthy scratch Tuesday but he'll return to action Thursday against Pittsburgh, according to the Bergen Record.
Insight: Henrique missed the first two weeks of the season while recovering from an injury and he has been a major disappointment since then. After posting four goals and six points in his first seven games, Henrique has seven goals and 10 points in his last 33 games.
Description: Devils winger David Clarkson had a goal and an assist Saturday against Florida.
Insight: This season started out so well for Clarkson, as he had 10 goals and 17 points over his first 20 games, but even with Saturday's output he has just four goals and six points over his last 24 games. Overall, he's on a similar pace to last season, when he had 30 goals and 46 points in 80 games. Per 82 games this season, he's on a 26-goal and 43-point pace.
Description: Devils winger Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) will not travel with the team to Philadelphia, according to the Bergen Record.
Insight: Kovalchuk (10 G, 17 A in 32 games) initially said he would accompany the team to Philly Wednesday afternoon and decide after Thursday's morning skate if he would play Thursday night against the Flyers, but the Devils decided to leave him back. He hasn't played since March 23 and the Devils haven't won a game since.
Description: Devils winger Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) returned to practice Tuesday, but will not be ready to play in Friday's game with Ottawa.
Insight: Kovalchuk (10 G, 17 A in 32 games) is a must start whenever he returns, but the team likely won't allow that until his shoulder is completely healed. Monday is a more likely date for his return.
Description: The league has handed New Jersey defenseman Anton Volchenkov a four-game suspension for elbowing Bruins left wing Brad Marchand in the head on Wednesday.
Insight: Fantasy owners won't miss Volchenkov (one goal and three assists this season) but they will miss Marchand if the head injury he suffered turns out to be serious. Marchand leads the team in points (33) and goals (16) this season. For now, the B's are listing him as day-to-day.
Description: Devils backup goaltender Johan Hedberg is expected to miss Wednesday's game against Boston with an undisclosed injury.
Insight: Hedberg hasn't played since mid-March because he's struggled to a 2.73 GAA and .886 save percentage. At this point Martin Brodeur should start from here on out. Keith Kinkaid will back up Bordeur.
Description: Devils winger Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) returned to practice Tuesday but said he's still "a few more days" away from being ready to return from his injury, according to the Bergen Record.
Insight: Kovalchuk (10 G, 17 A in 32 games) hasn't played since March 23. "Conditioning-wise I feel good," Kovalchuk said. "That never was as a problem. I just want to make sure I’m 100 percent when I’m in contact and I can shoot the one-timers and I can take the hard wrist shots. It’s definitely going to take a few more days." Devils coach Pete DeBoer said that the team is taking it "day by day," but added that he isn't going to wait until his shoulder is completely healed either.
Description: Devils coach Pete DeBoer said that Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) is making progress and should be back for the stretch drive, but there is still no timetable for his return and he isn't expected to play this weekend, according to a Bergen Record report.
Insight: Kovalchuk (10 G, 17 A in 32 games) hasn't played since March 23.
Description: The initial prognosis is that Devils forward Ilya Kovalchuk will miss 2-4 weeks with a right shoulder injury, according to the Bergen Record.
Insight: However, that prognosis was made without Kovalchuk having an MRI. He'll undergo an MRI Sunday to get a more definitive diagnosis. GM Lou Lamoriello was confident Kovalchuk would not require surgery.
Description: Devils center Travis Zajac handed out two assists for the second straight game Saturday against the Panthers.
Insight: Zajac found Patrik Elias and David Clarkson for goals in the second period. He has been a disappointment this year with five goals and eight assists in 32 games despite getting extended ice time as a center for all of the team's top scorers.
Description: Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur played his first game since Feb. 21 Thursday against the Hurricanes and saved 17 of 18 shots while also picking up his third career goal in a 4-1 win. Brodeur missed a month due to a pinched nerve in his upper back.
Insight: Brodeur was the last Devils player to touch the puck before Jordan Staal made an errant pass that bounced off the boards and into his own net. Carolina was working on a delayed penalty so netminder Dan Ellis was on his way off the ice, leaving the net vacant. Brodeur improved to 9-2-3 with the win.
